Short answer: Apple is considering Chinese-made DRAM as one possible response to a severe memory shortage, but there is no confirmed company-wide switch, public contract with a named Chinese supplier, or announced list of affected iPhone and Mac models.

Reporting on October 16, 2026 said CEO John Ternus kept all sourcing options open during what he reportedly called an “absolute crisis” in memory supply. Earlier reporting on July 8 said Apple had started testing Chinese memory chips. Those developments indicate contingency planning and qualification work—not a finalized change to every device Apple sells.

What John Ternus reportedly said

Seoul Economic Daily reported on October 16 that Ternus discussed Chinese-made memory in a TIME interview and did not rule out using it in iPhones or Macs. The report characterized his description of the memory situation as an “absolute crisis” and said all options remained available.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Ternus became Apple CEO in September 2026, after Tim Cook’s transition. The sourcing discussion is therefore part of his first major product cycle as chief executive, but it is not evidence by itself that Apple has approved a production change.

What Apple has already been reported to do

Testing Chinese memory chips

MacRumors reported on July 8, 2026 that Apple had begun testing Chinese memory chips. That report linked the testing to the DRAM squeeze and described a possible strategy in which devices sold in China could be supplied through a China-focused route. It did not establish a global rollout or identify a production model using the chips.

Explaining the shortage to investors

Apple’s Q3 fiscal 2026 earnings-call transcript said that “primarily the DRAM market has three suppliers.” The same discussion attributed unexpectedly strong demand to the pressure, saying iPhone and Mac demand was doing “remarkably better than we thought they would do.” These statements connect the problem to both limited industry capacity and demand that exceeded Apple’s planning assumptions.

Why another DRAM source matters

DRAM is the working memory used while a device runs apps, operating-system tasks and other active processes. Apple normally qualifies components against demanding performance, reliability, security and manufacturing requirements. During a supply crunch, adding a qualified source can reduce the chance that one supplier’s allocation limits production.

Chinese sourcing could therefore provide additional capacity, but qualification is the critical step between laboratory testing and shipping products. Apple would need to establish that a component performs consistently across production lots, firmware and thermal conditions, and that its supply can be controlled for the markets in which the component is used.

How the sourcing decision could be evaluated

Decision factor What the current reporting establishes What remains open
Supply resilience Apple is facing a constrained DRAM market with three primary suppliers, according to its fiscal 2026 earnings-call transcript. Whether Chinese capacity would materially increase Apple’s allocation has not been disclosed.
Quality and qualification Apple was reported to be testing Chinese memory chips in July 2026. No source confirms that testing has finished or that production approval has been granted.
Geopolitical and regulatory exposure A China-market routing strategy was discussed in connection with the testing report. No source identifies the export-control, security or policy conditions Apple would apply by market.
Market allocation Chinese-made memory has been discussed as a possible option for Apple devices. No model list, launch date or geographic allocation has been announced.

What this could mean for iPhone and Mac buyers

Reliability

A different memory supplier would not automatically make an iPhone or Mac less reliable. The relevant question is whether Apple completes its production qualification and maintains the same validation standards. Testing alone does not show how a finished device will perform over years of use.

Pricing

No cited report establishes a component-cost saving, retail-price change or surcharge. Apple could use additional supply to protect production volumes, but the available evidence does not support a prediction about the price of any iPhone or Mac.

Availability

If Apple qualifies another source, it could reduce dependence on constrained allocations and help keep devices in production when demand is stronger than forecast. That benefit would depend on usable capacity, factory output and the markets where the memory is approved.

Specifications and disclosures

Apple has not announced a consumer-facing specification change tied to Chinese DRAM. Buyers should not assume that every unit of a particular iPhone or Mac will use the same memory supplier unless Apple publishes a model-specific disclosure or an authoritative teardown identifies a component.

What has not been confirmed

  • No cited source confirms a signed purchase agreement with a named Chinese DRAM manufacturer.
  • No cited source confirms that all iPhones or Macs will use Chinese-made memory.
  • No launch date, affected model list or regional rollout has been announced.
  • No evidence establishes a retail-price change or a change to Apple’s advertised memory specifications.
  • The precise wording of the reported TIME interview should be checked before any phrase attributed directly to Ternus is quoted.

How to interpret the next announcement

  1. Look for a production statement: Apple would need to identify whether testing has become qualification for shipping products.
  2. Check the scope: A China-only allocation, a limited product family and a global component change would have very different implications.
  3. Separate supply news from product news: A supplier decision may protect manufacturing without changing the memory capacity listed for customers.
  4. Watch for evidence of a contract: A named supplier, purchase agreement or regulatory filing would be stronger evidence than statements that all options remain open.

For now, the defensible conclusion is that Apple is keeping Chinese DRAM available as a contingency while the company manages an unusually tight market and stronger-than-expected iPhone and Mac demand.
