Apple has introduced the MacBook Neo, a new lower-cost MacBook starting at $599 in the United States. Pre-orders opened on March 4, 2026, and retail availability began March 11. Apple also lists a $499 education price.
The Neo is not a replacement for the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. It creates a new entry-level MacBook tier for students, families, first-time Mac buyers, and people who want macOS without paying for Apple’s higher-end notebooks. Its main attractions are the A18 Pro chip, compact 13-inch design, long quoted battery life, and access to the Apple ecosystem. Its main compromises are fixed 8GB memory, only two USB-C ports, an asymmetric port layout, one-external-display support, a non-backlit keyboard, and a mechanical trackpad.

The MacBook Neo is powered by Apple’s A18 Pro, the type of processor traditionally associated with the iPhone rather than the Mac. In the available launch materials, it is the first MacBook identified as using an A-series iPhone-class chip instead of an M-series Mac chip.
The A18 Pro in the Neo has a six-core CPU, five-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and 60GB/s of memory bandwidth. That gives Apple the basic ingredients needed for a modern macOS computer: general-purpose processing, graphics acceleration, on-device machine-learning features, and support for current applications.
#1 Best Overall
- This 2-meter charge cable features a magnetic MagSafe 3 connector that helps guide the plug to the charging port of your Mac notebook.
- Pair it with a compatible USB-C power adapter to conveniently charge your notebook from a wall outlet and take advantage of fast-charging capabilities.
- The magnetic connection is strong enough to resist most unintended disconnects, but if someone trips on the cable,
- it releases so your Mac notebook stays put. An LED turns amber when the battery is charging and green when it’s fully charged. Made with a woven design for long-lasting durability.
- USB-C Power Adapter sold separately.
The chip choice also helps explain the Neo’s position in Apple’s range. Apple is not presenting the product as a cheaper MacBook Air with identical capabilities. It is using a different processor class and a simpler feature set to create a lower starting price while retaining macOS, Apple Intelligence support, and the company’s ecosystem features.
Be careful with Apple’s performance comparisons
Apple says the MacBook Neo is up to 50 percent faster for everyday tasks and up to three times faster for certain on-device artificial-intelligence workloads than a specified bestselling PC laptop using the latest shipping Intel Core Ultra 5 processor.
Those figures are Apple’s claims, not independent test results. Apple’s comparisons used preproduction Neo systems with 8GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD, particular browser versions, and selected workloads including Speedometer, Photoshop effects, and Affinity benchmarks. The comparison was against a defined PC class, not every laptop with an Intel Core Ultra 5 processor.
That makes the claims useful as an indication of what Apple wants to demonstrate, but not as proof that the Neo will be faster than every comparable Windows laptop or every workload. Sustained professional applications, large projects, thermal behavior, and long-term performance still require independent testing.
8GB of memory is the most important buying constraint
Every listed MacBook Neo configuration has 8GB of unified memory. Apple does not present the memory as configurable in its technical specifications, so buyers should treat 8GB as a product constraint rather than assume they can order more or upgrade it later.
For web browsing, office documents, email, video calls, streaming, light photo editing, and ordinary macOS applications, 8GB may be adequate for the intended entry-level audience. However, memory is shared by the CPU and GPU, and demanding users can reach the limit sooner when running many applications, large creative projects, virtual machines, development tools, or multiple browser-heavy workflows at the same time.
This is the clearest reason not to buy the Neo solely because its processor sounds powerful. The A18 Pro may be capable, but the fixed memory ceiling affects how comfortably the computer can handle heavier multitasking over several years.
Display, design, colors, and input devices
The Neo has a 13-inch Liquid Retina IPS display with a native resolution of 2408 × 1506 pixels. At 219 pixels per inch, it should provide the sharp text and detailed interface that buyers generally expect from a modern MacBook. Apple lists 500 nits of brightness, support for one billion colors, and an sRGB color gamut.
The sRGB specification makes the screen a sensible fit for schoolwork, office work, web content, streaming, and everyday photo use. Buyers working in color-critical professional production should check whether the Neo’s display coverage and calibration options meet their workflow before choosing it over a higher-tier MacBook.
The enclosure measures 11.71 inches wide, 8.12 inches deep, and 0.50 inches thick. Apple lists the weight at 2.7 pounds, or 1.23 kilograms, while noting that weight can vary with configuration and manufacturing process. The four finishes are silver, blush, citrus, and indigo, giving the Neo a more visibly playful identity than Apple’s usual professional-oriented laptop palette.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The computer includes a Magic Keyboard and a Multi-Touch trackpad. Apple’s live-launch coverage reported two notable cost-saving omissions: the keyboard is not backlit, and the trackpad uses a mechanical design rather than the haptic Force Touch-style trackpad found on more expensive MacBooks. Those details are attributed to the launch coverage rather than independent hands-on testing.

