Yes. The MacBook Neo has a measurably weaker built-in camera than the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 (2025), according to DXOMARK’s tests published October 14, 2026. The Pro scored 110 versus 98 for the Neo, a 12-point lead. DXOMARK ranked the Pro first among the tested laptops and the Neo fourth. That advantage is most relevant to frequent video callers who need dependable exposure, dynamic range, focus and detail; the Neo still performs well in several indoor and low-light situations and costs substantially less.
How large is the MacBook Pro’s camera advantage?
DXOMARK’s overall built-in-camera scores show a clear but not transformative gap:
| Model | DXOMARK camera score | DXOMARK ranking | Listed launch price |
|---|---|---|---|
| MacBook Pro 14-inch (M5, 2025) | 110 | 1st | $1,799 (DXOMARK, 2026) |
| MacBook Neo | 98 | 4th | $699 (DXOMARK, 2026) |
The Pro’s 12-point lead is a relative result within DXOMARK’s laptop-camera protocol, not a promise that every call will look exactly 12 points better. Room lighting, camera position, the video-call application and network compression can change what viewers see. The prices above are launch-price context reported by DXOMARK, not current store prices or a guarantee of availability.

Exposure and dynamic range
The Pro delivers accurate face exposure with extended dynamic range. In practical terms, faces are more likely to remain properly lit when a bright window, lamp or other high-contrast background is in the frame. The Neo also exposes faces accurately from indoor conditions into low light and has good indoor HDR, but DXOMARK observed visible clipping in low-light scenes. Bright areas can therefore lose detail sooner on the Neo.

Noise and retained detail
DXOMARK found the Pro’s noise well controlled while preserving reasonable detail. The Neo showed barely visible indoor noise, which is a strength for ordinary rooms, but its portrait shots had limited texture detail. The Pro is the safer choice when facial detail matters, especially in dimmer calls where aggressive noise reduction can make skin and hair look softer.
Focus reliability
The Pro’s focus was reliable in most tested conditions. DXOMARK did not identify a comparable focus strength for the Neo in its summary, so users who frequently move, hold objects toward the camera or switch between near and far subjects have more evidence in favor of the Pro.

What the MacBook Neo still does well
- Skin tones: DXOMARK reports good skin-tone rendering indoors and in low light.
- Indoor HDR: The Neo handles indoor high-contrast scenes well overall.
- Face exposure: Faces remain accurately exposed from indoor lighting into low-light conditions.
- Indoor noise: Noise is barely visible indoors under the tested conditions.
Those results make the Neo a capable webcam for routine one-to-one calls, classes and meetings, particularly when the room is evenly lit. Its lower score does not mean the image is unusable; it indicates fewer reserves when conditions become difficult.
Known limitations of each camera
MacBook Neo
- Visible clipping in low-light scenes can remove detail from bright areas.
- Portrait shots show limited texture detail.
- Indoor color rendering can be slightly unstable, so hues may shift subtly during a call or between scenes.
MacBook Pro 14-inch (M5, 2025)
- White-balance and color inaccuracies occur occasionally.
- Fine detail decreases when the subject is farther away, around 80 centimeters.
The Pro therefore leads on the balance of exposure, dynamic range, noise, detail and focus, but it is not flawless. Its color and distance-detail limitations remain visible in some setups.

How DXOMARK tested the webcams
DXOMARK evaluates the image quality of a laptop’s built-in camera during video calls with one or multiple people across varied lighting conditions. The assessment emphasizes faces while also measuring color reproduction, texture, noise and image artifacts. Its laptop protocol combines objective measurements with more than 20 hours of perceptual evaluation in controlled laboratory and real-life scenarios.
DXOMARK describes the work on its MacBook Neo test page this way: “We put the Apple Macbook Neo through our rigorous DXOMARK Laptop test suite to measure its performance in sound, camera and display.” It also explains that its camera tests assess built-in-camera image quality during calls in a variety of lighting conditions. These methods provide a consistent comparison, but they cannot reproduce every room, conferencing app or operating-system processing path.

Which MacBook camera should video callers choose?
Choose the MacBook Neo when price and normal indoor calls matter most
At DXOMARK’s listed launch prices, the Neo costs $1,100 less than the Pro. If your calls take place at a desk with even lighting and you do not need maximum facial detail, the Neo’s good skin tones, face exposure, indoor HDR and low visible noise cover the basics at a much lower entry price.

Choose the MacBook Pro when webcam quality is a priority
The Pro’s 110 score and first-place ranking support paying more when you spend substantial time on video meetings, record presentations or work in rooms with backlighting and changing illumination. Its extended dynamic range, reliable focus and better noise/detail balance address the situations in which a basic webcam most often looks weak.
Best Value
- Quad-core 8th-Generation Intel Core i5 Processor
- Brilliant Retina Display with True Tone technology
- Touch Bar and Touch ID
- Intel Iris Plus Graphics 645
- Ultrafast SSD
Improve either camera with the same setup fundamentals
- Place a soft light in front of your face rather than relying on a bright window behind you.
- Keep your face within a comfortable working distance; DXOMARK specifically notes reduced Pro fine detail at about 80 cm.
- Check the preview in your actual calling app, because app processing and compression can alter color and detail.
- Use a stable camera position and avoid rapid movement if the scene is dim, where the Neo’s clipping and texture limits are more likely to show.
Bottom line for the Neo-versus-Pro question
The MacBook Pro’s built-in camera is objectively better in DXOMARK’s October 2026 results, scoring 12 points higher and ranking first versus the Neo’s fourth place. The difference is most apparent in dynamic range, noise/detail preservation and focus reliability. The Neo remains a strong value for ordinary indoor calls, with good skin tones, face exposure, HDR and low noise, but it gives up performance in low-light highlights, portrait texture and color stability to reach its lower launch price.
