For a permanent move, change the country or region on your existing Apple Account if you can clear Apple’s requirements. That keeps your purchases, subscriptions, and services associated with one account. Create a second Apple Account only when you need a continuing separate storefront or cannot meet the existing account’s change requirements. A second account is supported in some Apple workflows, but it permanently divides purchase histories and service associations.
Apple now uses Apple Account instead of Apple ID; the older term remains common in searches and device menus. The choice below applies to iPhone, iPad, Apple Vision Pro, Mac, Windows, and Apple’s account website.

Do not treat a second account as a way to bypass regional rules. It is an account-management choice with ongoing switching and sharing consequences.
What changing the country or region actually changes
The country or region is attached to the storefront used for media, apps, subscriptions, and other purchases. Moving the account changes which store and terms apply to that account. It does not mean that every item you previously bought is erased. However, Apple warns that some content might not be available in the new country or region, so availability can differ after the move.

The change also has account-level prerequisites. Apple’s US country-change guidance, current as of October 5, 2026, requires you to deal with financial and transactional blockers before the new storefront can be selected. The destination may require a valid local payment method and billing address.
Prepare the existing account before changing regions
Work through these checks before opening the country selector. Clearing a blocker after you start can require waiting for a billing period or a transaction to finish.
Use any remaining account balance
Spend the balance on the existing account. If only a small amount remains—less than the price of a single item—Apple says you may need Apple Support to clear it rather than buying something that exactly matches the balance.

Cancel subscriptions that block a region change and wait until the paid period ends. Include services billed through the account, not just the subscription you use most often. If cancelling Apple One or iCloud+ is necessary, first check what will happen to your stored iCloud information and make a storage plan before proceeding.
Let pending activity finish
Wait for memberships, pre-orders, rentals, Season Passes, and pending refunds to clear. These are separate from ordinary completed purchases; a completed purchase does not by itself prevent a region change, while an unfinished transaction can.
Check Family Sharing
Family Sharing status can block a change. Review whether you organize or belong to a family group, whether purchase sharing is enabled, and whether other members depend on your subscriptions or purchases. Changing one member’s country can affect access for that member and for people using shared content.
Download content you may need offline
Apple recommends redownloading apps, music, movies, television shows, and books to every device that might later play or read them. This is a precaution against destination-store availability differences; it is not a statement that all prior purchases disappear.
Confirm destination billing details
Have a payment method accepted in the new country or region and a matching billing address available if Apple requests them. If you do not want to enter a payment method, Apple’s guidance is to wait until you are physically in the destination and create a new Apple Account there instead of changing the existing account without payment details.

How to change the country or region on the existing account
Apple provides three routes. Labels can vary slightly by operating-system version, but each route leads to the account’s Country/Region setting.
- On iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro: open Settings, tap your name, choose Media & Purchases, open the account view, then choose Country/Region.
- On a Mac or Windows PC: open the account settings in Apple Music or the Apple TV app and select the country or region option for the signed-in account.
- On the web: sign in at Apple’s account website, open Personal Information, and select Country/Region.
- Choose the destination country or region and review its terms.
- Agree to the new terms when prompted.
- Enter the requested payment information and billing address, then submit the change.
If the selector is unavailable, do not repeatedly retry with different cards. Return to the preparation checklist and look for an unexpired subscription, pending transaction, family status, balance, or payment-address mismatch.
What to expect after an existing-account change
Purchases and media
Your account remains the same account, but the storefront and regional catalog change. Some apps, music, films, television programs, or books may not be offered in the destination. Content already downloaded to a device is why Apple recommends preparing devices before the switch. Do not assume that an item’s listing, update path, or redownload availability will be identical in both regions.

Subscriptions that blocked the change have to end first. If you cancelled a storage plan, verify your iCloud data and available capacity before the plan expires. A country change is therefore best scheduled around renewal dates rather than treated as an instant administrative toggle.
Payment and billing
Future purchases use the destination storefront’s terms and any payment method that Apple accepts there. A card that worked in the old region may not satisfy the new region’s billing requirements.
Choose based on your situation
You have permanently relocated
If your residence, billing address, and day-to-day purchases are now in one country, changing the existing account is generally the cleanest option. You keep one sign-in for purchase history and services, subject to the destination’s catalog and payment rules. Complete the balance, subscription, pending-transaction, Family Sharing, and download checks before changing anything.
You need two storefronts indefinitely
A second account can fit when maintaining separate storefront identities is an intentional, continuing requirement. The benefit is separation: each account remains tied to its own country, purchases, and subscriptions. The cost is administration. You must remember which credentials own an app or media item, and you may need to switch the account used for Media & Purchases to obtain updates or redownloads.

You cannot or do not want to add destination payment details
Apple’s explicit alternative is to wait until you are physically in the new country or region and then create a new Apple Account. This is not the same as changing an existing account without satisfying its requirements. The new account still operates under the destination’s rules, and its purchases do not join the original account’s history.

