Apple HomeView is the simpler option, not the more capable one. Announced on 13 October 2026, it combines a 7-inch smart display, Siri AI, FaceTime, entertainment, and Apple Home controls in one appliance. It should suit Apple-centered households that want a polished shared screen with little configuration. Home Assistant remains the better choice for broad device support, local control, and deeply customized automations.

What Apple HomeView is

HomeView is a tabletop or wall-mounted smart-home display built around Apple silicon. It has a 7-inch Liquid Retina screen with True Tone and adaptive brightness from 500 nits down to 0.3 nits, a domed speaker base, and a tilt hinge. The A18-based device accepts touch and voice commands through Siri AI.

Apple says HomeView is designed for up to six people. Each enrolled household member can have a personalized Home Screen. Sensitive personal information is displayed only when the enrolled face is recognized and a paired, recently unlocked iPhone or iPad is nearby.

What HomeView can control

Smart-home devices

HomeView works with Apple Home and Matter accessories. From its dashboard, you can view supported camera feeds, adjust thermostats and lights, lock doors, close blinds, and trigger hands-free automations. Siri AI can accept spoken requests, while the touchscreen provides a visual alternative.

The Home Camera face can display up to nine feeds simultaneously. With compatible cameras and a supported iCloud+ subscription, Apple says encrypted recognition can identify people, familiar faces, pets, packages, and vehicles.

HomeView versus Home Assistant

The two products solve different problems. HomeView is a finished Apple appliance. Home Assistant is free, open-source software that runs on hardware you own, such as a dedicated hub or computer.

Decision point Apple HomeView Home Assistant
Setup and daily use Purpose-built screen, speakers, Siri AI, FaceTime, and household profiles in one device Runs on user-owned hardware; most setup is performed in the user interface, with more configuration exposed
Device ecosystem Apple Home, Matter, Apple Home Collection, and selected third-party accessories and apps Thousands of devices and brands, with local protocols preferred when available
Automation Integrated hands-free automations and accessory controls Visual editor with triggers, conditions, actions, dashboards, blueprints, and optional YAML
Privacy and architecture Apple describes Secure Exclaves, on-device processing or Private Cloud Compute, and face-gated personal content Data stays local and locally connected devices do not require cloud access; optional Cloud adds remote access and voice integrations
Hardware cost model Paid appliance, with mounts sold separately Software is free; you pay for selected hardware, such as Home Assistant Green, and any optional Cloud service

Home Assistant’s visual editor does not require coding for ordinary automations, so the difference is not simply “easy versus command line.” HomeView reduces the number of decisions because the display, microphones, speakers, assistant, user recognition, and Apple Home interface arrive as one product. Home Assistant gives you more choices—and therefore more setup and maintenance responsibility.

Why HomeView can feel easier

An Apple household that already uses compatible iPhones, iPads, cameras, lights, locks, and Matter accessories can concentrate on choosing a location, enrolling household members, and creating scenes. There is no need to separately select a server, dashboard display, voice endpoint, and speaker.

That simplicity is an architectural trade-off. HomeView’s experience is shaped by Apple’s supported accessories and integrations. Home Assistant can combine unusual devices, expose more states and controls, and keep working locally during an internet outage when the relevant device integrations are local.

Which one should you choose?

Choose HomeView if

  • Your household already uses Apple devices and Apple Home.
  • You want a shared screen for cameras, lights, thermostats, locks, blinds, timers, and media.
  • FaceTime, Siri AI, personal profiles, and a finished industrial design matter more than maximum customization.
  • You prefer buying one appliance instead of assembling a hub, display, speakers, and integrations.

Choose Home Assistant if

  • You need support for devices outside Apple’s ecosystem or want the widest choice of brands.
  • Local operation, custom dashboards, automation blueprints, and detailed triggers and conditions are priorities.
  • You want to control the hardware, storage, backups, and software lifecycle yourself.
  • You are willing to spend more time selecting hardware and maintaining integrations.

A possible hybrid

Home Assistant can remain the integration and automation layer while HomeView acts as an Apple-facing display and control surface. The result depends on the specific devices and Apple Home integrations involved; do not assume every Home Assistant feature will appear in HomeView or that every accessory will expose identical controls in both systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check these limitations before buying

  • Regional availability: Apple lists no European Union sales while Siri AI is unavailable in iOS there.
  • Accessory compatibility: HomeView supports Apple Home and Matter, but “Matter” does not guarantee that every device feature will be exposed through Apple Home.
  • Camera recognition: Person, familiar-face, pet, package, and vehicle recognition requires compatible cameras and a supported iCloud+ subscription.
  • Mounting budget: The £299 UK device price excludes the separately priced wall-mount power accessories.
  • Platform scope: HomeView’s appliance-like simplicity comes with less extensibility than Home Assistant’s open platform.

Bottom line

HomeView is the better answer for an Apple household seeking a reliable, attractive shared control screen with Siri AI and communications built in. It does not replace Home Assistant for users who need thousands of integrations, local-first operation, or intricate automations. The right choice is determined less by the number of features than by whether you value a finished appliance or control over the entire smart-home system.
