HomeKit and Matter are not competing versions of the same technology. HomeKit is Apple’s framework and user experience for controlling supported smart-home accessories, while Matter is a cross-platform connectivity standard. Apple Home can use both HomeKit Accessory Protocol (HAP) devices and Matter devices, but a Matter logo alone does not guarantee that Apple Home supports the product category, every advertised feature, or the required radio and hub combination.
HomeKit and Matter are different layers
What HomeKit means
HomeKit is Apple’s smart-home framework. Compatible accessories can be organized in the Apple Home app and controlled through Apple interfaces such as the Home app and Siri. Devices built around Apple’s HomeKit Accessory Protocol (HAP) communicate within that framework.
What Matter means
Matter is an industry connectivity standard designed to let compatible accessories work across supported smart-home platforms. Apple describes Matter as a standard that enables accessories to work together across platforms and gives customers more choice and interoperability. Apple’s developer documentation says, “iOS 16.1 and later includes support for Matter, the smart home connectivity standard that enables a wide variety of accessories to work together, across platforms, and provides more choice and interoperability for customers.” See Apple’s Matter support documentation.

What happens when you use a Matter device with Apple Home
When a Matter accessory is added to Apple Home, the Home app presents the controls that Apple Home supports for that category and model. Siri can also control the accessory where the integration supports it. The manufacturer’s app may still expose additional settings, device-specific modes, energy data, schedules, diagnostics, or firmware controls that do not appear in Apple Home.
Think of the relationship this way:
| Layer | What it does | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Home/HomeKit | Apple’s app, Siri controls, scenes, and coordination for supported accessories | Support for every Matter category or every manufacturer feature |
| Matter | A cross-platform standard for compatible smart-home communication | That a particular Matter product is supported by Apple Home in its exact category or configuration |
| HAP | Apple’s accessory protocol used by HomeKit devices | Interoperability with platforms that do not support HAP |
| Wi-Fi or Thread | The network technology used by the accessory | That your existing Apple hardware can provide every required network function |

Does a Matter logo automatically mean a device works with HomeKit?
No. A Matter logo indicates that the product uses the Matter standard, not that every Matter device category, control, or feature is available in Apple Home. Before buying, verify all of the following for the exact model and hardware revision:
- Apple Home support for the product category.
- The controls Apple Home provides for that model.
- Whether the accessory uses Wi-Fi, Thread, or another specified transport.
- Whether a compatible Apple Home hub or Thread border router is required.
- Whether setup, firmware updates, or advanced functions still require the maker’s app.
Check the supported category
Apple’s Works with Apple Home badge guidelines list Matter categories currently covered by the badge. The list includes air purifiers, blinds and shades, bridges, fans, lights, locks, outlets, robot vacuum cleaners, specified sensor types, switches, and thermostats. This is a screening list, not a promise that every model in a category has identical controls.

- 【Easy Setup, One Control】With Matter, Skip the step of downloading and registering multiple manufacturers' apps every time you buy a new device. Instead, head straight to certified smart home platforms like Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, or AiDot to control all your Matter devices.【TIP】Matter-certified hub or controller (HomePod, Echo Dot, Nest, SmartThings Hub) is required for Apple Home/Alexa/Google Home/SmartThings platforms. Alternatively, the AiDot app can be used without hub
- 【Offline-Ready Control】Once you've set up your Matter-certified devices on your LAN, they'll be able to communicate with each other directly, using the Matter protocol. This means that if your home internet connection goes offline, your Matter-certified devices will still be able to communicate and be controlled within your LAN, without relying on the internet or cloud services.
- 【Remote Control from Anywhere】Use the app to turn electronics on before you arrive home and off after you leave, no matter where you are. Using the smart plug that work with alexa manage your power usage and save money.
- 【Hands-free Voice Control】Control linkind homekit plug using simple voice commands through Apple HomeKit, Siri, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and SmartThings, without the need for physical input such as buttons or switches.
- 【Flexible Scheduling & Timer】Effortlessly reduce energy usage with automatic device shutdown after a set time. For example Chrismas Tree, TV, Lamp, Fan, Humidifier,Blenders, Lightbulbs
If a product is outside the categories Apple identifies for its badge, do not assume that the Matter logo will make it appear as a fully controllable Apple Home accessory. Ask the manufacturer whether the exact model is supported and which Apple Home controls are implemented.
Check feature exposure, not just on/off control
A Matter accessory can be usable in Apple Home while still offering fewer controls there than in its manufacturer’s application. For example, the Apple Home tile may expose basic power, temperature, or lock controls while device-specific calibration, consumable status, custom modes, or diagnostic information remains in the vendor app. The available sources do not establish feature parity between ecosystems, so model-level documentation is essential.
Look for precise Apple Home labeling
Apple’s Works with Apple Home badge is intended to communicate Matter-certified compatibility with Apple Home and Siri. Its guidelines also specify compatibility statements and distinguish products that need Thread infrastructure. Treat the badge and its accompanying model information as more useful evidence than a generic “smart home” or “Matter-ready” claim.

Wi-Fi Matter accessories
A Wi-Fi Matter accessory joins your wireless network during commissioning. The practical checks are the model’s supported Wi-Fi band and the network conditions stated by its manufacturer. Apple’s pairing flow can provision a compatible accessory onto Wi-Fi when the setup process identifies Wi-Fi as the required transport.

Manage Tapo P110M and its connected devices from anywhere with the user-friendly Tapo app.
Thread Matter accessories
Thread is a low-power mesh network used by many small, battery-powered, or always-on smart-home accessories. A Thread Matter accessory cannot simply join an ordinary Wi-Fi network. Apple says Thread-based Matter accessories require a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub.
Apple hardware and Thread border routers
Apple’s support guidance names compatible Apple home-hub examples and notes that some older Apple TV and HomePod configurations need a compatible Thread border router. Hardware generation and software version matter, so check Apple’s current requirements and the accessory packaging before purchase. The relevant support page is Pair and manage your Matter accessories.
Do not infer Thread capability from the presence of a Matter logo. Two Matter products can have different network requirements, and a home that works with a Wi-Fi Matter plug may still lack the infrastructure needed for a Thread sensor or lock.

