Choose HomeKit Secure Video when your household already uses Apple Home, wants supported cameras managed in the Home app, and accepts an iCloud+ plan. Choose Ring when you prefer Ring’s dedicated app, need its model-specific battery or wired options, and are willing to subscribe when you want to review saved recordings.

Neither choice is automatically better. The exact doorbell model, wiring, chime, Wi-Fi, camera count, retention period, regional features and service terms determine whether it will work in your house.

How HomeKit Secure Video works

It is a recording service inside Apple Home

Apple describes HomeKit Secure Video as a way to add compatible security cameras to the Home app, record footage and view it remotely. The camera must support the feature; simply seeing a product in Apple’s broader Home accessory list does not prove that it can record with HomeKit Secure Video.

Aqara Doorbell Camera G400 with Chime, Wired/PoE, HomeKit Secure Video,IP65
  • Works with HomeKit Secure Video and All Major Ecosystems: Fully compatible with Apple HomeKit Secure Video (HSV) for encrypted recording, iCloud storage, and real-time notifications directly on Apple devices. Also compatible with Alexa, Google Assistant, and SmartThings. Pro-level compatibility provides more options via RTSP/ONVIF support, NVR integration, and other advanced setups. *Note: To use this device with HomeKit Secure Video, an iCloud+ plan and an Apple home hub are required.
  • 2K HD 165° Head-to-Toe Vision: See everything from packages at your feet to faces at the door. Featuring 2K HD resolution and a 165° ultra-wide field of view with a 3:4 aspect ratio, the G400 doorbell camera provides a vertical perspective that traditional 16:9 cameras miss. Equipped with nearly invisible 940nm infrared LEDs, this doorbell captures bright, high-definition video in total darkness, monitoring discreetly without alerting intruders or disturbing neighbors. *Note: When connected to Apple HomeKit, the resolution is limited to 1200p. This limitation also applies to Aqara Home when both platforms are used simultaneously.
  • Reliable Hardwired Power & Stable Wi-Fi 6: You can utilize the high-efficiency PoE connection or reuse your existing 8–24V AC/DC wiring, simplifying the upgrade path while maintaining stability. Additionally, the Wi-Fi video doorbell supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi 6 and meets WPA3 security standards for reliable and secure connections.
  • Local AI Detections & Custom Replies: Reduce false alarms with local person recognition and zone intrusion, ensuring you're instantly notified when it matters, with no cloud processing required. When someone rings, use custom quick replies or the voice-changing intercom to answer the door safely. Our wired doorbell camera also features visitor face recognition and cloud package identification for total peace of mind.
  • IP65 Weatherproof & Easy Setup: Built to withstand the elements with an IP65 rating for dust and water resistance, it works flawlessly in wind and rain. The package includes a wedge kit for optimal positioning and a plug-in chime for indoor alerts. The smart doorbell supports 24/7 continuous recording directly to a microSD card (up to 512GB, not included). For added peace of mind, all local footage is automatically backed up to your SMB-compatible NAS server, keeping your video safe and secure.

Apple says a home hub analyzes the video on-device to determine whether an event should be recorded to iCloud. Apple also says the footage is end-to-end encrypted and does not count against your iCloud storage allowance. Those are Apple’s product and privacy statements, not an independent security audit.

iCloud+ is required, with camera-count limits

HomeKit Secure Video requires iCloud+. Apple’s current support guidance, accessed October 13, 2026, sets these camera limits:

iCloud+ plan HomeKit Secure Video camera allowance
50 GB One camera
200 GB Up to five cameras
2 TB or higher Unlimited cameras

These are Apple’s camera-count rules, not a comparison of local prices or the overall value of each iCloud+ tier. Apple says the activity history covers the last 10 days. If you need a longer archive, that retention window is a decisive limitation to evaluate before choosing this route.

Compatibility is feature-specific

As of October 13, 2026, Apple’s official compatibility page identifies these doorbells as supporting HomeKit Secure Video:

  • Aqara Smart Video Doorbell G4
  • Logitech Circle View Doorbell
  • LG Video Doorbell Wired

Other doorbells can appear on Apple’s accessory list without the HomeKit Secure Video label. Check the exact product entry and the manufacturer’s current specifications before buying. “Works with Apple Home” is not, by itself, evidence that recordings will be handled by HomeKit Secure Video.

The LG doorbell needs an availability check

Apple announced the LG Video Doorbell Wired on October 13, 2026. Apple’s announcement describes separate visitor and package views, a built-in spotlight, and chime playback through HomeView, HomePod and HomePod mini. It lists a 2.5K front camera and a full-HD bottom camera, and says eligible plans can add Apple Intelligence video descriptions and natural-language search.

