If the Home app shows No Response, first determine whether the fault affects one accessory, every device from one manufacturer, or several manufacturers at once. Then work from the least destructive fixes: turn on Bluetooth, restart the affected accessory, check the manufacturer’s app for firmware updates, and retry after each change. A device on the same Wi-Fi network can usually be controlled locally; control while away from home requires a configured home hub. Do not remove or factory-reset an accessory until those checks fail.

Start by defining the scope of the outage

The scope tells you which part of the HomeKit or Matter path is most likely broken. A single failed light points toward that accessory, its radio connection, or its bridge. Several products from one maker suggest the maker’s bridge or service. Devices from unrelated makers failing together point more strongly to Wi-Fi, the home hub, discovery traffic, or a network-wide setting.

What you see Most useful first branch What it suggests
One accessory says No Response Restart that accessory, then check its manufacturer app Power, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Thread, or the accessory itself
Several accessories from one manufacturer fail Restart that manufacturer’s bridge and inspect its app Bridge, firmware, account, or manufacturer network path
Accessories from multiple manufacturers fail Restart the modem/router, bridges, hubs, accessories, and controller Home network, home hub, mDNS discovery, VPN, or security filtering
Everything works at home but not remotely Check the home-hub requirement and hub availability Remote control path, not necessarily an accessory failure

Apple’s support procedure, published March 9, 2026, uses these same branches. Follow the narrow branch first; restarting an entire home is unnecessary when only one device is affected.

Run the non-destructive checks first

1. Turn on Bluetooth

On the iPhone or iPad you are using to configure or troubleshoot the accessory, enable Bluetooth in Settings. Bluetooth is commonly needed for nearby discovery and commissioning even when the accessory ultimately communicates over Wi-Fi or Thread. After enabling it, return to Home and try the accessory again.

2. Restart the nonresponding accessory

Use the accessory’s normal power control. For a plug-in device, unplug it, wait briefly, and reconnect it; for a battery device, use its documented power procedure. Give it time to boot and reconnect before testing. Avoid pressing a reset pin or holding a pairing button at this stage, because those actions can erase pairing information.

3. Check the manufacturer’s app for firmware

Open the app supplied by the accessory maker and look for a firmware or software update. Install an available update according to that app’s instructions, then retry the accessory in Home. A device that cannot be reached in its own app may need manufacturer-specific support or a reset; a device that works there but not in Home points toward HomeKit/Matter pairing, discovery, bridge, or hub communication.

4. Retry after each change

Test the accessory after every individual step. This identifies the change that restored service and prevents you from applying a destructive reset when a simple restart was enough.

Understand local control, remote control, and the home hub

Local control means your iPhone, iPad, or Mac and the accessory can communicate across the home network. For that path, the controller should be connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the accessories. Guest networks, client-isolation settings, or separate wireless segments can make devices appear offline even when both networks have internet access.

Remote control is different. When you are away from home, Apple requires a configured home hub to relay commands and maintain the home’s connection. Apple states: “To control your accessories remotely, you must set up a home hub.” HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV are examples of devices Apple identifies in its home-hub and Thread diagnostic guidance.

A hub requirement does not mean a new hub will fix every No Response message. If the accessory has no power, lost Wi-Fi, left the Thread network, or has a failed bridge, adding another hub will not repair that underlying fault. Troubleshoot the existing path first, then consider a suitable hub only if remote control is a requirement and your home has none.

Fix one accessory or one manufacturer

Restart the accessory and inspect its own app

After the Bluetooth and firmware checks, confirm whether the accessory responds in its manufacturer app. If it does, the hardware and its immediate network connection are at least reachable; Home may need discovery or pairing recovery. If it does not, follow the maker’s power, network, and reset instructions rather than repeatedly removing it from Home.

Restart a third-party bridge

If the affected products communicate through a bridge, restart that bridge after restarting the accessories it serves. A bridge translates the maker’s protocol to HomeKit or Matter, so a bridge outage can make every product behind it show No Response while unrelated accessories continue working. Allow the bridge to finish booting before testing.

Give a Thread accessory time to re-form its network

For a third-party Thread accessory, remove power for five minutes, reconnect it, and wait 10 minutes for the Thread network to stabilise before judging the result. The waiting period matters: Thread devices may need time to select a route through the Thread mesh and for the border router to refresh its network state. Do not interrupt the process by repeatedly cutting power.

Remove and reset only as a last resort

If the accessory still fails in its manufacturer app or remains unavailable after the earlier checks, Apple’s sequence moves to removal and manufacturer-directed reset:

When several manufacturers fail together

A multi-manufacturer outage warrants a coordinated restart because the failure may be in shared infrastructure rather than in each accessory. Use this order so network services are available before controllers and endpoints reconnect:

  1. Restart the modem and router. Wait until the router has fully restored internet and Wi-Fi service.
  2. Restart third-party bridges used by the affected accessories.
  3. Restart every home hub in the home, including HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV units that participate in the home.
  4. Restart the affected accessories.
  5. Restart the iPhone, iPad, or Mac used as the Home controller.
  6. Open Home and test devices from more than one manufacturer.

