There is no single best smart display. Choose Apple HomeView for an Apple-first home that wants FaceTime, Apple Home controls and personalized Siri AI; choose Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) for a compact, camera-free-by-published-specifications Google Home display; choose Amazon Echo Show 21 (2024) for the largest screen, Alexa routines, Fire TV and video calls. The right choice follows your existing ecosystem, preferred screen size and camera policy more than a generic feature score.
The short answer
These products target three different rooms and technology ecosystems. HomeView and Nest Hub are both approximately 7-inch displays suited to a counter, bedside table or small desk. Echo Show 21 is a 21-inch, wall-oriented dashboard designed to remain readable across a kitchen or family room. Apple’s model is also the newest: Apple announced it on October 13, 2026, with availability starting November 13, 2026 in selected markets.
For an iPhone household already using Apple Home, HomeView offers the most coherent communication and personalisation package. Nest Hub is the sensible compact option for people invested in Google Home, YouTube, Google Photos and Google Assistant who do not want a camera on the display. Echo Show 21 is the practical choice when a large, glanceable screen, Alexa, built-in Fire TV and video calling matter most.

Apple HomeView: the Apple-first choice
What it does
HomeView combines a shared household display with user-specific content. Apple says it can show Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, Apple News and Apple TV, run compatible third-party apps, display recipes, show feeds from compatible cameras and trigger hands-free automations. FaceTime, Messages, Intercom and Find My cover communication and household coordination.
The device recognizes users by face so content can be personalized while remaining shareable. That distinction matters in a family: one person can see their own media or information without turning the product into a single-user tablet. Apple senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing Greg Joswiak described the design as shared by everyone in the home while feeling personal to each user.
Hardware and audio
Both the countertop and wall-mounted versions have a 7-inch Liquid Retina display and an A18 chip. The countertop version is specified with two full-range drivers and a down-firing woofer, Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos, computational audio and four microphones. AirPlay supports multiroom audio with compatible Apple equipment.

Center Stage is a meaningful advantage if your household already communicates through FaceTime rather than Meet or Alexa calling, but it also means HomeView is not a camera-free product.
Privacy architecture
Apple says camera and microphone processing is isolated with Secure Exclaves. Siri AI can process requests on-device or through Private Cloud Compute. These statements describe Apple’s architecture; they do not by themselves prove that HomeView is more private in every household configuration. You still need to consider which services you enable, who has access to the Apple Home and how a camera is positioned.
Price, launch markets and regional limitation
Apple lists a U.S. price of $299 for both the countertop and wall-mounted models. Preorders began October 13, 2026, with availability beginning November 13 in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. Apple says HomeView is not available for sale in the European Union because Siri AI is currently unavailable in iOS in the EU.

Apple lists Siri AI in English for the United States, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and the United Kingdom. If you live elsewhere, confirm local availability and language support before treating the announced price as a purchase option.
Who should buy it
- Households whose phones, tablets and smart-home accessories are already centered on Apple Home.
- People who use FaceTime, Apple Music, Apple TV or AirPlay and want those services on a shared display.
- Buyers who want countertop and wall-mounted form factors rather than only a small speaker-screen unit.
- Families that value per-user recognition and Apple’s stated on-device or Private Cloud Compute processing model.
Skip HomeView if you specifically need a camera-free display, rely on Google Home or Alexa routines, or live in a market where it is not offered.
Google Nest Hub (2nd gen): the compact camera-free-by-specification option
Display and physical characteristics
Google lists a 7-inch touchscreen with 1024×600 resolution and a weight of 19.7 ounces. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0 and Google Cast connect it to your network, accessories and speakers. Ambient EQ adjusts the display to surrounding light, while an integrated temperature sensor can provide room-temperature information.
No camera listed
Google’s official specifications for Nest Hub (2nd gen) do not list a camera. Google’s comparison material identifies Nest Hub Max—not the second-generation Nest Hub—as the model with a built-in camera for video calls and home monitoring. That makes the smaller Nest Hub the clearest choice here for a buyer who wants a display without a camera according to the published specifications.
The device still has three far-field microphones. A physical microphone-off switch lets you disable voice pickup, so camera-free does not mean sensor-free. If you need a display that can also make video calls, this model is the wrong Google product; its listed hands-free calling support is through Meet without a built-in camera.
Assistant, sensing and media
Google Assistant, Voice Match, ultrasound sensing and Soli Motion Sense provide voice control, user recognition and gesture-aware interactions. Google lists music, shows, YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, Google Photos and compatible smart-home controls. Google Cast and speaker groups let you move media around a compatible home.

