Apple Home supports both Apple’s HomeKit framework and selected Matter-certified accessories, but “Matter” alone is not a guarantee that a product will work fully in Apple Home. Compatibility depends on the exact model, supported accessory category, exposed features, radio (Wi-Fi or Thread), Apple software, and sometimes a home hub or Thread border router.

Before buying, verify the manufacturer’s Apple Home support for the precise model, its CSA Matter certification, network type, and any required Apple hardware. Apple’s category list and setup requirements can change, and availability may differ by country or region.

HomeKit and Matter are different technologies

HomeKit is Apple’s integration framework

HomeKit is Apple’s framework for connecting supported smart-home accessories to Apple platforms, including the Home app and Siri. A HomeKit accessory is designed for Apple’s ecosystem and may use Apple-specific certification and integration requirements.

Matter is a cross-platform standard

Matter is an industry smart-home connectivity standard intended to let compatible accessories work across multiple ecosystems. Apple says Matter support is built into iOS 16.1 and later. A Matter device can potentially be paired with more than one ecosystem, subject to the product’s capabilities and each platform’s support.

Once configured, communication and control between Matter devices can be achieved directly on the local network.
  • 【Matter: Future-Proofing】Matter devices will be compatible with future updates and advancements in technology, ensuring that your smart home system remains up-to-date and compatible with new devices and features.
  • 【Compact & Flame Retardant Design】Avoid blocking additional outlets with its compact design, and plug in your WiFi smart plug with confidence thanks to its UL certified flame retardant design and 2-year limited warranty.
  • 【App & Voice Control】Control your WiFi smart plug from anywhere, anytime via the free Tapo App or just give voice commands to Siri, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or Samsung SmartThings. Your favorite smart assistant enables you to have a truly hands-free experience.

Matter does not replace HomeKit, and Matter branding does not mean every device feature will appear in Apple Home. Apple only supports particular Matter accessory categories and functions. A product may expose different controls in Apple Home than it does in another app.

What currently works with Apple Home

Apple’s Works with Apple Home badge guidance lists these Matter-certified accessory categories for Apple Home:

  • Air purifiers
  • Blinds and shades
  • Bridges
  • Fans
  • Lights
  • Locks
  • Robot vacuum cleaners
  • Sensors, including air-quality, ambient-light, contact, humidity, motion and temperature sensors
  • Switches
  • Thermostats

The category list is a practical boundary, not a promise that every feature of every product is supported. Apple’s iPhone setup instructions also use lights and cameras as examples of accessories that can be added to Home, but that example does not establish that all cameras are Matter accessories or that cameras have the same Matter support as the categories above.

How to interpret compatibility labels

Apple describes its badge as indicating that a Matter-certified accessory is compatible with the Apple Home app and Siri on Apple devices. Eligibility requires CSA Matter certification and interoperability testing. Apple’s process also asks manufacturers to identify the product’s Vendor ID and Product ID.

For a product listing, look for all of the following rather than relying on one logo:

How to add a Matter or HomeKit accessory

The normal starting point is an iPhone running a supported version of iOS and the manufacturer’s setup instructions. Apple’s flow is similar for HomeKit and Matter devices, but Matter devices can also be paired in other ecosystems.

  1. Prepare the accessory. Power it on, put it in pairing mode, and follow the manufacturer’s network instructions. A Wi-Fi device needs access to the appropriate Wi-Fi network. A Thread device needs compatible Thread infrastructure, discussed below.
  2. Open the Home app. Tap the add control, choose Add Accessory, and follow the on-screen prompts.
  3. Scan or enter the setup code. Apple Home may request an Apple Home setup code or a Matter code. Apple says Matter setup codes can contain 11 or 21 digits. Scan the QR code when available, or enter the code manually.
  4. Complete network provisioning. Apple’s Matter documentation describes provisioning the accessory onto Wi-Fi or Thread as appropriate. Keep the phone close to the accessory and do not interrupt power during this step.
  5. Assign the accessory. Select a home and room, give the device a recognizable name, and finish any Siri or automation prompts.

If the device was paired in another app first

A Matter accessory that was initially added to another ecosystem may need a new pairing code before Apple Home can access it. In Home, use More options when offered, then obtain the pairing code from the accessory’s existing app. The manufacturer may call this sharing, commissioning, or adding another administrator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple says Matter pairings are stored in iOS Settings and can be managed there regardless of which app was used to set them up. Apple’s developer documentation also describes adding Matter accessories through Home or another HomeKit-based app, with third-party Matter apps requesting access under the user’s control.

Do you need a HomePod or Apple TV?

There is no single hub rule that safely applies to every Matter accessory and every task. Apple’s current documentation uses different broad descriptions:

  • Apple’s troubleshooting guidance says an iPhone running iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories from Home without a home hub.
  • Apple’s iPhone accessory setup guide says Matter accessories require a home hub.
  • Apple’s home-hub guide says a hub must be set up to add Matter accessories.

Because those statements are not perfectly aligned, check the current instructions for the exact accessory and your iOS version. Separate the need for initial local pairing from the need for remote access, automations and notifications. A configuration that can control a device locally from an iPhone may still need a home hub for other Home features.

