Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT are complementary on a Mac, not interchangeable products. Apple Intelligence is built into supported macOS experiences such as Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground, Genmoji and Shortcuts. ChatGPT can be added as an optional extension inside some of those experiences. The separate ChatGPT Mac app is a dedicated assistant with its own chats, screenshot capture and supported desktop-app context.
The right choice depends on where you want assistance to appear, which Mac and macOS version you have, your language and region, whether you need a ChatGPT account or saved history, and whether you are comfortable granting desktop permissions.
Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT are different layers on a Mac
Apple Intelligence is an operating-system feature set. When available, it appears in Apple’s built-in interfaces rather than as one separate chat window. Its documented Mac roles include writing assistance, Siri responses, summaries, image creation, Genmoji and Shortcuts automation.

ChatGPT is a separate service and application. OpenAI’s Mac app gives you a dedicated conversation workspace and, with the necessary permissions, can work from selected desktop context. Apple also lets you connect ChatGPT to certain Apple Intelligence features. That connection is optional and does not require installing the standalone ChatGPT Mac app.

Think of the products this way:
- Apple Intelligence: help embedded in Apple’s system experiences.
- ChatGPT extension for Apple Intelligence: an optional hand-off for selected Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground and Shortcuts requests.
- ChatGPT Mac app: a separate assistant with its own chats, Work features and screenshot workflow.
Apple describes the optional integration as a way for users to tap ChatGPT for “broad world knowledge and expertise.” That is Apple’s description of the integration, not a comparative test of answer quality.
What each can do on a Mac

Where Apple Intelligence is the better fit
System-wide writing help
Writing Tools are designed to appear where you already write. They can assist with rewriting, proofreading and changing the tone or presentation of text in supported Apple experiences. If you want a quick revision without opening another application, this is the more native workflow.
When ChatGPT is enabled in Apple Intelligence, Compose can generate a draft from your instruction. The request still begins inside Apple’s writing workflow; you are not switching to the standalone ChatGPT window.
Siri requests that need more than Apple’s built-in answers
Siri remains the entry point for Apple Intelligence requests. For some questions, Siri can ask ChatGPT to help, including requests that involve a document or photo. This is useful when the question is naturally spoken or tied to something already in an Apple experience.
ChatGPT is not automatically used for every Siri request. The integration is optional, and Apple describes a confirmation step before a request is sent.
Image Playground, Genmoji and Apple’s creative features
Image Playground and Genmoji are Apple interfaces. ChatGPT can provide additional Image Playground styles when the extension is enabled, but the experience remains inside Apple’s feature rather than becoming the full ChatGPT image workflow.
Shortcuts automation
Apple documents Apple Intelligence models in Shortcuts and an option to use ChatGPT for more complex requests. This makes Apple Intelligence attractive when the desired result is part of a repeatable Mac automation: for example, a shortcut that receives text, asks for a transformation and passes the result to another action.

The exact actions and model choices can change with macOS releases. Build the shortcut on the Mac and language configuration you intend to use, then test its confirmation behavior before relying on it for unattended work.
Where the standalone ChatGPT Mac app is the better fit
A dedicated conversation workspace
The ChatGPT app gives you a persistent place to ask follow-up questions, organize a conversation and use the Chat and Work experiences offered by your current plan and workspace. This is different from invoking help through Siri or a Writing Tools popover.
Because app behavior, plan features and workspace controls can change, check the controls shown in your installed version rather than assuming that every ChatGPT account has the same tools.
Questions about an open app window
The screenshot workflow lets ChatGPT capture an open app window so you can ask about what is visible. This is useful for an error dialog, a layout problem or a visual setting that is difficult to describe in text.

Screenshot capture requires macOS Screen & System Audio Recording permission. Without that permission, the app cannot perform the documented capture workflow. Grant access only if you are comfortable with the scope of the permission, and remove it later in macOS privacy settings if you no longer need it.
Context from supported editors, coding tools and terminals
Work with Apps can bring selected context from supported text editors, coding tools and terminals into a ChatGPT conversation. Most supported apps use Accessibility access. Visual Studio Code uses an extension rather than the same general permission path.
For coding tasks, proposed edits are presented as diffs for review and application. This review step matters: inspect the changed lines, confirm the target file and run your normal tests before accepting a change.

Supported-app lists and workspace-administrator controls affect availability. A feature shown in one personal account may be hidden or restricted in a managed organization.

Apple Intelligence requirements
Apple’s current support guidance requires all of the following for Apple Intelligence on Mac:
- An Apple silicon Mac.
- macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later.
- At least 7 GB of storage on the device.
- A supported device language and Siri language that match.
- A region where the relevant Apple Intelligence features are available.
For macOS 26.1, Apple lists availability in most regions in English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese. “Most regions” does not mean every feature is available everywhere; check Apple’s current availability information for your location.
ChatGPT Mac app requirements
OpenAI’s current download requirements list macOS 14 or later and either Apple silicon (M1 or later) or an Intel processor. Therefore, an Intel Mac can meet the documented requirement for the ChatGPT app while failing Apple Intelligence’s Apple-silicon requirement.
That distinction is important before buying a new Mac. If your only goal is to use the standalone ChatGPT app, an Intel Mac may still qualify under the stated app requirement. If you want Apple Intelligence itself, the hardware requirement is Apple silicon.
ChatGPT integration availability
The Apple Intelligence extension is available only in regions where the ChatGPT app and service are available. Language support, service availability, Apple account settings, ChatGPT account status and macOS version can all affect what appears in Settings.
How to enable ChatGPT inside Apple Intelligence
Use this path on a compatible Mac:
- Open System Settings.
- Select Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Find the ChatGPT option and choose the control to enable it.
- Review the confirmation and account choices shown by macOS.
- Test the connection from a supported Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground or Shortcuts workflow.
A ChatGPT account is optional for the Apple integration. Sign in if you want eligible requests saved to your ChatGPT chat history. If you do not sign in, the integration can still be available, but history behavior differs from a signed-in account.