Voice Match can tailor responses to recognized household members. As with any voice profile, accuracy and privacy depend on who is enrolled and how your household shares accounts; the specification confirms the capability, not a universal recognition success rate.
Who should buy it
- Google Home households that want a small screen for timers, media, photos and device control.
- People who want YouTube, Netflix, Disney+ and Google Photos in a compact form.
- Buyers who do not want a camera on the display and prefer a physical microphone switch.
- Homes that already use Google Cast, speaker groups or Meet for hands-free calls.
Choose another model if a 21-inch dashboard, FaceTime, a built-in camera or Apple Home integration is central to your plans.
Amazon Echo Show 21 (2024): the large-screen Alexa and Fire TV dashboard
Why the screen changes the use case
Echo Show 21 has a 21-inch Full HD 1080p display, far larger than the approximately 7-inch panels on the other two devices. At that size, widgets, calendars, recipes, camera views and streaming video can remain readable from across a kitchen or living area. Amazon positions it as a wall-oriented display rather than a small bedside smart speaker.

Amazon lists Alexa, built-in Fire TV, Fire OS 7, Wi-Fi 6E and 4GB of RAM. Customizable widgets provide at-a-glance information, while Fire TV supplies the television and streaming interface. The 2024 release year identifies this specific Echo Show 21 generation; it should not be confused with smaller Echo Show models.
Camera and calls
A 13MP camera supports video calling with 3.3× zoom and a wide field of view. That combination is useful when several people stand in front of a wall-mounted display, but it rules out Echo Show 21 for a camera-free household. Confirm where the camera points and use the device’s available privacy controls before mounting it in a high-traffic room.
Who should buy it
- Households that want the biggest screen for recipes, family calendars, widgets or shared information.
- Alexa users who already depend on routines and compatible smart-home accessories.
- People who want Fire TV integrated into the same wall display used for calls and home controls.
- Families that need a wide field of view for video calls rather than a compact personal screen.
Do not choose it for a bedside table or a camera-free requirement. Its size also demands a suitable wall location and viewing distance; the published specifications do not establish installation details for your particular wall.

Compare the ecosystems before comparing hardware
Apple Home and Siri AI
HomeView makes the most sense when your accessories, media subscriptions and communication already live in Apple’s ecosystem. Apple Home controls, camera feeds, Intercom, Find My and AirPlay are useful precisely because they connect to services you already use. Moving to HomeView solely for its display while keeping a Google Home or Alexa setup would create duplicated routines and accounts.

Nest Hub is strongest when Google Home is already the control layer for lights, cameras, thermostats and routines. Google Photos, YouTube and Cast add value to a small screen, and Voice Match can separate household responses. Check each accessory’s compatibility rather than assuming that a device controlled by one assistant will expose every function in another.
Alexa and Fire TV
Echo Show 21 is the integrated choice for Alexa routines and Fire TV. Its widgets and large panel favor shared household information, while the camera and calling features favor family communication. If your household has no Alexa devices or Fire TV content, the large screen alone may not justify changing ecosystems.

Use the table as a selection filter. For a strict no-camera requirement, Nest Hub (2nd gen) is the only candidate whose official specifications do not list one. For FaceTime, HomeView is the relevant choice. For wide-angle group calls on a large wall display, Echo Show 21 has the listed zoom and field-of-view features.