A non-backlit keyboard matters most to students and commuters who regularly work in dim rooms, airplanes, or lecture halls. The mechanical trackpad may still provide normal pointer control and gestures, but buyers accustomed to the consistent click feel of a haptic MacBook trackpad should try the Neo in person if that interaction is important to them.
Battery life and what comes in the box
Apple rates the MacBook Neo for up to 16 hours of video streaming and up to 11 hours of wireless web use. These are not universal battery-life guarantees. Apple says the figures came from January 2026 testing of preproduction systems with an A18 Pro chip, 8GB of unified memory, and a 256GB SSD.
The tests used Safari video streaming or browsing across 25 popular websites, with display brightness set to eight clicks from the bottom. Actual runtime will vary with brightness, wireless conditions, applications, video calls, external devices, and the selected configuration.

The box includes the MacBook Neo, a 20W USB-C power adapter, and a 1.5-meter USB-C charge cable. That means buyers do not need to purchase a charger simply to use the computer. A higher-output USB-C charger can still be a practical travel or desk accessory for people who want to charge other devices at the same time, but it is optional rather than a required purchase.
The two USB-C ports are not equivalent
The Neo’s compact design comes with a port layout that deserves more attention than a simple specification list might suggest. It has two USB-C ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack, but the USB-C ports have different capabilities.
| Port | Capabilities | What to use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Faster, display-capable USB-C port | USB 3 data transfer up to 10Gbps, charging, and DisplayPort | External monitors, faster USB devices, hubs, and high-speed storage |
| Slower USB-C port | USB 2 data transfer up to 480Mbps and charging | Charging or low-speed peripherals |
Apple’s support documentation identifies the ports by position and warns that the faster, display-capable port is the one to use for an external monitor or a USB 3 device. On the Neo’s layout, accessory guidance identifies this as the top USB-C port. Do not assume that either port will deliver the same transfer speed or video output.
The difference is substantial. USB 3 at up to 10Gbps is appropriate for many external SSDs and high-speed accessories. USB 2 at up to 480Mbps is much slower and can become frustrating when moving large photo libraries, video files, or backups. If you connect a hub, put it on the faster port.
One external display only
The MacBook Neo supports one external display at up to 4K resolution and 60Hz while simultaneously running its built-in screen at its full native resolution. That is sufficient for a single-monitor home office or classroom setup, but it is a meaningful limitation for anyone planning a two-monitor desk or a laptop-plus-multiple-display workstation.
It also supports DisplayPort through the appropriate USB-C port, but Apple lists no HDMI port. Users with HDMI monitors, USB-A accessories, SD cards, microSD cards, or additional USB-C devices will need an adapter or hub.
A MacBook Neo USB-C hub is therefore one of the more practical optional accessories for this computer. Satechi’s USB-C Snap Hub is specifically designed around the 2026 MacBook Neo’s dual-port layout and adds HDMI, USB-A, USB-C, SD, and microSD connectivity while supporting up to 45W pass-through charging. Compatibility still needs to be confirmed for the exact hub and operating setup, and the hub must use the Neo’s faster top USB-C port. Generic hubs should not automatically be assumed to support the Neo’s display and speed requirements.
Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6E where available. Wireless features and regional availability should be checked against the local Apple specification page, particularly if the computer is being purchased outside the United States.