The announcement establishes the described features, not current retail stock in every market. Confirm that the model is actually available to buy, that your preferred iCloud+ plan is eligible for the advanced functions, and that its wiring and chime requirements suit your entryway.

How Ring works

The Ring app is the operating center

Ring says its video doorbells require home Wi-Fi, a mobile phone or tablet and the Ring app. The camera sends notifications to the mobile device, and the app provides live video and two-way talk. This is a dedicated Ring workflow rather than an Apple Home recording workflow.

What you can do without a subscription

Ring states that you can watch live video and answer doorbell notifications without a subscription. A compatible subscription is required to save, review and share recorded events. That distinction matters if your main goal is checking a visitor in real time rather than investigating an incident after it happened.

Recording plans and retention

Ring’s subscription support information describes tiers for a single device or all devices at one location, along with higher-tier features and add-ons. Ring says motion-event videos may be stored in the cloud for up to 180 days from the recording date. Actual access, retention and advanced features depend on the selected plan, the doorbell model and the location.

Do not treat 180 days as a universal guarantee for every Ring device or account. Read the current plan terms for your country and model before assuming that a clip will remain available for that entire period.

Regional restrictions can affect advanced features

Ring documents jurisdiction-specific limits for some advanced functions. Its support information identifies Illinois as a restriction area for certain features and lists Illinois, Texas and Portland, Oregon for Familiar Faces. Availability can change with local rules and service updates, so verify the feature in your region rather than relying on a review written for another market.

Battery and hardwired installation are not interchangeable

Ring sells both battery-powered and hardwired doorbells. Ring says a battery model connected to an internal chime remains primarily battery-powered and receives only a trickle charge. That arrangement should not be treated as equivalent to a fully hardwired installation.

For applicable Ring devices, Ring gives transformer guidance of 8–24 V AC, a 40 V maximum and 50/60 Hz. It says intercom systems and DC transformers are incompatible. These figures are general guidance, not permission to wire every model the same way. Check the installation guide for the exact doorbell, identify your existing transformer and chime, and turn off power before doing any electrical work.

Can you use Ring with HomeKit Secure Video?

The cited Apple and Ring support pages do not establish Ring doorbells as HomeKit Secure Video cameras. Ring’s documented setup uses the Ring app, while Apple requires a camera that specifically supports HomeKit Secure Video. Therefore, do not buy a Ring doorbell expecting its recordings to appear in Apple Home’s HomeKit Secure Video history unless the exact model and current manufacturer documentation explicitly confirm that integration.

You may still use Apple devices in a home that has a Ring doorbell, such as viewing notifications on a phone, but that is different from having Apple Home manage the camera’s encrypted HomeKit Secure Video recordings. Treat those as separate service paths when planning your setup.

Match the doorbell to your existing setup

Choose HomeKit Secure Video when Apple Home is already your household interface

  • Your family already uses the Home app on iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple TV.
  • You want compatible cameras consolidated in that interface instead of adding another camera app.
  • You accept iCloud+ and its camera-count rules.
  • Apple’s stated end-to-end encryption and home-hub processing model are priorities.
  • The exact doorbell is listed for HomeKit Secure Video, not merely for Apple Home.

Choose Ring when app-first operation and hardware choice matter more

  • You prefer the Ring app for live video, alerts and two-way talk.
  • You need to choose between battery and hardwired models based on the entrance.
  • You can provide reliable home Wi-Fi and a compatible phone or tablet.
  • You are comfortable paying for a compatible Ring subscription when recorded-event review is important.
  • The selected model’s transformer, chime and regional feature requirements fit your installation.

Use a multi-camera household as the deciding test

Count every camera you intend to place under the same service. Apple’s 50 GB and 200 GB tiers have explicit camera caps, while the 2 TB-and-above tier removes the stated camera-count limit. Ring’s plan structure instead distinguishes one-device coverage from all-device coverage at a location. A household adding several cameras should compare the plan shape, not just the doorbell’s purchase price.

Installation and buying checklist

Before selecting a HomeKit Secure Video doorbell

  1. Verify the feature label. Open Apple’s current accessory compatibility information and confirm that the exact model says HomeKit Secure Video.
  2. Confirm the power method. Use the doorbell manufacturer’s installation guide to determine whether the model needs existing low-voltage wiring, a particular transformer or another power arrangement. Apple’s compatibility list does not establish those details.
  3. Check your iCloud+ tier. Count the cameras that will use HomeKit Secure Video and compare that number with Apple’s allowance for your plan.
  4. Confirm the home hub and network conditions. Apple says the home hub performs the on-device video analysis. Make sure your Home setup includes the required hub and that the camera can be added to the household network as directed by the product guide.
  5. Plan the viewing devices. Decide whether household members will use iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple TV, and verify that everyone who needs access is part of the intended Home configuration.
  6. Check availability. For newly announced hardware such as the LG Video Doorbell Wired, confirm that a current retailer or manufacturer listing shows it is available in your market.

