Google Street View offers the clearer, more explicit home-privacy control. A homeowner or tenant can request a whole-house blur through Street View’s reporting workflow, and Google documents automatic blurring of identifiable faces and license plates. Apple Maps Look Around also blurs faces and plates and accepts requests to blur your own house, but Apple routes those requests through its reporting or Image Collection privacy channels and explains less about the exact whole-house process. Google additionally says imagery newly blurred after a request is excluded from generative-AI prompting; Apple says blurred imagery may still help improve Apple Maps and other Apple products and services.

What “home privacy” means in these map services

Neither service removes a property from the map. Instead, the privacy control changes how a panorama is displayed: identifiable details are algorithmically obscured, and a person may ask for additional blurring of a property or other subject. The distinction matters because a house can remain visible as a building, street address and map feature even after its imagery is blurred.

This comparison concerns the controls documented for Apple Maps Look Around and Google Street View. It is a documentation-based assessment of privacy settings and request procedures, not a test of image quality, geographic coverage or how quickly either company responds.

Apple Maps and Google Street View at a glance

Privacy question Google Street View Apple Maps Look Around
Automatic protection Identifiable faces and license plates are automatically blurred. Faces and license plates are blurred before Look Around imagery is published.
Whole-house request Explicitly supported; the reporting tool can request blurring of an entire house. Apple accepts a request to blur your own house, but public instructions describe a contact/report process rather than a detailed self-service house-blur form.
Who can request a house blur Google states that only the home owner or tenant is eligible. Apple’s published wording refers to requests for “your own house”; it does not state the same owner-or-tenant rule in the cited material.
How to submit Open the panorama, use its reporting control, choose the house option, identify the property and submit. Open the address in Maps, enter Look Around when available, then use the imagery report/privacy route or the Maps Image Collection contact channel.
Use of newly blurred imagery Google says newly blurred Street View imagery is excluded from generative-AI prompting from that point onward. Apple says blurred imagery may still be used to improve Apple Maps and other Apple products and services.
Coverage Depends on whether Street View imagery exists at the specific address. Depends on whether Look Around imagery exists at the specific address.

There is no directly comparable worldwide coverage percentage in the cited official material. Check the individual address rather than assuming that one service has imagery everywhere the other does.

Google Street View: the more clearly documented house-blur control

Automatic blurring happens before you make a request

Google says its technology automatically blurs an identifiable face or license plate in Street View imagery. This protection is applied to recognizable people and vehicle plates without the subject having to file a request. Automatic redaction does not necessarily hide the rest of a vehicle, building or yard, so a homeowner who wants the property itself obscured needs to submit an additional request.

Who is eligible to request a house blur

Google’s current help guidance states that only the home owner or tenant is eligible to request a house blur. If you are a neighbor, visitor or passerby, the documented house-blur route is not presented as available to you. You can still report a specific privacy or safety problem through the normal reporting controls, but do not represent yourself as the resident if you are not one.

How to request a blur in Street View

  1. Open Google Maps and search for the property address.
  2. Enter Street View and move to the panorama that shows the home. Choose the view that most accurately represents the property; a request tied to the wrong panorama can make the issue harder to identify.
  3. Open the image’s reporting control, commonly labeled Report a problem or shown as a reporting link in the panorama interface.
  4. Choose the option for the house (rather than a face or license plate) and position the report so the entire property you want considered is clearly identified.
  5. Enter the requested contact and explanatory information, confirming that you are the owner or tenant.
  6. Submit the report and retain any confirmation or case information shown by Google.

Labels and button placement can vary between the web interface, mobile app and local versions of Maps. The essential sequence is the same: locate the exact panorama, open its reporting control, select the house category, identify the property and submit as an eligible resident.

What happens to the imagery after a successful request

Google documents that a requested blur can cover the entire house. The same reporting policy also allows additional blurring of an entire car or person, which is different from the automatic face-and-plate redaction. Google further says that Street View imagery newly blurred after a request is excluded from generative-AI prompting from that point onward. That statement concerns prompting use; it does not say that every copy of every historical image is erased from all systems, nor does it promise that future photography will never show the property again.

Timing and limitations

Google’s cited help and policy pages do not publish a universal completion-time guarantee. A request can therefore remain under review for an unspecified period, and the documentation does not support promising completion within a particular number of days. A blur applies to the imagery Google processes and publishes; a later Street View capture may require a new report if the property is recognizable again.

Apple Maps Look Around: available protection with a less prescriptive workflow

Automatic protection in Look Around

Apple says it uses image-blurring algorithms for faces and license plates in imagery published in Look Around. Its imagery-collection privacy information also says Apple applies blurring before publication and pays special attention to sensitive areas such as places of worship and hospitals. These are baseline protections, not a guarantee that every part of a home, vehicle or private space will be hidden automatically.

Apple accepts requests to blur your own house

Apple’s Image Collection guidance explicitly invites people to request that “your own house” be blurred, along with a face or license plate. The public wording confirms that a whole-house request is possible, but it does not spell out a dedicated sequence of eligibility checks and house-specific buttons comparable to Google’s documented owner-or-tenant rule.

