Apple’s M5 Ultra is the faster, higher-bandwidth Mac Studio chip on paper, but its headline gains are Apple-reported “up to” results—not a promise that every app will run faster by the same amount. The choice comes down to whether your work benefits from its newer CPU, GPU and AI capabilities, up to 512GB of unified memory, and newer connectivity enough to justify the price of a new system.
What is the difference between M5 Ultra and M3 Ultra?
M5 Ultra is Apple’s newer Ultra chip, announced for Mac Studio on August 25, 2026. Preorders opened that day and customer availability began September 22. Apple said the 512GB unified-memory version would follow in late October, so check the current configuration listing if you need that capacity. The M5 Ultra Mac Studio had a U.S. starting price of $5,499 at announcement; that is a dated base price, not a quote for every configuration or region. Apple’s announcement
| Specification | M5 Ultra | M3 Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Up to 36 cores | Apple’s benchmark configuration: 32 cores |
| GPU | Up to 80 cores | Apple’s benchmark configuration: 80 cores |
| Neural Engine | 32 cores | not stated in the cited Apple specifications |
| Unified memory | Up to 512GB; Apple’s performance comparison used 256GB | Apple’s performance comparison used 256GB |
| Memory bandwidth | 1.2TB/s, which Apple says is 50% higher than M3 Ultra | Apple’s comparison implies 800GB/s, based on its 50% increase claim |
| Architecture | Four dies joined with UltraFusion, formed from two dual-die M5 Max chips | not stated in the cited Apple materials |
| External displays and connectivity | Up to eight displays; Thunderbolt 5, 10Gb Ethernet, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 | not stated here; check the specifications for the exact system configuration |
Apple’s Mac Studio technical specifications list the M5 Ultra system’s features. The M3 Ultra comparison configuration is useful context: Apple compared an 80-core M3 Ultra GPU with an 80-core M5 Ultra GPU, rather than comparing the top M5 GPU with a lower-bin M3 GPU. The comparison still does not make the full systems identical in every respect.

Apple’s August 2026 comparison reports these maximum gains over M3 Ultra. Apple tested preproduction Mac Studio systems with a 36-core CPU, 80-core GPU and 256GB memory for M5 Ultra, and a 32-core CPU, 80-core GPU and 256GB memory for M3 Ultra. Testing used selected industry-standard benchmarks; these figures are Apple’s results, not independent testing or universal application speedups. Apple’s comparative announcement

- AI compute: Up to 4.5× peak GPU compute for AI.
- Graphics: Up to 40% faster graphics.
- Memory bandwidth: 1.2TB/s, described by Apple as 50% more than M3 Ultra.
Apple also cites task-specific results: up to 4× faster LLM prompt processing in LM Studio, up to 4.3× faster text-to-image performance, and up to 1.7× faster Maxon Redshift scene rendering. Those are also Apple-reported results from its selected tests on preproduction systems. They indicate that some workloads may benefit substantially; they do not establish the same gains in other software, projects, or settings.
Which workloads are most likely to benefit?
CPU-heavy work
Compiling, simulation, and other tasks that keep many CPU cores busy are the most relevant cases for Apple’s multithreaded result. A workflow limited by single-core performance, storage, memory capacity, or software behavior may see a smaller difference.

GPU rendering and visual effects
Apple’s graphics and Redshift claims make GPU rendering and effects worth investigating if they are central to your work. Results depend on the application, project, and how effectively the software uses the GPU. For a specific workload, compare render times or export times on the software and project you actually use rather than treating Apple’s maximum as a forecast.

M5 Ultra’s Neural Engine has 32 cores, and Apple says each M5 Ultra GPU core includes a Neural Accelerator. Its AI figures are peak-compute comparisons, not a guarantee for every model or tool. Software support and workload type matter: prompt processing, image generation, and model training are different tasks and can scale differently.

Memory can be a more important constraint than peak compute when a local model or dataset must fit in unified memory. M5 Ultra supports up to 512GB, but availability of that configuration should be checked at purchase time. More memory bandwidth can help move data, but does not substitute for having enough capacity.
Should you buy M5 Ultra, choose M3 Ultra, or keep your current Mac?
Choose an M5 Ultra Mac Studio if
- Your work is regularly bottlenecked by CPU, GPU, AI compute, or memory bandwidth, and the time saved has meaningful value.
- You need more than the memory capacity available on the M3 Ultra system you are considering, and the M5 Ultra configuration you need is orderable.
- You need the newer system’s Thunderbolt 5 or its listed support for up to eight external displays.
Consider an M3 Ultra system if
- Its performance and memory capacity already meet your needs, particularly if you can find a configuration at a meaningfully lower price.
- Your key apps or workflows have not been shown to benefit from the newer chip’s capabilities.
Apple’s $5,499 U.S. launch price for M5 Ultra is not a like-for-like comparison with a higher-memory or larger-SSD build, nor does it establish the current price or availability of M3 Ultra systems. Compare the exact memory, storage, region, and seller listings available to you before deciding.

Keep an M3 Ultra if
For an owner, the useful comparison is your measured project time and any memory or connectivity limit—not the percentage in a best-case vendor benchmark by itself. If your current Mac completes work within acceptable deadlines and has enough memory for your projects, the evidence here does not establish that a replacement will be worthwhile for you.

What should you check before paying for an upgrade?
- Identify the bottleneck. Record the parts of your actual workflow that take the most time or fail because of memory, graphics, or connection limits.
- Match the configuration. Compare systems with the memory and SSD capacity you need; avoid treating the base price as the cost of a high-memory build.
- Check software-specific evidence. Look for results using your application and a workload comparable to yours. Apple’s cited benchmarks do not cover every app or project.
- Check current listings. Verify regional price, stock, and whether the exact memory configuration is available. Launch details can change as configurations become orderable.
- Calculate value from time saved. For an existing M3 Ultra, compare the likely value of reduced wait times against the full cost of replacing the system.
Does M5 Ultra change connectivity?
Apple lists Thunderbolt 5, 10Gb Ethernet, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and support for up to eight external displays for M5 Ultra Mac Studio. Thunderbolt 5 can be relevant to external storage, PCIe expansion chassis, and hubs, but confirm the ports, display requirements, and compatibility needed for your particular setup in Apple’s technical specifications.
