The 2026 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max is still a formidable professional laptop, but its lead is workload-dependent—and the move from M4 Max is less dramatic than Apple’s headline figures might suggest. It makes the strongest case for buyers who need its high-end GPU, memory capacity, media engines, and large XDR display; M4 Max owners should weigh their actual applications before upgrading.

What the M5 Max MacBook Pro offers

Apple introduced the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max on March 3, 2026. The 16-inch model is configurable, so performance and capacity depend on the build. Apple lists an 18-core CPU and a choice of 32-core or 40-core GPU. The corresponding memory bandwidth figures are 460GB/s and 614GB/s. For the 40-core GPU, unified memory starts at 36GB and can be configured to 48GB, 64GB, or 128GB; SSD options start at 2TB and extend to 4TB or 8TB. Apple’s UK technical specifications give these configuration details.

Macworld’s review used a higher-end sample: an 18-core CPU, 40-core GPU, 128GB unified memory, 4TB SSD, and 16.2-inch display with nano-texture glass. Those review results should not be read as measurements of every configuration.

Display, media, and connections

The 16.2-inch display has a native resolution of 3456 × 2234 at 254 pixels per inch, with adaptive ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz. Apple rates sustained full-screen XDR brightness at 1,000 nits and peak HDR brightness at 1,600 nits. The M5 Max includes hardware-accelerated ray tracing, a 16-core Neural Engine, GPU Neural Accelerators, and media engines for H.264, HEVC, ProRes and ProRes RAW, plus AV1 decoding. Apple lists Thunderbolt 5/USB-C, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, a 3.5mm audio jack, and MagSafe 3; check the exact regional build when planning around ports.

Is it meaningfully faster than the M4 Max?

Apple says M5 Pro and M5 Max deliver up to 30 percent faster CPU performance and up to 50 percent higher graphics performance than its specified previous-generation comparators. These are Apple-reported maximums tied to its stated test conditions and preproduction configurations, not a guarantee that every application or M4 Max system will improve by those amounts. Apple also claims up to 4x faster LLM prompt processing than M4 Pro and M4 Max, and up to 8x AI image generation than M1 Pro and M1 Max. Those AI figures are likewise manufacturer claims, not independently verified outcomes across applications. Apple’s March 2026 announcement includes the comparison context and footnotes.

Macworld characterizes the M5 Max step over M4 Max as incremental, despite describing the new model as Apple’s fastest laptop. In its Geekbench comparison, Macworld reports the M5 Max ahead of M3 Ultra by 7 percent in multi-core CPU and 34 percent in single-core CPU. These are results in a named benchmark, not a prediction for a particular editing, rendering, or development workflow. Macworld’s review provides its tested configuration and results.

How its performance compares with other laptops

There is no single benchmark that settles which laptop is “fastest” for every job. Notebookcheck’s review, updated October 5, 2026, shows the M5 Max winning one comparison and trailing in another:

Does the design feel old?

The “showing its age” case is chiefly about how familiar the machine is and how much the generation-to-generation gains matter, not proof that the laptop has become slow. For an M4 Max owner whose demanding jobs already finish quickly, an incremental CPU update may not change the day-to-day experience enough to justify replacing the system. A buyer moving from an older Mac, or a professional whose workload benefits from the M5 Max’s configured GPU, memory bandwidth, or media engines, may see a more compelling reason to choose it.

Reports about a future touchscreen, tandem OLED display, or thinner chassis remain conditional rather than confirmed product specifications. WIRED discusses these possibilities as reports, not as a guaranteed next-generation redesign. WIRED’s coverage should therefore be treated as speculation about a possible future model.

Battery life: claims and test results are different

Apple rates the 16-inch model for up to 22 hours of video streaming or up to 16 hours of wireless web use. Macworld measured 1,475 minutes in a continuous saved-video loop—more than 24 hours—but explicitly notes that the test was not designed to be stressful. The two results use different methods and should not be compared as if they measure the same workload. The Apple figures and test qualifications appear in its technical specifications; Macworld describes its loop test in its review.

Who should buy it—and who should wait?

It makes sense if

  • You need a 16-inch macOS workstation now and your work benefits from the M5 Max’s GPU, media engines, or high memory bandwidth.
  • Your projects need more unified memory or internal SSD capacity than your current laptop provides, and you can select the configuration that fits rather than assuming every M5 Max has the review sample’s 128GB memory and 4TB drive.
  • You value the large high-resolution XDR display, high refresh rate, and listed connections for your work setup.

Consider keeping your current Mac if

  • You already have an M4 Max and your applications do not show a bottleneck that the new configuration would address.
  • Your decision rests on a blanket claim that it beats every discrete-GPU Windows laptop: Notebookcheck’s cited graphics test shows the tested RTX 5090 Laptop GPU system ahead.
  • You can wait and are primarily interested in rumored display or chassis changes. Those possibilities have not been established as features of a confirmed future model.

What to compare before choosing a configuration

Compare the work you actually do, not just the chip name. Check the specific GPU core count, memory and SSD capacity, and whether the benchmark or application result reflects a similar system. For sustained tasks, look for results from the same workload and note the test method. Also account for display requirements, battery use under your real workload, and the ports needed for external devices. The 32-core and 40-core GPU versions are distinct configurations, so a score from one should not be attributed to the other.
