Apple says the M6 is up to 1.2× faster than the M5 in multithreaded CPU performance. That is a best-case, workload-dependent comparison—not a promise that every Mac or app will run 20% faster. Apple also reports separate gains for AI GPU compute, graphics geometry, and memory bandwidth, while one early Geekbench result offers a useful but unverified CPU datapoint.
Apple’s M6-versus-M5 performance claims
Apple’s August 25, 2026 announcement gives a direct CPU comparison: M6 delivers up to 1.2× the M5’s multithreaded CPU performance. “Up to” describes the strongest result in the workloads Apple measured; it is not a guaranteed uplift across applications.
| Measure | Apple’s M6 claim versus M5 | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Multithreaded CPU | Up to 1.2× faster | CPU performance across multiple threads; the result varies by workload. |
| Peak GPU compute for AI | Nearly 30% higher | Peak AI-oriented GPU compute, not a general speedup for every graphics or AI app. |
| Geometry rate for complex graphics | 50% higher | A graphics-specific geometry metric. |
| Unified memory bandwidth | 10% higher: up to 170GB/s versus 153GB/s | How quickly the chip can move data to and from unified memory; it does not directly translate into an equal application speed increase. |
These are different kinds of measurement. A higher AI compute peak, geometry rate, or memory bandwidth should not be added to the CPU figure or described as a general performance gain. Apple’s M6 announcement also says M6 delivers the world’s fastest single-threaded performance, but its direct M6-to-M5 ratio is for multithreaded performance.
What the early Geekbench result shows
A Geekbench Browser record for an M6 Mac18,5, uploaded September 15, 2026, reports Geekbench 7 scores of 4,071 single-core and 22,783 multi-core. MacRumors compared that one result with M5 averages of 3,641 single-core and 17,948 multi-core. In that comparison, the M6 submission is about 12% higher in single-core and 27% higher in multi-core.

The M6 number is a single result that MacRumors described as unverified, not an independently replicated average. The M5 figures are averages from a different system, so this is not a matched test of otherwise identical computers. Geekbench scores also do not measure GPU performance, memory bandwidth, battery life, power use, or how quickly a particular app completes a task. Treat the scores as an early CPU comparison, not a definitive estimate of everyday gains. The individual Geekbench Browser record and MacRumors comparison provide the result and its caveats.
Why the chip name alone is not a whole-Mac comparison
Apple’s Mac mini specifications list the M6 and M5 Pro, not a standard M5 Mac mini. M5 Pro is a different chip tier and configuration, so its specifications should not be treated as the baseline M5 in Apple’s direct M6-versus-M5 performance claim.

| Mac mini configuration listed by Apple | CPU and GPU | Memory options | SSD storage options |
|---|---|---|---|
| M6 | 12-core CPU; 12-core GPU | 16GB, configurable to 24GB or 32GB | 256GB, configurable up to 2TB |
| M5 Pro | 15-core CPU and 16-core GPU; also listed with an 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU | 24GB, configurable to 48GB or 64GB | 512GB, configurable up to 8TB |
The M6 specification also lists a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. These are Apple’s listed Mac mini configurations, not a controlled comparison between equivalent systems. Differences in core counts, memory capacity, and storage mean a buyer comparing two complete Mac minis is comparing more than the processor generation. Check the exact model and configuration in Apple’s Mac mini technical specifications.

How to apply the numbers to your workload
- CPU-heavy work that uses multiple cores: Apple’s up-to-1.2× multithreaded claim is the relevant headline, but the gain for a specific app is not established by that maximum.
- Single-threaded work: Apple makes a broad single-threaded performance statement, while the early Geekbench comparison suggests a higher single-core score in one submission. Neither establishes a universal app-level percentage.
- AI tasks that use GPU compute: The nearly 30% peak-compute claim is relevant only when the software uses that capability; it is not a blanket AI task speedup.
- Complex graphics: The 50% geometry-rate claim concerns a specific graphics measure. It does not promise that rendering, games, or other visual applications will finish 50% faster.
- Memory-intensive tasks: The 10% bandwidth increase may matter for workloads constrained by data movement, but bandwidth alone does not predict total task time.
- Choosing a complete Mac: Compare matched memory and storage configurations where possible, and look for repeatable tests in the applications you use. The cited claims do not establish a general real-world performance percentage.
How M5’s earlier improvement fits in
Apple’s October 2025 M5 release said M5 offered up to 15% faster multithreaded performance than M4 and 153GB/s of unified memory bandwidth. That is historical context for M5’s position; it is not evidence for the size of the M6-to-M5 gain. Apple said the M5 comparisons used selected industry-standard benchmarks and identified preproduction and production test systems in its M5 release.