Apple says you choose what to send. The system asks before requests are sent, and photos or files always require confirmation. If you do not see the ChatGPT option, verify the Mac model, macOS version, language match and regional availability before treating it as an account problem.
How the standalone Mac app handles desktop context

- Install and open the ChatGPT Mac app that meets the current macOS requirement.
- When prompted, open macOS privacy settings and grant Screen & System Audio Recording permission if you want screenshot capture.
- Return to the app and choose the screenshot action for the supported open window.
- Inspect the captured image before sending it, especially if the window contains private messages, account details or confidential documents.
The permission applies to the screenshot workflow. It is not the same permission used by Work with Apps.
Work with Apps
- Open the ChatGPT app and choose the Work experience or the relevant context command.
- Grant Accessibility access when macOS requests it for a supported application.
- For Visual Studio Code, install and authorize the required extension instead of assuming general Accessibility access is sufficient.
- Select the supported app context you want to include.
- Review the resulting chat context or proposed diff before sharing, applying or executing anything.
Context brought into chats becomes part of the chat history under OpenAI’s documented behavior. Treat copied source code, terminal output and document text as conversation data, and apply your organization’s workspace rules before enabling the feature.

There is no single privacy rule that describes both products. The relevant boundary depends on the workflow.
When ChatGPT is called from Apple Intelligence
Apple says requests and attachments, along with limited request metadata, are sent to ChatGPT to fulfill an enabled request. macOS asks before sending requests, and photos or files require confirmation. You choose what to send. Signing in is needed if you want requests saved to your ChatGPT chat history.
These statements do not mean that every Apple Intelligence operation is processed the same way, nor that every operation is sent to ChatGPT. Apple Intelligence includes system features that can operate without the ChatGPT extension.

The standalone app has separate permissions for screenshots and app context. Screen capture uses Screen & System Audio Recording. Work with Apps generally uses Accessibility access, with a Visual Studio Code extension as a documented exception. Workspace administrators can limit availability, and context imported into chats becomes part of chat history.

Before using either route with confidential material, identify the exact feature, what content it will transmit or store, which account is active and whether an administrator controls the workspace.
A practical decision guide
Choose Apple Intelligence first when
- You have a compatible Apple silicon Mac, supported macOS, language and region.
- You want writing assistance directly where you type.
- You prefer to ask Siri rather than open a separate assistant.
- You want Image Playground, Genmoji or Shortcuts in Apple’s native workflow.
- You want the option to call ChatGPT without adopting the standalone app.
Choose the standalone ChatGPT app when
- You want a dedicated conversation workspace with ongoing follow-up questions.
- You need screenshot-based questions about an open app window.
- You want context from supported editors, coding tools or terminals.
- You are comfortable granting Screen & System Audio Recording or Accessibility access for the specific workflow.
- Your Mac is Intel-based and meets the ChatGPT app requirement but cannot run Apple Intelligence.
Use both when your work crosses the boundary
Many Mac users can combine the products without treating them as competitors. Use Writing Tools or Siri for quick, in-place help; open ChatGPT when you need a longer conversation, a screenshot or supported desktop context. Enabling the Apple extension does not turn the standalone app into a system feature, and installing the app does not automatically enable Apple Intelligence.
Common setup problems and fixes
The ChatGPT option is missing in Apple Intelligence & Siri
- Confirm that the Mac uses Apple silicon.
- Check that macOS is Sequoia 15.1 or later.
- Verify that device and Siri languages match a supported language.
- Check whether ChatGPT is available in your region.
- Install current system updates and revisit System Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri.
Siri does not ask before sending a request
Only requests that are eligible for the ChatGPT extension are handed off. Try a supported Siri request involving a document or photo, and watch for the confirmation prompt. Photos and files require confirmation; a missing prompt can indicate that the request stayed within Apple’s own processing path.

Screenshot capture fails
Open macOS privacy settings and confirm that the ChatGPT app has Screen & System Audio Recording permission. Quit and reopen the app after changing the permission, then try a supported open window rather than a hidden or protected surface.
Work with Apps cannot see an editor or terminal
Check that the application is supported, grant Accessibility access when requested and verify that workspace policy has not disabled the feature. For Visual Studio Code, check the required extension. If a code diff appears, review and apply it manually rather than expecting automatic file changes.
A feature works on one Mac but not another
Compare the two Macs’ processor type, macOS release, language, region, ChatGPT account and workspace. Apple Intelligence and the ChatGPT app have different hardware requirements, so identical app installations do not guarantee identical capabilities.
What cannot be concluded from the available evidence
There is no named, comparable study establishing that Apple Intelligence or ChatGPT is faster, more accurate, more productive or more satisfying on a Mac. The concrete figures available here are compatibility requirements: Apple’s 7 GB on-device storage requirement and OpenAI’s macOS 14 minimum for the ChatGPT Mac app. Treat claims about superior answer quality, speed or quotas as unverified unless they are backed by a specific current test and its methodology.
Bottom line for Mac users
Start with Apple Intelligence if you want assistance woven into Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground, Genmoji and Shortcuts. Enable the ChatGPT extension when you want ChatGPT’s help in those selected Apple workflows. Install the standalone ChatGPT Mac app when you need a dedicated chat space, screenshot capture or supported context from desktop apps. Check hardware, macOS, language, region, account, history and permissions for the exact workflow you plan to use; those details determine what your Mac can actually do.