What a home hub is used for

Apple Home can use a HomePod, HomePod mini or compatible Apple TV as a home hub. Depending on the accessory and software, a hub may be needed to provide control when you are away from home, run automations while devices are unattended, or support notifications and other Home functions. Apple’s badge guidance also distinguishes local pairing and control from automation, notification and remote-access requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that every Apple TV model has the same role. Verify the exact model, operating-system version and network configuration in Apple’s current hub documentation.

Thread devices have an extra infrastructure requirement

Thread is a low-power mesh networking technology; it is separate from Matter. Matter can run over Wi-Fi or Thread, so a Matter label does not tell you which radio a product uses.

Apple’s compatibility guidance says Thread-based accessories require a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub. Apple names HomePod and Apple TV models in its compatibility statements and notes that some older Apple TV configurations also need a compatible Thread border router. Its setup material identifies Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini and compatible third-party Thread border routers as relevant examples.

Verify the exact Apple TV generation and configuration instead of treating every Apple TV as a Thread border router. Also confirm whether the accessory manufacturer requires a particular border-router arrangement. A Thread device without suitable Thread infrastructure may be discoverable in a product app yet fail to join Apple Home reliably.

Wi-Fi Matter versus Thread Matter

Point to check Wi-Fi Matter accessory Thread Matter accessory
Home network Joins the home Wi-Fi network during setup. Joins a Thread mesh through compatible infrastructure.
Apple hardware May work with local iPhone control, while hub needs depend on software, accessory and desired features. Requires a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub and, for some configurations, a compatible Thread border router.
Buying question Confirm Wi-Fi band, app requirements and Apple Home support for the exact model. Confirm Thread support on the exact HomePod or Apple TV setup and whether a border router is required.
Typical decision Often the simpler choice when the home already has reliable Wi-Fi and no Thread hardware. Useful when you want Thread’s mesh approach, but it adds an infrastructure check before purchase.

These are setup distinctions, not a performance ranking. Apple’s documentation in the supplied material does not provide comparable latency, reliability or range measurements.

How to evaluate a product before buying

Use this checklist for a light, lock, sensor, switch, thermostat, plug or other accessory:

  1. Confirm the exact model. Product families often contain different radios and generations. Search the manufacturer’s specifications for the full model identifier.
  2. Check Apple Home support. Look for explicit Apple Home or Works with Apple Home support, not just a generic Matter logo.
  3. Check the category and feature set. Make sure Apple Home supports the accessory category and the particular controls you need. A Matter device can expose only a subset of its functions in Apple Home.
  4. Identify the radio. Determine whether it is Wi-Fi, Thread or another connection type. For Thread, confirm the required Apple hub or border router.
  5. Check certification evidence. For a Matter product, look for CSA Matter certification and the exact certified model. Apple’s badge process refers to certification, interoperability testing, Vendor ID and Product ID.
  6. Read the setup path. Confirm that the box includes an Apple Home or Matter setup code, and learn how to generate a second pairing code if the device is first added elsewhere.
  7. Check software and hardware requirements. Verify minimum iOS version, compatible HomePod or Apple TV models, and whether a hub is needed for remote control, notifications or automations.

Example: choosing a Matter smart plug

A Matter smart plug is a reasonable Apple Home category to investigate because Apple’s supported list includes switches and sockets in its accessory guidance. The buying decision still turns on the exact model. Confirm its Matter certification, explicit Apple Home support, Wi-Fi or Thread radio, setup-code method and any hub requirement.

A Wi-Fi plug may be the more straightforward physical choice if your home already has suitable Wi-Fi and you only need local control. A Thread plug can be appropriate when your Apple Home installation already has a compatible Thread-enabled hub and border-router arrangement. Do not infer either option’s full feature set from the word “Matter” alone.

Troubleshooting Apple Home compatibility problems

The accessory is not found

  • Confirm the accessory is powered and in pairing mode.
  • Check that the phone is on the intended home network for a Wi-Fi device.
  • Move the phone closer during scanning and provisioning.
  • Verify that the code belongs to the exact accessory and has not already been consumed.
  • For a device paired elsewhere, use Home’s More options flow and request a fresh pairing code from the existing app.

The device pairs but features are missing

Check whether the missing control is supported by Apple Home for that category. Matter interoperability does not require identical feature exposure in every ecosystem. The manufacturer’s app may retain advanced modes that Apple Home does not present.

Remote access or automations do not work

Recheck the hub requirement for your iOS version, accessory and use case. Local iPhone control does not by itself prove that remote access, notifications or automations are configured. Confirm that a compatible HomePod or Apple TV is set up as a home hub and connected to the same Home.

A Thread device cannot connect

Verify that the Home has a Thread-enabled Apple hub and, where required, a compatible Thread border router. Confirm the exact Apple TV model rather than assuming any Apple TV provides Thread routing. If the accessory’s documentation specifies a particular infrastructure arrangement, follow that requirement.

What Matter interoperability does—and does not—promise

Matter can let a supported accessory be shared across ecosystems and gives buyers more platform choice. Apple controls which Matter categories and features its Home app exposes, while manufacturers control the capabilities of each model. Pairing and app access remain under the user’s control; adding a device to one app does not automatically grant every other app access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical rule is simple: treat Matter as a foundation for interoperability, not as a guarantee of identical behavior. Check Apple Home support, certification, feature coverage, network type and Apple hardware requirements for the exact product before purchasing.
