You do not have to choose between every Apple Intelligence feature and none of them. For the strongest reduction, turn off Apple Intelligence from the Apple Intelligence & Siri settings. For a more useful compromise, leave the tools you want enabled and disable summaries, notification prioritization, writing assistance, newer Siri behavior, Journal prompts, or other individual features. Use the Apple Intelligence Report when you want to see which requests were sent to Private Cloud Compute; the report records activity but does not block it.
The controls below apply to current Apple software, but exact labels can change between iOS, iPadOS and macOS releases. Apple’s current guide says iOS 27 Apple Intelligence requires an enabled iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max or iPhone 16 model or later, with availability also varying by language and region.
Choose between a full shutdown and selective controls
Start with the result you want. A full shutdown removes the integrated Apple Intelligence feature set from the device. Selective controls are better if you still want practical tools such as proofreading or photo cleanup but do not want generated summaries, ranked notifications or generative writing features.

Turn off Apple Intelligence completely
On an iPhone, open Settings and select Apple Intelligence & Siri. On releases that place the assistant controls under a Siri heading, use the equivalent Siri settings page. Turn off the main Apple Intelligence control and confirm the change when prompted.

This is the appropriate choice when your goal is to remove the integrated Apple Intelligence experience rather than merely hide its most visible outputs. It affects Apple’s on-device models, Private Cloud Compute features and Apple Intelligence additions presented through apps. It does not uninstall Siri, erase ordinary messages or mail, or remove standard iPhone functions.
If you later decide that one feature is useful, return to the same settings area and enable Apple Intelligence again, then configure the individual switches described below. Every documented toggle is reversible.
Stop generated summaries and notification ranking
Summaries and prioritization are the settings most likely to change what you see without an explicit request. Disable them separately if you want ordinary communications to continue while removing generated text and AI-based ranking.

Messages summaries
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Messages.
- Turn off Summarize Messages.
Messages continue to arrive and remain readable in their normal form. Only the generated summary feature is removed.
Mail message-preview summaries
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Mail.
- Turn off Summarize Message Previews.
This leaves Mail available but stops the generated preview treatment. It is separate from Smart Replies, so review that control as well if you want to remove all AI assistance from Mail.
Notification summaries
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Turn off Summarize Notifications.
Notifications still appear; they are no longer condensed into Apple Intelligence-generated summaries.

Prioritized notifications
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Turn off Prioritize Notifications.
Disabling prioritization prevents Apple Intelligence from ranking notifications as a special priority layer. This setting is independent of notification summaries: turn off both if you want neither generated text nor AI ordering.

Mail Smart Replies
Open Settings > Apps > Mail and turn off Personalize Smart Replies. Mail remains available for reading, composing and sending messages; the personalized reply suggestions are the part that changes.
Voicemail suggestions
Open Settings > Apps > Phone and turn off Suggestions in Voicemail. This targets suggestions associated with voicemail rather than disabling voicemail itself.
Call-screening or call-context display
Open Settings > Apps > Phone > Apple Intelligence & Siri and review Show When Calling. Turn it off if you do not want the Apple Intelligence-related information or suggestions shown during calls. The exact surrounding labels can vary by software release.
Journal writing prompts
Open Settings > Journal and turn off Get Writing Prompts. Journal entries and the Journal app continue to work; this removes the prompt feature.
These switches are useful when your concern is generated content in specific apps. They avoid the broader side effects of disabling Apple Intelligence everywhere, but they do not prevent unrelated Apple Intelligence features that remain enabled.

