In Apple Maps, a red traffic line means stop-and-go traffic; yellow indicates slowdowns. The color describes traffic conditions, not the cause of the delay. A red line alone does not tell you that there has been a crash or another specific incident.
What a red line means
Apple’s iPhone user guide says, “Yellow indicates slowdowns, and red indicates stop-and-go traffic.” Apple Support’s guide to traffic conditions and incident reports describes the colors qualitatively; it does not give a numeric speed threshold for red.
Apple’s guidance does not assign a separate meaning to dark red. A deeper-looking shade should not be treated as a distinct severity level or speed range based on the documentation.

Traffic lines are different from incident markers
A red traffic segment indicates stop-and-go conditions, but it does not identify why traffic is slow. Apple Maps displays incident markers separately for reports such as road closures, accidents, roadwork, and hazards. Tap a marker to see its report.

- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
Incident reporting and markers vary by location. Apple says it evaluates incident reports and displays markers when it has a high level of confidence in them, so the absence of a marker does not prove that no incident is present. Apple’s guide also notes that traffic features may not be available in every country or region.
How to check traffic and investigate a delay
- Open Maps and view the area in Driving or Satellite map mode, as described in Apple’s traffic guide.
- Read a red segment as stop-and-go traffic and a yellow segment as a slowdown; do not infer a precise speed or cause from the color.
- If an incident marker appears, tap it to read the report rather than treating the colored traffic line as the incident itself.
- When comparing route options, consider the displayed traffic condition alongside estimated travel time and route directions. Apple confirms that route colors indicate traffic conditions, but does not document a complete color-by-color scale for every route presentation in its driving directions guide.
Why you might not see a marker or traffic colors
Traffic and incident features depend on location, and Apple says they are not available everywhere. Apple also describes reporting incidents in Maps, with some report types dependent on location: report traffic incidents in Maps.

If the line you see is not traffic coloring—for example, it appears to be a route highlight or another map symbol—the red color alone is not enough to identify it. The Apple guidance cited here does not define every map appearance across devices. A screenshot and the device and software context can help distinguish the feature.