During this sequence, temporarily check whether a VPN or third-party security product is filtering local traffic. Such software can interfere with local discovery or routing even while ordinary web browsing works. Re-enable protection after testing and use its trusted-network or local-device setting rather than leaving security disabled.

Why HomeKit and Matter failures can look identical

The Home app presents a simple status, but several layers can produce the same No Response label. Identifying the transport helps you choose the right recovery action.

Layer Role Typical failure clue Useful action
Bluetooth Nearby discovery and setup for some accessories A newly added or nearby accessory cannot be found Enable Bluetooth and retry close to the accessory
Wi-Fi Connects an accessory directly to the home IP network Accessory disappears after a router, password, or network-segment change Verify the controller and accessory use the same permitted network
Thread Low-power mesh transport for supported accessories A Thread device remains unavailable after power or border-router changes Use the five-minute power disconnect and 10-minute stabilisation wait
Matter Interoperability and application standard that can run over Wi-Fi or Thread Pairing, firmware, or diagnostic behavior differs from a legacy HomeKit device Use the maker’s Matter setup and update instructions
Bridge Translates a manufacturer’s devices to Home Many products from one maker fail together Restart and update the bridge; test the maker’s app
mDNS discovery Lets devices and services find one another on the local IP network Devices have power and internet but Home cannot discover them Check network isolation, VPN/security filtering, and router state
Home hub Provides the home’s remote-control path and participates in diagnostics Remote control fails or several homes services become unavailable Restart all hubs and verify that at least one is available

Apple’s Matter Accessory Best Practices document, Developer Preview 1.5 dated October 7, 2025, describes over-the-air updates, Thread and Wi-Fi network-diagnostic clusters, diagnostic logs, mDNS discovery, and interoperability testing. It defines a Thread Border Router as the device that connects a Thread network to IP networks such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet. This is why a Thread accessory can be powered and healthy yet unreachable if its border-router or IP path is not functioning.

Use the symptom to choose the shortest recovery path

Symptom Do this first Avoid doing first
One device, no other changes Bluetooth, accessory restart, manufacturer-app firmware check Resetting every home hub
One maker’s devices fail Restart and update that maker’s bridge; test its app Replacing the router without checking the bridge
Only a Thread device fails Five-minute power removal, reconnect, 10-minute wait Repeatedly power-cycling during the stabilisation period
Several makers fail locally Full modem/router, bridge, hub, accessory, and controller restart Removing accessories one by one
Local control works, remote control fails Check for a configured and available home hub Factory-resetting working accessories
Accessory fails in its own app Use manufacturer support and its reset instructions Assuming Home is the only fault

Common mistakes that prolong an outage

  • Resetting before diagnosing: A factory reset creates re-pairing work and may remove automations without fixing a router or hub problem.
  • Testing only from outside the home: Remote failure can be a missing hub even when local control is healthy. Test on the home Wi-Fi network first.
  • Ignoring network segmentation: A phone on a guest SSID may have internet access but no permission to discover accessories on the main LAN.
  • Restarting only the phone: The phone is one endpoint. A failed bridge, Thread border router, router, or home hub remains offline until its own restart.
  • Changing multiple variables at once: Sequential checks make it possible to identify the actual cause and undo only the unnecessary change.
  • Leaving VPN or security controls disabled: Use a temporary test, then restore protection and configure an appropriate local-network exception.

Should you add or replace a home hub?

Consider a home hub only after the accessories work locally and your goal is remote access or more consistent home-wide coordination. Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini are relevant hub categories because Apple identifies Apple TV and HomePod-family devices in its home-hub guidance. Choose a device that your current Home setup supports and place it where it can maintain a reliable connection to the home network.

A hub is not a guaranteed cure for an accessory that cannot be reached in its own app, a Thread device still waiting to rejoin its mesh, or a bridge that has failed. Hardware replacement also has a recovery cost: you may need to migrate settings, re-pair devices, or update firmware. Complete the restart and network checks before spending money.

When to contact support

Contact the accessory manufacturer

Use manufacturer support when the product fails in its own app, requires a model-specific reset, reports a firmware error, or cannot complete pairing after removal. Have the model, firmware version, bridge status, and the steps already attempted ready for the support representative.

Contact Apple Support

Contact Apple when several manufacturers remain unavailable after the coordinated restart, when the Home app or home hubs remain unhealthy, or when local control works but the configured hub cannot provide remote access. Explain whether the failure is local, remote, or both; that distinction directs support toward the network, hub, or accessory branch.

Practical recovery checklist

  • Identify whether one accessory, one manufacturer, or several manufacturers are affected.
  • Enable Bluetooth on the controller.
  • Restart the affected accessory.
  • Check the manufacturer app for firmware updates and test there.
  • For a third-party Thread accessory, remove power for five minutes, reconnect it, and wait 10 minutes.
  • For a bridge-related failure, restart the bridge.
  • For a multi-manufacturer failure, restart the modem/router, bridges, all HomePod/HomePod mini/Apple TV hubs, accessories, and the controller.
  • Check VPN and third-party security software for local-network filtering.
  • Verify same-Wi-Fi local control and remember that remote control requires a home hub.
  • Only then remove the accessory, follow its manufacturer reset procedure, and add it again.

This order preserves the most configuration, isolates the failing layer, and reserves factory reset or hardware purchases for cases where the evidence supports them.