Keep Siri voice control but remove newer Siri AI behavior
Apple documents a choice between turning Siri AI off and selecting Siri Classic. In Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri, choose the classic assistant option when it is offered, or turn off the newer Siri intelligence control.
Siri Classic does not erase Siri or basic voice-control functions. You can continue using ordinary commands, while newer AI behavior is unavailable. This is the most direct answer to the question, “Can I keep Siri but disable the newer AI features?” It changes the assistant mode rather than disabling voice control altogether.
Use Screen Time to enforce a no-AI policy
Screen Time is useful when a switch should be controlled by a parent, school, employer or device administrator rather than by a casual preference. Open Settings > Screen Time and use the Apple Intelligence-related restriction available on your software version. On managed devices, the administrator may apply the restriction through the organization’s device-management policy.
- Use a Screen Time restriction when the person using the device should not be able to turn the feature back on.
- Use the ordinary Apple Intelligence switches when you are managing your own device and want quick, reversible choices.
- Check the labels after major iOS, iPadOS or macOS updates because Apple can relocate restrictions or rename them.
Screen Time restrictions prevent use of the restricted features. They are different from the Apple Intelligence Report, which only records activity.
See what Apple Intelligence sent to Apple servers
Apple provides an Apple Intelligence Report under Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Intelligence Report. The report is an audit record for requests sent to Private Cloud Compute, not a firewall or permission prompt for each request.
Choose the reporting window
The report offers a Last 15 Minutes view by default, a Last 7 Days option and Off. Select the period that matches the question you are investigating. A short window is useful immediately after trying a feature; seven days gives a broader picture of normal use.

Export the activity file
Choose Export Activity to create Apple_Intelligence_Report.json. The JSON file lets you keep a copy or inspect the requests with a text editor that displays JSON clearly.

A report entry indicates that a request was sent for processing; it does not mean every Apple Intelligence action left the device. Apple says many models run entirely on the device. When a harder request needs additional capacity, Apple says Private Cloud Compute processes only data relevant to that request, returns the result securely and does not retain the processed data. Apple also says independent researchers can inspect the server software. Those are Apple’s stated design and privacy claims, not a substitute for independent testing of every possible request.
Turning the report to Off stops report collection. It does not, by itself, stop Apple Intelligence processing. To reduce or eliminate requests, disable the relevant features or apply a Screen Time restriction.
How Apple describes on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute
Apple states that, in many cases, Apple Intelligence models run entirely on the device so a task can be completed without data leaving it. That is why disabling a cloud-reporting view is not the same as disabling the feature: some work may never have been sent to a server in the first place.
For requests that require more processing, Apple says Private Cloud Compute receives only the data relevant to the request, returns the result securely and does not retain the processed data. Apple’s newsroom also states that, when Private Cloud Compute is used, user data is never stored or shared with Apple and is used only to fulfill the request. Present these statements as Apple’s privacy commitments and architecture description; they are not a guarantee that every Apple Intelligence operation follows the same path.

ChatGPT access through Siri or Writing Tools is optional. It is an extension of Apple Intelligence, not a replacement for Apple’s on-device models or Private Cloud Compute.

Open the ChatGPT control in Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and disable the extension if you do not want supported requests routed to ChatGPT. Doing so prevents that optional service from handling those requests, but Apple’s own models and cloud-processing path remain governed by their separate settings.
Apple says that, when someone uses ChatGPT through Siri or Writing Tools without connecting a ChatGPT account, the user’s IP address is obscured and OpenAI will not store the requests. Connecting an account changes the applicable terms: use is then subject to the data policies that apply to the connected ChatGPT account. Review that distinction before enabling account-linked access.
Check compatibility before troubleshooting a missing setting
Apple Intelligence controls appear only on supported hardware and software. Apple’s current iOS 27 guide lists the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 model or later as compatible iPhone models, with language and region availability varying. The corresponding iPad and Mac support can also depend on the operating-system release and Apple silicon requirements.

Apple originally announced Apple Intelligence rollout with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1, supporting the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max and M1-or-later iPad and Mac models. That announcement describes the historical launch, not the complete current compatibility list. Use the current device guide for a present-day decision.
Verify that the changes produced the result you want
- After changing a switch, trigger the related feature once. For example, check a notification batch after disabling notification summaries or open a new Mail message after disabling Smart Replies.
- Confirm the specific output is gone while the underlying app still works. Messages should still arrive, Mail should still send, voicemail should still function and Siri Classic should still answer ordinary commands.
- If a feature still appears, check for a second control that governs a related behavior. Notification summaries and prioritization are separate; Mail summaries and Smart Replies are separate.
- Review Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Intelligence Report only when you need an activity record. Remember that turning the report off does not disable processing.
- On a family or managed device, check Screen Time restrictions and management policies if a user can re-enable a switch unexpectedly.
If a menu is missing, update the device to a release that supports Apple Intelligence, verify the hardware and language or region requirements, and look for the setting under the current Apple Intelligence & Siri or Siri heading. Apple can change labels and locations across releases, so an older screenshot may not match the current interface.