- DESIGNED BY APPLE — Ideal for charging, syncing, and transferring data between USB-C devices, this 2-meter charge cable is made with a woven design and has USB-C connectors on both ends.
- FAST AND CONVENIENT CHARGING — Supports charging of up to 240 watts and transfers data at USB 2 rates. Pair the USB-C Charge Cable with a compatible USB-C power adapter to conveniently charge your devices from a wall outlet and even take advantage of the fast-charging feature on select iPhone and Mac models.
- WHAT’S IN THE BOX — Apple USB-C Woven Charge Cable only. Power adapter sold separately.
- CABLE LENGTH — 2 meters (6 feet).
That combination is aimed at the ordinary uses most entry-level laptop buyers care about: video calls, online classes, voice communication, music, and streaming. The 1080p camera is a useful step beyond older low-resolution laptop webcams, while computational processing can help Apple improve the image without relying only on the camera sensor.
The Neo is not specified as having a larger multi-microphone studio system or a professional speaker setup. Buyers who need broadcast-quality video or audio should still plan on external equipment, which makes the single fast USB-C port and the need for a suitable hub more relevant.
macOS, Apple Intelligence, and the Apple ecosystem
The MacBook Neo runs macOS and includes Apple’s standard built-in applications, including Safari, Messages, Mail, Photos, iMovie, GarageBand, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, FaceTime, and Time Machine. Additional software can be installed through the Mac App Store, although some applications require an Apple Account and a compatible operating-system version.
For people moving from another Mac, Apple’s migration tools are intended to transfer data and settings. Apple also provides migration support for users moving from a Windows PC. The Neo supports Handoff, Universal Clipboard, and iPhone Mirroring, which can make it especially convenient for people who already use an iPhone and other Apple devices.
Apple Intelligence is supported, but Apple describes the feature set as being available in beta and says availability varies by region and language. Buyers should not assume that every Apple Intelligence function will be available on day one in every country, or that the feature list will remain identical as macOS changes.
This ecosystem integration is one of the Neo’s strongest arguments. A student who already uses an iPhone can receive messages, copy content between devices, mirror the phone, and move into familiar Apple applications without buying a higher-end Mac. A Windows user can also migrate, but should check software compatibility before switching if their school or workplace depends on Windows-only applications.
Should you buy the 256GB or 512GB model?
Apple lists two storage choices: 256GB and 512GB. Storage, unlike memory, is available in different configurations, so buyers should make this decision before ordering rather than expecting the base model to accommodate every future need.
Recommended Free Tools
- Choose 256GB if most of your files live in cloud storage, you use web applications, you stream media rather than download it, and your local software collection is modest.
- Choose 512GB if you keep a large photo library, video files, creative projects, games, development tools, or many applications on the laptop. It is the more defensible configuration for people who expect to work locally.
The 512GB model does not represent a measured performance advantage in Apple’s published specifications. Its benefit is capacity and the reduced need to manage files or rely on external storage.
For a 256GB buyer who works with large files, a portable USB-C SSD for MacBook Neo can provide additional working space or a backup destination. An external drive does not upgrade the Neo’s internal storage, and it will use the faster USB-C port if you want reasonable transfer speeds. A compatible SSD enclosure is another option for users who already own a suitable drive.
Who the MacBook Neo is for
The Neo makes the most sense for users whose work is centered on:
- Web browsing, email, documents, spreadsheets, and presentations
- Online classes and video calls
- Streaming music and video
- Light photo editing and personal video projects
- Apple’s built-in macOS applications
- iPhone and Mac ecosystem features
- Replacing an inexpensive Windows laptop or Chromebook
It is also a reasonable first Mac for a family member who needs a straightforward computer rather than a workstation. The lower launch price, compact size, color choices, and familiar macOS software make the product approachable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWho should choose a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro instead?
The Neo is less naturally suited to buyers who already know they need more than 8GB of memory, extensive local storage, multiple external displays, high-speed devices on both USB-C ports, or sustained professional workloads.

A MacBook Air is the more logical direction for someone who wants a stronger all-purpose MacBook platform and expects to keep the computer for demanding multitasking or heavier creative work. A MacBook Pro is more appropriate when the workload involves sustained professional production, advanced media work, multiple displays, or other capabilities associated with Apple’s higher-performance notebooks.
This is not a claim that the Neo cannot open professional applications. macOS supports many of them, and Apple has not positioned the Neo as software-incompatible with professional work. The issue is headroom: fixed 8GB memory, limited connectivity, and one external display make it a difficult fit for users who already understand that their workflow is demanding.
Useful optional accessories
The Neo is usable out of the box, including its charger and cable. Accessories should be chosen around a specific need rather than treated as mandatory additions.