You are only trying to solve one app or subscription
Creating another account for a single item can create a long-term ownership problem. Before doing so, check whether the item is available through the destination storefront after a normal country change and whether a current subscription, balance, or Family Sharing status is the real blocker. If you do use a second account, record it as the owner of that purchase.
When a second Apple Account makes sense
A second account is reasonable when the separation is intentional and ongoing. Apple specifically identifies it as an option for someone who does not want to enter a payment method while changing regions, provided the person waits until physically in the new country or region before creating the new account.
It can also fit a continuing cross-region need—for example, maintaining a distinct purchase identity for a storefront you still use—provided you accept that the arrangement is not a promise of unrestricted access. Regional licensing, payment rules, Family Sharing rules, and account eligibility still apply.
The cost of separation
- Purchases stay associated with the account that obtained them.
- Subscriptions and media services stay associated with their subscribing account.
- You may need to switch the account used for Media & Purchases when buying or redownloading from the other storefront.
- Family members see the purchases and media subscriptions of the account selected for purchase sharing, not an automatic combination of both accounts.
- Support and recovery become more complex because each account has its own credentials, verification, payment details, and purchase history.
A practical two-account arrangement
Apple allows the account used for iCloud and most device features to differ from the account signed in for Media & Purchases. Keep the account that holds your primary iCloud data and device services in the main account position. Use the other account only where you deliberately need its storefront purchases, and record which account owns each subscription or download.
Before signing out of Media & Purchases, finish any download or update that belongs to that account. Switching does not merge histories, transfer subscriptions, or make a purchase from one account appear in the other.
Family Sharing changes the decision
Family members use their own Apple Accounts. Eligible subscriptions and purchases can be shared, but not every subscription or item qualifies, and some services need additional setup. Purchase Sharing requires family members to be in the same Apple Account country or region.
A member who changes country or region may lose access to purchases shared by other members. Apps shared by relatives can stop working for that member when the country mismatch prevents Purchase Sharing. The account used for purchase sharing determines which account’s purchases and media subscriptions the family can access; changing that designated account can remove access to items associated with the previous one.
Before either option, identify the family organizer, the account currently used for Purchase Sharing, and the country or region recorded for each member. If shared purchases are essential, resolve the family arrangement before changing a storefront.

Can Apple merge two accounts later?
Apple has a purchase-migration feature for eligible accounts, but it is a conditional consolidation path—not a guarantee that two regional storefronts can be combined or retained.
How Apple defines the accounts
In Apple’s migration guidance, the primary account is the one used with iCloud and most iPhone or iPad features. The secondary account is the one signed in for Media & Purchases.
Key eligibility conditions
Both accounts must be set to the same country and region for purchases. Apple also lists requirements involving two-factor authentication, account-sharing status, Family Sharing membership, remaining balance, pending rentals or pre-orders, payment-method verification, a current operating system, and overall account eligibility. Meeting one condition does not guarantee that the migration option will be offered.

What happens after migration
After a successful migration, the secondary account can no longer be used for Media & Purchases. Apple instructs users to sign in with the primary account on their devices. Because the migration guidance reviewed is an Australia-region support page, readers elsewhere should verify the local Apple support instructions and eligibility before planning around it. In particular, do not create two different regional storefronts expecting migration to preserve both.

The account still has a balance
Spend it. If the remainder is too small to use, contact Apple Support for the low-balance case rather than assuming the country selector is broken.
A subscription is active
Cancel the blocking subscription and wait through its paid period. Starting a cancellation does not necessarily end the subscription immediately.
A rental, pre-order, Season Pass, membership, or refund is pending
Wait until the transaction clears. Keep confirmation records for refunds and do not start a second account merely because a pending item is taking time.

Review your organizer or member status and the Purchase Sharing country requirement. Changing or leaving a family can alter access to shared purchases and subscriptions.

The payment method is rejected
Check that the method and billing address belong to the destination region and match the account details Apple requests. If you intentionally do not want to add payment information, use the separate-account route only after you are physically in the destination, as Apple advises.
Important content is unavailable after the switch
Use the copies redownloaded before the change where possible. Regional catalogs can differ, and Apple does not promise that every item will be offered in the new storefront.
A final decision checklist
- Confirm whether the move is permanent or whether you need two storefronts for the long term.
- List every subscription, account balance, pending transaction, rental, pre-order, membership, and refund.
- Check Family Sharing, Purchase Sharing, and the country or region of each dependent family member.
- Download essential apps and media to the devices that must keep using them.
- Verify destination payment and billing requirements—or, if you will not provide payment details, wait until physically there before creating a new account.
- Choose one account for your primary iCloud and device services, and document which account owns any separate purchases.
- Consider migration only after both accounts meet Apple’s same-region and eligibility conditions; never assume it will combine different regional storefronts.
