Apple M1 Ultra is a system on a chip (SoC) for Mac, announced on March 8, 2022. It combines two M1 Max dies through Apple’s UltraFusion packaging architecture and was offered inside the 2022 Mac Studio. It is the computer’s processor—not a standalone desktop or an ordinary user-replaceable upgrade.
How M1 Ultra combines two M1 Max dies
Apple says UltraFusion connects the two M1 Max dies using a silicon interposer and more than 10,000 signals. Apple reported 2.5TB/s of low-latency bandwidth across that connection. The architecture allows the combined system to be presented to software as one chip, rather than as two separate processors. These are Apple’s descriptions of the design. Apple’s March 2022 announcement
Apple said the chip contains 114 billion transistors. That figure, like the interconnect bandwidth, describes Apple’s announced design rather than an independent measurement. Apple’s announcement
M1 Ultra specifications
| Component | M1 Ultra specification |
|---|---|
| CPU | 20 cores: 16 high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores |
| GPU | Apple announced a 64-core GPU; the 2022 Mac Studio was also available with a 48-core GPU |
| Neural Engine | 32 cores; Apple said it can perform up to 22 trillion operations per second |
| Unified memory | 64GB base configuration in the 2022 Mac Studio; 128GB option |
| Memory bandwidth | 800GB/s |
| Media engines | Two video decode engines, four video encode engines, and four ProRes encode/decode engines in the 2022 Mac Studio |
| Supported video formats | Hardware acceleration for H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW |
Specifications reflect Apple’s launch announcement and its Mac Studio (2022) technical specifications. The 64-core GPU is the headline configuration Apple announced; the 48-core option is a separate Mac Studio configuration. Likewise, 128GB is an available memory option, not the base memory capacity.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What computer used M1 Ultra?
Apple introduced M1 Ultra as the chip powering the all-new Mac Studio in 2022. The chip itself does not determine every system feature: for example, Apple’s support specifications say the Mac Studio can support up to five displays. That is a capability of the computer and its configuration, not a standalone feature of M1 Ultra. Apple’s announcement Apple Mac Studio (2022) specifications
What workloads did Apple target?
Apple positioned M1 Ultra for demanding desktop work, including code compilation, large 3D environments, graphics processing, machine learning, audio production, and ProRes video work. The architecture and core counts do not mean every app or task will benefit equally; results depend on software support and the particular workload.

Apple reported that the 20-core CPU delivered 90 percent higher multithreaded performance than a specified 16-core PC desktop chip in the same power envelope. It also said a Mac Studio with M1 Ultra could play up to 18 streams of 8K ProRes 422. Both are Apple test claims, not universal results: Apple said testing was conducted in February 2022 on preproduction Mac Studio systems and documented particular comparison systems, applications, media, and configurations. Apple cautioned that performance tests use specific systems and reflect approximate performance. Apple’s test notes and announcement

M2 Ultra followed M1 Ultra, with Apple announcing the newer chip in June 2023. Apple described M2 Ultra as up to 20 percent faster in CPU performance, up to 30 percent faster in GPU performance, and up to 40 percent faster in Neural Engine performance compared with M1 Ultra. These are Apple’s generational comparisons, not results from an independent benchmark. Apple’s M2 Ultra announcement

When comparing systems built around the two generations, consider the exact CPU and GPU configuration, unified memory capacity and bandwidth, media-engine workload, software compatibility, and the benchmark or application being used. Apple’s cited announcements establish the generational comparison but do not establish current product-line availability.