The MacBook Neo’s place in Apple’s March launch
The Neo arrived during a broader week of Apple hardware announcements. Apple also introduced the iPhone 17e, M4 iPad Air, M5 MacBook Air, M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro models, and updated Studio Display products.
That context matters because the Neo is not simply another refresh in the Air or Pro family. Apple used the launch sequence to fill a lower-cost gap in its Mac lineup while continuing to update its existing mainstream and professional products.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Early shipment numbers suggest strong interest, but not a proven long-term result
A MacRumors report citing IDC and TechCrunch said Apple shipped approximately 1.1 million MacBook Neo units in the first quarter of 2026, even though the product was available for only about three weeks of that quarter. The same report said the Neo exceeded the debut-quarter shipments of the M5 MacBook Air and M5 MacBook Pro, with 44 percent of global shipments going to the United States.
These are analyst and media-reported shipment figures, not unit sales reported by Apple. They should be read as an early market signal rather than proof of long-term success. The reported performance suggests the Neo may be strategically important in the $400-to-$699 notebook segment, where Apple historically had limited presence, but future demand, customer satisfaction, and replacement cycles remain separate questions.
Apple’s environmental claims
Apple says the MacBook Neo contains 60 percent recycled content. Its claims include 90 percent recycled aluminum, 100 percent recycled cobalt and 95 percent recycled lithium in the battery, recycled rare-earth elements in magnets, and recycled materials in selected circuit-board components.
Apple also says 45 percent of the electricity used in manufacturing comes from renewable electricity, the product is ENERGY STAR certified, and its packaging is fiber-based. The company separately describes the Neo as its lowest-carbon MacBook at launch and says the enclosure uses a forming process that consumes 50 percent less aluminum than traditional machining methods.
These are Apple’s environmental and manufacturing claims. They are useful disclosures about the product’s design goals, but they should not be confused with independent life-cycle testing or a complete assessment of repairability, durability, or total environmental impact.
What the launch does not yet establish
Apple’s specifications and launch claims establish the Neo’s listed hardware, software support, battery test conditions, and advertised comparisons. They do not establish independent real-world performance across every application, long-term battery health, durability, repairability, or sustained thermal behavior.

There is also no basis in the supplied launch material to call the Neo fanless, silent, or upgradeable. Those descriptions should not be assumed from its processor or compact design. Similarly, the Neo should not be described as independently faster than all comparable Windows laptops without verified testing.
Verdict: an accessible MacBook with unusually clear compromises
The MacBook Neo is significant because Apple finally has a MacBook positioned below the Air rather than asking budget buyers to stretch into the existing lineup. At its $599 U.S. launch price, it combines macOS, a 13-inch high-resolution display, an A18 Pro chip, a 1080p camera, Apple ecosystem features, and a quoted battery rating of up to 16 hours of video streaming.
Its compromises are equally clear. The 8GB memory ceiling is fixed in Apple’s listed configurations. One USB-C port is limited to USB 2 speeds, the faster port is also the one needed for displays and high-speed devices, and the machine supports only one external display. The keyboard is reported to be non-backlit, and the trackpad uses a mechanical design rather than the haptic system used by more expensive MacBooks.
For students, families, first-time Mac buyers, and everyday users, those trade-offs may be acceptable. For professionals, heavy multitaskers, multi-monitor users, and buyers who need substantial local storage or expansion, the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro remains the safer direction. The Neo is not an inexpensive version of every MacBook; it is a deliberately simplified MacBook for users whose needs fit within its limits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the MacBook Neo replacing the MacBook Air?
No. Apple positioned the MacBook Neo as a new, more accessible MacBook tier rather than a replacement for the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. The Air and Pro remain the better fit for buyers who need more memory headroom, more demanding sustained performance, or more advanced display and connectivity options.
Can the MacBook Neo’s 8GB of memory be upgraded?
Apple lists 8GB of unified memory in every configuration and does not present it as configurable. Buyers should therefore treat 8GB as fixed for the life of the computer rather than plan on adding memory later.
Which MacBook Neo USB-C port should I use for a monitor or fast storage?
Use the faster, display-capable USB-C port identified by Apple’s support documentation and accessory guidance as the top port. It supports USB 3 transfer speeds up to 10Gbps, charging, and DisplayPort. The other port supports USB 2 speeds up to 480Mbps and charging.
How many external monitors can the MacBook Neo run?
The Neo supports one external display at up to 4K resolution and 60Hz while its built-in display runs at full native resolution. It is not the right choice for a multi-monitor setup if you need more than one external screen.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Should I buy the 256GB or 512GB MacBook Neo?
The 256GB model is suitable for cloud-first users with modest local storage needs. Choose 512GB if you keep photos, video, games, creative projects, development tools, or many applications on the laptop. An external SSD can supplement either model, but it does not increase the internal capacity.
Does the MacBook Neo support Apple Intelligence?
Yes, but Apple describes Apple Intelligence as being available in beta and says feature availability varies by region and language. Check the current local software and feature requirements before relying on a specific function.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The $599 MacBook Neo is an appealing entry point into macOS, but its value depends on accepting 8GB of fixed memory, limited ports, and one-external-display support. It is a strong everyday laptop for students and families; buyers with professional workloads or ambitious desk setups should step up to a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro.