Before selecting a Ring doorbell

  1. Choose battery or hardwired deliberately. Inspect the existing doorbell wiring, chime and transformer before choosing a model. A battery model connected to a chime may only receive a trickle charge.
  2. Check electrical specifications. For models covered by Ring’s general guidance, compare your transformer with the 8–24 V AC, 40 V maximum, 50/60 Hz requirements. Do not use a DC transformer or an incompatible intercom system.
  3. Confirm Wi-Fi at the mounting location. Ring requires home Wi-Fi. Test the signal where the doorbell will be installed, not only beside the router.
  4. Install the Ring app on the intended phone or tablet. Ring’s setup and notification workflow run through that app.
  5. Select the service level before installation. Decide whether live view is sufficient or whether you need saved recordings, sharing and any advanced functions. Match the plan to one device or all devices at the location.
  6. Check regional terms. Verify that features such as Familiar Faces and any other advanced tools are available at your address.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Confusing Apple Home compatibility with HomeKit Secure Video

A doorbell can work with Apple Home without being eligible for HomeKit Secure Video recording. The fix is simple: look for the specific Secure Video designation on the current compatibility entry and on the product documentation.

Comparing subscriptions without comparing retention goals

HomeKit Secure Video provides a 10-day activity history, while Ring describes motion-event storage for up to 180 days under its service terms. Those figures describe different services and should be compared against how long you actually need evidence retained. Neither figure is an independent test result.

Assuming every wired doorbell uses the same transformer

Doorbell wiring is model-specific. Ring’s published voltage guidance applies to applicable devices, and the company separately warns about intercom and DC-transformer incompatibility. Confirm the exact model before connecting conductors or hiring an electrician.

Buying a newly announced model before confirming stock

The LG Video Doorbell Wired announcement provides specifications and feature claims, but an announcement date does not guarantee that the product is available in your country. Check a current listing and installation documentation first.

Ignoring the app your household will actually open

A technically compatible camera is a poor fit if family members will not use its app. Apple Home favors households already organized around Apple devices; Ring favors users who want Ring’s own alert, live-view and talk workflow. Choose the interface that people will reliably check when a notification arrives.

Privacy, cloud use and service dependence

Apple’s stated approach

Apple says HomeKit Secure Video footage is end-to-end encrypted, does not count toward iCloud storage and is analyzed by the home hub. The practical trade-off is dependence on a compatible camera, a supported Home setup and iCloud+. Apple’s statements describe the service design; they do not constitute an independent audit of every component or installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ring’s stated approach

Ring’s cited documentation focuses on the Ring app, cloud recordings and subscription features. Live viewing and notification responses remain available without a subscription, but recorded-event review depends on a compatible plan. Plan, device and regional terms control what is retained and which advanced features are enabled.

When privacy and continuity matter, write down the service assumptions before buying: which account stores video, how long clips remain accessible, what happens if a subscription ends, which devices can view alerts and whether the doorbell still provides the function you need during an internet or service outage.

A practical decision framework

  1. Start with the app. If Apple Home is non-negotiable, shortlist only doorbells with the HomeKit Secure Video label. If the Ring app is acceptable or preferred, continue with Ring models that meet your feature needs.
  2. Check physical compatibility. Determine battery versus hardwired power, transformer voltage, chime behavior, mounting position and Wi-Fi coverage before comparing camera features.
  3. Define your evidence window. Decide whether a 10-day HomeKit history or Ring’s plan-dependent retention is adequate for your household.
  4. Count devices. Apply Apple’s camera caps or Ring’s one-device/all-devices plan structure to every camera you expect to operate.
  5. Verify regional and model terms. Confirm availability, advanced-feature eligibility and current service conditions for your country and exact model.
  6. Choose the service you will keep paying for. A doorbell’s useful life depends on continued access to the app, cloud plan and compatible hardware, not only on its installation day.

For an Apple-centered household with a listed compatible doorbell and an acceptable iCloud+ plan, HomeKit Secure Video is the more coherent setup. For a household that values Ring’s dedicated app, live notifications and flexible battery or wired models, Ring is the more natural choice—provided its subscription and installation requirements fit the home.