Small, personal surfaces
A 7-inch screen is easier to place beside a bed, on a kitchen counter or at a desk. HomeView offers both countertop and wall-mounted designs, while Nest Hub is the compact Google unit. These sizes work for timers, music controls, photos and close-range interaction without dedicating a wall.
Shared, across-the-room information
The 21-inch Echo Show 21 is in a different class. Its 1080p panel is intended to be seen from farther away and to host widgets, video and Fire TV content for several people. Measure the intended wall, account for power access and consider sight lines before purchasing; a large display can be less convenient if viewers must stand directly in front of it.

Calling and communication
Choose the calling platform your contacts already use. HomeView centers on FaceTime and adds Messages and Intercom for Apple households. Nest Hub supports hands-free calls with Meet, but its published specifications do not list a camera, so it is not a two-way video device in the same way as the other two. Echo Show 21 provides video calling through its 13MP camera, 3.3× zoom and wide field of view.
These capabilities are not interchangeable. A household that mostly calls iPhone users may find FaceTime access more important than screen size; a Google-focused family may value Meet and Google contacts; an Alexa household may prefer the Echo interface and its large shared view.

Before buying, inventory your most-used accessories and routines. The assistant can often control a broad range of devices, but individual features—such as viewing a camera feed, changing a setting or launching a service—depend on compatibility and account permissions.

Apple has published a clear U.S. price: $299 for either HomeView design. That is an announced price, not a temporary promotion, and availability begins November 13, 2026 in the six listed markets. As of October 17, 2026, that release date is still in the future.
The official Google and Amazon specification material cited for this comparison does not establish current retail prices or discounts for Nest Hub (2nd gen) or Echo Show 21 (2024). Check the live listing for your country, storage or bundle configuration, shipping and return terms immediately before purchase. Do not infer a current street price from an old launch offer.
A practical selection process
- List your existing ecosystem. Write down whether your routines and accessories are managed in Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa. Select the matching platform unless you have a specific reason to migrate.
- Decide whether a camera is acceptable. Reject HomeView and Echo Show 21 if you require a camera-free display. Nest Hub (2nd gen) has no camera listed in Google’s specifications, but it still includes microphones and sensing hardware.
- Measure the viewing location. Choose a 7-inch-class device for a counter or bedside surface. Choose the 21-inch Echo Show 21 only when a wall-sized, across-the-room display is useful.
- Match your calling service. FaceTime points to HomeView, Meet to Nest Hub, and Alexa video calling to Echo Show 21.
- Match your media library. Apple services favor HomeView, Google video and photos favor Nest Hub, and Fire TV favors Echo Show 21.
- Verify regional support and price. Confirm Siri AI language and market eligibility for HomeView, then check current local pricing and availability for all three.
Common mismatches to avoid
- Buying by screen size alone: Echo Show 21’s large panel does not replace Apple Home or Google Home compatibility.
- Assuming “smart display” means video calling: Nest Hub (2nd gen) has no camera listed, so its Meet support is hands-free calling rather than camera-equipped calling.
- Confusing product generations: Google’s camera-equipped comparison model is Nest Hub Max, not Nest Hub (2nd gen); Echo Show 21 is the 2024 model.
- Ignoring the regional HomeView limitation: Apple says the device is not sold in the European Union at launch because Siri AI is unavailable in iOS there.
- Treating announced specifications as a performance test: Published features do not establish comparative audio quality, reliability, response time or long-term support.
- Forgetting installation: A wall-oriented 21-inch display needs an appropriate location and power route, while a countertop model must fit the available depth and viewing angle.
Which one should you buy?
Choose Apple HomeView when
Your household is Apple-first, uses FaceTime and Apple media, wants Apple Home controls and accepts a built-in camera. The $299 U.S. price applies to both listed designs, but you must be in a launch market and, where relevant, use a supported Siri AI language.
Choose Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) when
You want the smallest display in this comparison, already use Google Home and Google services, and prefer a design whose official specifications do not list a camera. Its microphone switch, Voice Match, Motion Sense and Google Cast support suit a compact information and control station.
