Apple Family Sharing lets an adult organizer invite up to five other people to a group where members keep their own Apple Accounts. From there, eligible subscriptions can be shared, and participating family members can choose to share their locations through Find My. The core features do not require an AirTag or a separate paid tracking app.
What Apple Family Sharing does—and what it does not do
Family Sharing is the group feature that connects eligible subscription sharing, purchase sharing, iCloud+ storage, location sharing, and some child-device controls. These are distinct settings: joining a family group does not mean every subscription is shared or that every member’s location is visible.
One adult sets up the group as organizer and can invite up to five additional people. Each person joins with their own Apple Account rather than sharing one login. How to share an Apple or App Store subscription

On iPhone, open Settings > Family > Subscriptions. Menu wording can vary with software updates; Apple’s linked guide corresponds to iOS 27.

Select the subscription you want to manage and look for Share with Family. Turn it on if the option is available. Some services require sharing to be enabled separately.

If an App Store subscription has no Share with Family control, Apple says that subscription is not eligible for family sharing. Do not assume that every paid app, service, or purchase is shareable.

Check the billing setting before enabling Purchase Sharing. When it is on, shared subscription charges may be billed to the organizer’s default payment method, subject to Apple’s stated exceptions, including when a purchasing member has a valid payment method.

For a missing shared app or item, Apple’s troubleshooting guide covers why family-shared content may not appear: If you can’t find your family’s shared apps and content. Eligibility and available content can depend on the service and region. For a subscription-specific question, verify the service’s sharing details rather than relying on the fact that it is paid.

How to share your location with family

Make sure Location Services is on.

On iPhone, go to Settings > Family > Location Sharing and review the sharing controls.

Each family member can decide whether to share their own location and can stop sharing. Apple says the organizer’s location is automatically shared when location sharing is configured; other members can choose whether to share theirs.

Apple describes Family Sharing as a way to use Find My to share a location automatically with family. That is Apple’s explanation of the feature, not a guarantee that every family member is sharing at all times. Location sharing lets participating people see a shared location. Find My can also help family members locate a missing device. Neither capability requires an AirTag. An AirTag is an optional Find My item tracker for belongings such as keys or a backpack—not a requirement for sharing a person’s location or subscriptions.

What family members can see when iCloud+ storage is shared
Sharing iCloud+ gives the family access to a shared storage capacity and eligible premium features; it does not combine everyone’s personal files into a shared folder. Members continue using their own accounts, and their photos and documents remain private. Apple puts it this way in its iPhone User Guide: “For storage, you only share the space—your photos and documents stay private and everyone keeps using their own accounts.”
Apple’s iCloud User Guide lists these shared iCloud+ storage capacities:
- 50 GB
- 200 GB
- 2 TB
- 6 TB
- 12 TB
