Turning off Apple Intelligence features on macOS 27 does not, by itself, remove their downloaded model files. Apple documents controls for Siri and individual features; reclaiming model storage requires a separate, unofficial approach. Start with Apple’s settings and storage check, then consider the trade-offs before using a third-party removal tool.
What turning off Apple Intelligence does—and does not do
Apple’s macOS 27 guide documents controls for Siri and individual Apple Intelligence features, but does not provide a user-facing command to delete downloaded models. Turning features off therefore should not be treated as a way to reclaim their model storage. The RemoveMacAI project says those files can remain on disk after features are disabled.
Apple’s latest platform updates, including macOS 27, began rolling out on September 14, 2026. Availability varies: Apple says, “Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 is not available in all languages or regions.” Apple’s feature-control guide describes the built-in options.

Use the controls for the features you no longer want. These settings change feature access; they do not promise model-file removal or storage recovery.

- Siri: Open System Settings > Siri > Turn Off Siri. Apple also documents turning Siri back on and selecting Siri Classic.
- Messages summaries: In Messages, open Settings and turn off Summarize Messages.
- Mail summaries: In Mail, open Settings > Viewing and turn off Summarize Message Previews.
- Notification summaries: Open System Settings > Notifications > Summarize Notifications and turn off summaries.
- Personalized Mail smart replies: In Mail, open Settings > Composing and turn off Personalize Smart Replies.
- Voicemail suggestions: In Phone, open Settings > Calls and turn off Suggestions in Voicemail.
- Journal prompts: In Journal, open Settings > General and turn off Get Writing Prompts.
Check storage before deciding whether to remove models
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage.
- Note the available space and, if shown, the Apple Intelligence category. The categories and amounts can vary by Mac and software state.
- Review Apple’s recommendations and other storage categories before making changes. Apple’s guide also describes Store in iCloud, which keeps recent iCloud Drive files in full on the Mac while storing most files in iCloud; it is a general storage option, not a way to remove Apple Intelligence models.

Model removal with RemoveMacAI: an unofficial option
RemoveMacAI is an open-source command-line project, not an Apple utility or an Apple-supported cleanup step. Its documentation says the tool applies an Apple configuration profile, turns off features, uses Apple’s asset service to remove model assets, and blocks model redownloads. Those are the project maintainer’s descriptions, not an independent security audit.

The project says its method leaves System Integrity Protection enabled and does not directly modify files under /System. It also documents a revert command that removes the profile and allows models to download again as needed. Consult the project’s current README and support information for the exact command and usage instructions; do not run a command copied from an outdated guide.
Check compatibility before using it
The project lists Apple silicon and macOS 27 as requirements, says it was tested on macOS 27.0, and specifies version 0.2.3 or later for macOS 27.0.1. It lists macOS 26 and earlier as unsupported. Confirm the live README and release notes match your Mac and exact macOS version before proceeding, because the project may change.

Understand what may stop working
Removing the models can affect more than Siri. The project lists Apple Intelligence features and dependent apps or actions that use Apple’s on-device models, including the Foundation Models framework, the Use Model action in Shortcuts, Visual Intelligence, and natural-language editing in Calendar. Its feature list also names Writing Tools, image generation, Genmoji, Spatial Photos, Photos Clean Up, and Xcode code completion. If you rely on any of these, weigh that loss before removing the models.
Allow time for storage to update
The project’s changelog says macOS may take time to delete files after they have been released, and Storage settings may continue to count Apple Intelligence space in the meantime. A delayed change in the storage display does not necessarily mean the removal request failed. Recheck later rather than expecting an immediate increase in available space.

How much disk space can you get back?
There is no Apple-published universal model-storage size or guaranteed recovery amount in the cited documentation. A MacRumors report dated September 23, 2026, recorded 20.67 GB in the Apple Intelligence storage category on one M4 Pro Mac mini running macOS 27. The same report described different measurements on other machines; this single observation is not a typical size or a promise of what another Mac will recover. Read the MacRumors report.