How to add a Matter accessory to Apple Home
Before you start
- Use an iPhone or iPad running iOS 16.1 or later; Apple states that this is when Matter support was included.
- Install the accessory according to its model-specific instructions and power it on.
- Locate the Matter setup code on the product, packaging, or documentation.
- Confirm whether the accessory is Wi-Fi or Thread and whether your home has the required hub or border-router capability.
- Keep the manufacturer’s current setup instructions available in case the product requires an initial firmware update or account step.
Standard Apple Home pairing
- Open the Home app on the iPhone or iPad.
- Tap the + button, then choose Add Accessory.
- Scan the Matter setup QR code when prompted. If scanning is not possible, enter the numeric setup code supplied with the accessory.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. Apple says iOS can provision the accessory onto Wi-Fi or Thread as appropriate for the device.
- Assign the accessory to a room and give it a clear name that works well with Siri.
- Open the new accessory tile and verify the controls you expected. If a feature is absent, check the model’s Apple Home documentation rather than assuming pairing failed.
Apple documents this flow and the supported pairing options in Pair and manage your Matter accessories.

Adding an accessory already paired elsewhere
Apple documents cross-app Matter pairing. An accessory already commissioned through another ecosystem app can be made available in a Matter-supporting app, subject to your permission and the accessory’s capabilities. In practice, use the accessory maker’s current instructions to expose its Matter commissioning information, then complete the add-accessory flow in Apple Home. Not every device supports the same multi-app functions, so do not assume that an existing setup automatically exposes every control in Apple Home.
What a successful setup looks like
The accessory appears in the selected Apple Home room with a category-appropriate tile. Basic controls should respond from the Home app, and supported Siri commands should address the name you assigned. A missing tile, an unavailable category, or absent controls points to a compatibility, firmware, network, or feature-exposure issue rather than proof that Matter itself is incompatible with Apple Home.

The QR code will not scan
- Use the numeric Matter code if the camera cannot read the printed QR code.
- Confirm that you are using the code for the exact accessory and not a general product-registration code.
- Check the manufacturer’s instructions for a required reset or commissioning mode.
The accessory is Matter but Apple Home rejects it
Recheck the exact model, category, and firmware. Apple Home’s supported category list is narrower than the complete Matter ecosystem, and a product may require a vendor update before commissioning. If the device is a category Apple does not currently support for its Apple Home badge, the Matter logo is not sufficient evidence of compatibility.
A Thread device cannot be found
Confirm that the accessory is actually Thread-based and that your Apple Home hub is Thread-enabled. Apple’s guidance distinguishes newer compatible configurations from some older Apple TV and HomePod setups that need a compatible Thread border router. Verify the exact hardware generation and software requirement in Apple’s current support documentation and on the product packaging.

Pairing succeeds but controls are missing
Compare the controls shown in Apple Home with the model’s Apple Home feature list. Matter certification does not require every manufacturer-specific function to appear in every ecosystem. Continue using the maker’s app for features that it does not expose through Matter or Apple Home.
The accessory works in one ecosystem app but not another
Use the accessory’s documented cross-app or multi-admin process and grant the requested permission. Capabilities differ by product, so an accessory paired to one ecosystem may not make every function available in Apple Home. If the process fails, remove only the pairing the manufacturer instructs you to remove; resetting an accessory can erase its existing configuration.
Security considerations
Apple’s HomeKit security documentation says commands are “sent, end-to-end encrypted and authenticated” from a user’s device to the home hub, then forwarded to the accessory using HAP or Matter. Read the full explanation in HomeKit communication security.
Recommended Free Tools
This describes the protected command path; it does not mean that every security, account, or privacy question is answered by the Matter logo. Keep the accessory firmware, Apple devices, and manufacturer app current according to their respective support instructions, and review what account or cloud service the product requires.
Example: choosing a Matter smart plug for Apple Home
A Matter smart plug is a straightforward physical-product category, but the same checks still apply. Apple’s accessory listings include Matter-enabled products such as Eve Energy (Matter), which confirms that the category exists in Apple’s catalog; it is not a price, seller, endorsement, or guarantee for every regional model. See Apple’s HomeKit-compatible accessory listings and verify the exact listing and model before buying.
For any Matter smart plug, confirm whether it is Wi-Fi or Thread, whether Apple Home exposes energy monitoring as well as switching, whether a hub is required, and whether firmware updates require the maker’s app. If your priority is simple Apple Home control, choose the model whose Apple Home controls are explicitly documented rather than relying only on the Matter logo.
When HomeKit or Matter is the better fit
Choose a HomeKit-focused accessory when
- Your priority is a documented Apple Home and Siri experience.
- The product’s Apple Home controls are clearly listed and match your needs.
- You do not need the accessory to be shared across multiple smart-home platforms.
- The device uses hardware and a network type already supported in your home.
Choose a Matter accessory when
- You want the option of using the accessory with more than one Matter-supporting ecosystem.
- The exact model is in a category Apple Home supports and its required controls are documented.
- You have checked whether it uses Wi-Fi or Thread and already own the necessary infrastructure.
- You accept that advanced functions may remain in the manufacturer’s app.
Do not decide from the logo alone
The safest buying decision comes from matching five facts: exact model, Apple Home category, Apple Home controls, network transport, and hub requirement. Matter can broaden interoperability, but Apple Home compatibility remains a product- and category-level question.
