Apple classified the MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, 2017) as obsolete on October 14, 2026. It was the final 12-inch MacBook model, so every generation of Apple’s compact 12-inch notebook is now on the obsolete list. The same update added the sixth-generation iPad (Wi‑Fi and Wi‑Fi + Cellular) and several BeatsX color variants.
For MacBook owners, “obsolete” primarily changes access to hardware repairs and genuine parts. It does not automatically state when macOS or security updates end. Software compatibility must be checked separately for the exact model and operating system.
What Apple’s obsolete designation means
Apple’s service policy classifies a product as vintage when distribution ended more than five and less than seven years earlier, and as obsolete when distribution ended more than seven years earlier. Apple says owners can obtain service and parts from Apple service providers for a minimum of five years from the date Apple last distributed a product for sale.
Once a product is obsolete, Apple discontinues hardware service and service providers cannot order parts through Apple. In practice, an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider will generally decline normal repairs such as logic-board, display, keyboard, trackpad or port replacement because genuine parts are no longer orderable.

Apple says it has a network of more than 5,000 Apple-certified repair locations, but that network does not override the obsolete-parts policy. A location may still diagnose a device or discuss alternatives, yet it cannot promise an Apple repair when the required part is unavailable.
Is every 12-inch MacBook obsolete now?
Yes. The 2017 Retina MacBook was the last model in the 12-inch MacBook family. Apple had already classified the 2015 and 2016 models as obsolete; adding the 2017 model completes the transition for the entire line.

Can Apple still replace a 2017 MacBook battery?
Possibly, but there is no guarantee. Apple’s policy allows Mac laptops to remain eligible for battery-only repair for up to 10 years after distribution ended, provided replacement parts are still available. This exception is narrower than general hardware service: it does not restore eligibility for a failed display, keyboard, logic board, storage component or other part.
The policy does not publish the exact end-of-distribution date for every configuration in the obsolete-list notice, so the 10-year window cannot be converted into a single guaranteed deadline from the information available here. Contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider with the MacBook’s serial number and ask specifically about battery-only service and current parts inventory.

Does obsolete mean the MacBook stops receiving macOS updates?
No. Obsolete is a hardware-service classification, not a stated software-support cutoff. A Mac can continue running its installed version of macOS after Apple stops offering hardware repairs, and it may receive updates if its model remains compatible with a newer release.
To check software support, identify the exact model in Apple menu > About This Mac, record the model year and macOS version, then compare that information with Apple’s current compatibility requirements for the operating-system release you want. Compatibility can change independently of the obsolete-product list, so do not use the service status as a substitute for an OS-compatibility check.

What owners should do now
1. Check the Mac’s condition
- Review battery health and runtime, and note whether the battery is swollen, unusually hot or shutting down unexpectedly.
- Test the keyboard, trackpad, display, USB-C port, speakers, camera and wireless connections.
- Back up important files before any repair attempt or operating-system upgrade.
2. Ask about the battery exception
Give Apple support or a certified provider the serial number and request a battery-only assessment. Ask whether the required battery is physically in stock; eligibility under the policy depends on parts availability.

3. Get a second repair quote if Apple declines
An independent repair shop may have compatible parts, donor machines or board-level repair expertise that Apple’s service channel cannot use. Ask whether the part is new, used or third-party, what warranty applies, and whether the shop will return replaced components. Independent repair can reduce cost, but quality and parts provenance vary.

4. Compare repair with replacement
For a MacBook with a healthy battery and software that still meets your needs, continued use costs nothing beyond normal maintenance. Replacement becomes more compelling when the battery, keyboard or logic board is failing, essential applications require a newer macOS version, or reliable parts are difficult to find. Compare the repair quote with the price and condition of a used or refurbished newer Mac, including warranty, battery health and return rights.
5. Protect a working computer
Use a correctly sized protective sleeve, avoid charging or operating the notebook on soft surfaces that trap heat, and maintain a current backup. These steps cannot restore Apple service eligibility, but they can extend the useful life of hardware that still works.

The practical bottom line for owners
The October 14, 2026 listing means Apple has ended ordinary hardware-service support for the 2017 12-inch MacBook and cannot supply normal genuine parts through its service network. A battery replacement may still be available for up to 10 years after the model’s distribution ended, but only while parts last. Your Mac does not become unusable: decide based on battery condition, software compatibility, repair alternatives, portability preferences and the verified cost of a replacement.
