Apple HomeView is the best fit for households already invested in iPhone, Apple Home, Apple Music and FaceTime. Amazon’s Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) remains the more established all-purpose Alexa display, while Google’s Nest Hub (2nd Gen) is the privacy-friendlier, camera-free choice for Google services and Gemini.
HomeView costs $299 in the United States, opened pre-orders on October 13, 2026, and is scheduled to launch November 13 in Apple’s listed markets. It is not currently sold in the European Union because Siri AI is unavailable there.

What Apple HomeView does
HomeView is a shared household display with a 7-inch Liquid Retina screen, Siri AI, a tilting aluminum tabletop enclosure and a separate wall-mounted model. The tabletop version comes in four colors; the wall model is offered in silver or space gray. The hinge is stainless steel.

Apple says HomeView recognizes up to six people. Each recognized person can receive a personal Home Screen instead of seeing only a generic household dashboard. A compatible iPhone or iPad is required for setup and for personal-context actions. With an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad, Siri can draw on information from Messages, Calendar and Apple Music.
Apple describes the product as “designed to be shared by everyone in the home yet feel completely personal to each user.” In practice, that makes identity the central difference between HomeView and a conventional always-shared smart display.
Home control and cameras
The Home dashboard controls compatible lights, thermostats, locks, blinds and cameras. HomeView supports Apple Home Collection devices, Works with Apple Home accessories and Matter products. The Home Camera face can display up to nine camera feeds at once.
Recommended Free Tools
HomeView also supports FaceTime, Center Stage and Intercom, plus Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, Apple News, Apple TV and compatible third-party apps. Apple says it can turn recipes into step-by-step cooking instructions and run hands-free timers, positioning it as a “perfect sous chef.”

Smart-home ecosystem is the deciding factor
Choose HomeView for Apple continuity
HomeView makes the most sense when your household already uses iPhone, Apple Home, Apple Music and FaceTime. The paired phone or tablet is not optional for setup, and it supplies the personal context that lets Siri answer using your messages, calendar and music information.
Its Apple Home and Matter support covers the core categories most people expect from a central panel: lighting, climate control, locks, blinds and cameras. The advantage is continuity across Apple devices rather than the largest possible accessory-radio list.
Choose Echo Show 8 for Alexa, Thread and Zigbee breadth
Tom’s Guide names the Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) its best overall smart display. Its 8.7-inch screen is the largest of these three, and its 13MP camera, Omnisense presence sensing, Alexa+, Matter, Thread and Zigbee support make it the broadest choice for an Alexa-centered home.
The trade-offs are privacy-related and practical: the device has no physical camera privacy shutter, and Tom’s Guide says it cannot serve as an eero Wi-Fi satellite.

Choose Nest Hub for Google services without a camera
Tom’s Guide names the Nest Hub (2nd Gen) its best Google smart-home display. It has no camera, uses Google Assistant/Gemini interaction, supports YouTube and Google programs, and includes Soli sensing and sleep-tracking capability. Its hardware dates to 2021, but Google has continued focusing on software updates, including Gemini. It is positioned as the budget-friendly option, although a current price is not established here.
Privacy and personal information
HomeView’s privacy model is built around identity and local separation. Apple says Secure Exclaves isolate camera and microphone processing. It also says Private Cloud Compute requests are not stored or accessible to Apple.
Personal Messages and Calendar content appears only when the enrolled face is recognized and the paired iPhone or iPad is present and has recently been unlocked. These are Apple’s architectural and policy claims; no independent security audit is established in the available coverage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNest Hub has the simplest camera decision because it has no camera at all. Echo Show 8 includes a 13MP camera and presence sensing, but no physical shutter, so privacy depends on software controls and how comfortable you are with a camera-equipped display in the room.

Kitchen, communication and everyday use
HomeView is designed to function as a household control surface rather than only a voice assistant. You can open a personal Home Screen, control accessories, view up to nine camera feeds, start an Intercom conversation or use FaceTime with Center Stage. Recipe guidance and hands-free timers give it a specific kitchen advantage, especially for Apple households already using Apple services.
Echo Show 8 is the safer choice if your routines, cameras and accessories already run through Alexa, Thread or Zigbee. Nest Hub is better when YouTube, Google information services and a camera-free design matter more than FaceTime or a broad calling feature set.

Mounting hardware adds to the system cost. Apple lists a $59.95 USB-C wall connector, a $79.95 AC wired mount and a $129.95 PoE wired mount. The PoE option is planned for early 2027, so it is not a launch-day accessory.
Setup requirements and identity limits
Before buying HomeView, confirm that the household has a compatible iPhone or iPad. That device is required for setup, and personal-context actions require it to be present and recently unlocked when the recognized person requests private Messages or Calendar information.
HomeView supports up to six recognized household users. If you need a display that remains entirely camera-free, Nest Hub is the clear fit; if you want camera-based calls and presence awareness, Echo Show 8 offers those capabilities.

HomeView does not yet have independent long-term home testing in the available coverage. TechRadar reported hands-on time in Apple’s demo space and said it was not enough for a full review; the reviewer had not tested the device in a home. Tom’s Guide has an established smart-display testing methodology, but its HomeView entry says to wait until testing and reviewing are complete.
That means HomeView’s integration, availability and stated privacy architecture can be assessed now, but durability, microphone behavior in a busy room, sustained display performance and real-world Siri reliability still lack published independent results.
Which display should you buy?
- Buy Apple HomeView if your household uses iPhone and Apple Home, wants FaceTime and Apple media, values personal Home Screens for up to six people, and accepts the $299 price plus any mount.
- Buy Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) if Alexa routines, camera-based calling, Matter, Thread and Zigbee compatibility are more important than a physical camera shutter.
- Buy Nest Hub (2nd Gen) if you want Google services, Gemini interaction, YouTube, sleep tracking and a camera-free display.
The practical decision is therefore less about screen size than ecosystem, identity and privacy posture. HomeView is a compelling Apple household hub, but Echo Show 8 remains the more mature general-purpose Alexa option and Nest Hub remains the simplest camera-free Google choice.
