Apple Arcade is usually the better fit if you want to play several games in its catalog, avoid ads and additional in-app purchases, or share access with family. Buying games individually is a better fit when you have a short list of specific titles and do not expect to use the catalog. There is no universal savings threshold: compare the local subscription price over the time you expect to play with the current prices of the games you actually want.
What you get with Apple Arcade
Apple Arcade is a subscription that gives access to its available game catalog while the subscription is active; it is not a purchase of every game for permanent ownership. Apple says the catalog contains more than 200 games and can be shared with up to six people through Family Sharing. - You want a few particular titles and they are not in the current Arcade catalog.
- You prefer to pay for those games rather than keep a subscription active to access a catalog.
- You do not expect to try enough other included games for the catalog access to matter to you.

How to compare the cost fairly
- List the games you expect to play. Include only titles you would realistically download, not every game that looks interesting.
- Check where each title is available. Search the current Arcade catalog and the listings in your local App Store. Catalog membership, device support and regional availability can vary.
- Compare over your likely play period. Add the individual prices for the games on your list, then compare that total with the local Arcade subscription price for the same period. Include a trial only if it is available to you and you plan to use it.
- Adjust for household use. If several people in your household will play, account for Family Sharing access for up to six people, as well as how many of them are likely to use it.
- Consider the play experience. Value the absence of ads and additional in-app purchases if that matters to you. For individual games, inspect each listing rather than assuming they all use the same monetization model.
This comparison avoids a misleading break-even rule: the result depends on your region’s subscription price, the specific games you want, and how long you plan to play.
Family sharing, devices and controllers
Apple says an Arcade subscription can be shared with a family of up to six through Family Sharing. Individual game purchases are also available without Arcade, but do not assume that every title has identical sharing terms; check its listing and Apple’s support information. You can play Arcade games on iPhone and iPad, but compatibility is title-specific. Apple notes that Arcade Originals and App Store Greats may have different supported-device lists; verify the game’s listing for your hardware, software and region.