How to submit an Apple Maps request

  1. Open Apple Maps and search for the exact address.
  2. Enter Look Around if imagery is available at that location. Look Around is not offered at every address, so the absence of the feature means there is no displayed panorama to report there.
  3. Use the reporting or privacy option associated with the Look Around imagery. Depending on the device and interface, this may appear as a way to report an issue with the image rather than as a button labeled specifically for “house blur.”
  4. Describe the property precisely: include the address or map position, identify the house in the panorama and state that you are asking Apple to blur your own house.
  5. If the in-app route does not expose the appropriate option, use Apple’s Maps Image Collection contact channel, which Apple lists for privacy questions and requests to blur a face, license plate or house.
  6. Submit the request and keep the confirmation or correspondence so you can refer to the same property if Apple asks for clarification.

Apple’s documentation does not publish a universal turnaround service-level agreement. Do not assume that a report will be completed within a fixed number of days, and avoid sending repeated reports that identify different locations or panoramas for the same property unless the image has changed.

Information associated with a privacy report

Apple’s Maps issue-reporting privacy notice says a report involving a home or a request to blur Look Around imagery can be associated with the reporter’s Apple Account. Apple may also collect contextual map information, including the map image, zoom level and last search term used, so its team can understand the report. Include only the information needed to identify the correct property; the report itself is not an anonymous submission under that notice.

What Apple says about later use of blurred imagery

Apple says blurred imagery may still be used to improve Apple Maps and other Apple products and services. Blurring therefore changes what viewers can identify in the published panorama, but it does not amount to a promise that Apple will delete all internal copies or stop every future product-improvement use. The cited Apple material does not make the same generative-AI-prompting exclusion that Google describes for newly blurred Street View imagery.

Which service gives you the stronger privacy control?

Google is stronger for a clearly defined self-service house request

Google is the better-documented choice when your priority is a specific, whole-house control with an explicit eligibility rule. Its help page identifies owners and tenants as the eligible requesters, while its Street View policy names the report category and says the entire house can be blurred. The additional statement about excluding newly blurred imagery from generative-AI prompting gives Google’s public documentation a further downstream-use boundary.

Apple is reasonable if your address is in Look Around and you prefer Apple’s support route

Apple provides the underlying protection: automatic face and plate blurring, a published way to ask for your own house to be blurred and a direct Maps Image Collection privacy contact. That is a meaningful control, particularly for someone who already uses Apple Maps and can provide the exact imagery context. The trade-off is less procedural detail in the public instructions and a stated possibility that blurred imagery continues to support improvements to Apple products and services.

Neither service guarantees that a home will never appear again

A blur is tied to imagery and a specific property representation, not a permanent ban on future photography. If a later capture shows the house clearly, report that new panorama. Also remember that map tiles, aerial imagery, photographs uploaded by users and third-party real-estate images are separate from the Street View or Look Around panorama; a house blur in one layer does not automatically alter those other sources.

Choosing the right service for your situation

  • You want the clearest documented process: choose Google Street View’s owner-or-tenant reporting workflow.
  • You use Apple Maps and the issue is in Look Around: use Apple’s report/privacy route or its Image Collection contact channel and identify your own house precisely.
  • You are concerned about generative-AI prompting: Google expressly documents exclusion of newly blurred Street View imagery from prompting; Apple’s cited material instead allows continued improvement use of blurred imagery.
  • You are reporting someone else’s home: neither set of instructions supports casually claiming the property as your own. Use the applicable general privacy or safety reporting route and describe the issue accurately.
  • The address has no panorama: there is no displayed Street View or Look Around image to blur at that moment. Check again after future imagery updates, and handle any separate aerial or user-uploaded content through its own reporting mechanism.

Troubleshooting a house-blur request

The report form does not show a house option

Confirm that you are reporting from the panorama itself rather than from a general map listing, and verify that the image is the exact property. In Google, the house category is part of the Street View reporting flow. In Apple Maps, the control may be presented as a general imagery or privacy report, in which case describe the request explicitly and use the Image Collection contact route if necessary.

The wrong building or only part of the property was blurred

Submit a precise follow-up that identifies the correct panorama, viewing direction and property boundaries. Explain whether the problem is a neighboring building, a detached garage, a vehicle or the main house. Avoid broad, ambiguous descriptions such as “blur everything on this street,” which do not identify the subject for review.

The request has not produced a visible change

Neither cited service publishes a universal processing-time SLA, so an immediate change is not guaranteed. Check the same panorama later, make sure you are viewing the current imagery rather than a cached or older capture, and retain the original confirmation. If a newer capture is clear, file a new report for that image rather than assuming the earlier decision covered it.

You are worried about information submitted with the report

Google’s process requires the requester to establish eligibility as the owner or tenant. Apple’s privacy notice says a Look Around report can be associated with an Apple Account and can include the map image, zoom level and last search term used. Provide the minimum accurate context needed to locate the house and do not include unrelated personal documents or details unless the service specifically requests them through its official channel.

Bottom line

For most homeowners, Google Street View offers the better-documented home-privacy control: owners and tenants have an explicit whole-house blur route, automatic face and plate redaction is documented, and Google states that newly blurred imagery is excluded from generative-AI prompting. Apple Maps Look Around is a credible alternative with automatic face and plate blurring and a route to request a blur of your own house, but its public process is more contact-driven and it allows blurred imagery to continue supporting improvements to Apple products and services.
