To add a VIP in Apple Mail, use the sender’s contact card on iPhone or iPad, or click the star beside the sender’s name in a Mac message header. Removing a VIP is less fully documented in Apple’s guides: the available control and steps may depend on your software version.
What VIP status does in Mail
VIP status helps you identify and collect email from selected senders. Apple says a star appears next to VIP senders’ names in message headers. On Mac, messages from VIP senders are collected in the VIP mailbox, including messages that are part of a conversation; Apple describes this as a type of Smart Mailbox. Apple’s Mac guide says Mail supports up to 100 VIPs, but does not specify a guide publication year. Apple Mail for Mac user guide

Remove someone from VIP
On iPhone or iPad
Apple’s cited iPhone and iPad guide explains how to add VIPs and show the VIP mailbox, but does not confirm a complete removal sequence. Open a message from the person and tap the sender’s name or address to view the contact card; look for the available remove-from-VIP control there. The control’s exact wording and location depend on the software version, so do not rely on a specific button label.

Apple confirms that a VIP sender must be removed from VIP before that sender can be blocked, but its guidance does not provide a complete standalone removal sequence. If you are trying to block a sender, Apple’s Personal Safety guide identifies Remove from VIP as a prerequisite; follow the Mail interface shown in your version rather than assuming a particular navigation path.
