Apple Arcade is the better fit if you expect to play several games, want one predictable subscription, prefer Apple’s stated no-ads-and-no-in-app-purchases Arcade experience, or will share with family. Buying games individually is usually the cleaner choice when you have a short list of specific titles and want access governed by each purchase rather than by an ongoing Arcade subscription. The right answer depends on the actual games, prices shown in your storefront, devices, and how long you will play—not on an invented average price for an indie game.
Apple Arcade and individual purchases at a glance
| Question | Apple Arcade | Buying games individually |
|---|---|---|
| What you pay for | Access to the available Arcade catalog while the subscription is active. | A separate transaction for each game listed for purchase. |
| Catalog size | Apple describes the service as unlimited access to hundreds of premium games. | Only the titles you select; availability and price are title-specific. |
| Ads and in-app purchases | Apple says Arcade games have no ads or in-app purchases. | Check every listing; business models differ by title. |
| After you stop paying | Arcade games cannot be played after cancellation, even if they remain downloaded. | The transaction is separate from Arcade; access follows the individual title’s listing and applicable store terms. |
| Family use | Apple says the subscription can be shared with up to five family members at no additional cost. | Do not assume identical sharing treatment for every purchase; check the applicable settings and terms. |
| Devices | Apple lists iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV 4K and Apple Vision Pro, subject to game compatibility. | Compatibility is shown on each game’s listing and can differ by title. |
“Indie game” describes how a game is made or published, not a single App Store pricing model. Some independent games may be in Arcade, some may be sold separately, and some may use ads or optional purchases. Compare the exact listings you intend to use.
What an Apple Arcade subscription actually provides
Access to a catalog, not ownership of every game
Apple describes Arcade as a game subscription service with unlimited access to hundreds of premium games. After subscribing, you can download available Arcade games without an additional charge for each download. That is catalog access: you are paying for the service during the subscription period, not purchasing every title in the catalog as a permanent collection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe catalog can change, and the cited Apple pages do not establish that every Arcade title is also available for separate purchase. If a particular game matters to you, open its current listing and look for the purchase option available in your region. Do not subscribe on the assumption that you can later buy any Arcade game outright.

A single recurring payment
For a U.S. storefront, Apple currently lists Apple Arcade at $6.99 per month or $49.99 per year. Those are listed rates, not a worldwide price guarantee; Apple says prices and availability vary by country or region. Promotions, eligible-device offers and Apple One bundle terms can also change, so verify the offer displayed on your account before relying on it.
The stated monetization experience
Apple says Arcade games have no ads or in-app purchases. That gives the service a consistent expectation while you are choosing among Arcade titles. The statement applies to Arcade games; it should not be extended to individually purchased games as a group. A separately sold game may be premium, ad-supported, or built around optional purchases, so inspect its current listing and in-game description.
Apple Arcade pricing: monthly, annual and household math
| Billing option | Listed U.S. price | What it means over 12 months |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $6.99 per month | $83.88 if billed for 12 months at that listed rate. |
| Annual | $49.99 per year | $49.99 for one listed year. |
| Difference | Annual versus twelve monthly payments | The listed annual plan is $34.88 less than twelve monthly payments. |
The comparison is arithmetic on Apple’s displayed U.S. rates. Your local currency, taxes, promotions and storefront can produce a different result. The annual plan also assumes you will keep using Arcade for the year; a month-to-month plan can cost more per year but lets you stop sooner if your interest is temporary.

Family-sharing value
Apple says one Arcade subscription can be shared with up to five family members at no additional cost, for as many as six people in the family group. If all six people use the service and the listed annual price applies, the simple arithmetic is about $8.33 per person for the year; at the listed monthly rate it is about $1.17 per person per month. That is an illustration of household allocation, not a promise that every member will play enough to justify the subscription.
Family Sharing can change the decision more than the number of games one person expects to play. Conversely, a solo player should evaluate the full subscription price against their own play list rather than dividing it by unused family slots.

What buying indie games one at a time changes
You choose the titles instead of renting a catalog
Buying separately starts with a specific game listing in the App Store or Apple Games app. You pay the amount shown for that title, then evaluate it under the store’s purchase and access rules. The sourced Apple pages do not establish a typical price for indie games, and prices vary too widely by title to support a reliable universal break-even number.
Use the actual prices shown for the games you want. If your list contains two inexpensive games, a subscription may be unnecessary. If it contains many games that are all currently in Arcade, the subscription may provide more access for the period you intend to play. The arithmetic must use your list, not an assumed average.

A separately purchased game can have a different commercial model from an Arcade game. Before paying, read the listing for ads, in-app purchases, required online features, controller support, age rating and device compatibility. A purchase price does not by itself prove that a game has no additional purchases or advertising.
Availability is not symmetrical
Apple Support says people who do not subscribe can still buy and download other games through the Apple Games app or App Store. The cited support material does not say that every Arcade title can also be bought separately. Check the exact game page rather than treating Arcade and the regular App Store as interchangeable inventories.
The access question: what happens when payment stops?
Apple Support states that after you cancel Arcade, Arcade games cannot be played even if they are still downloaded on your device. Downloading a game is therefore not a way to preserve access after the subscription ends.

A separately purchased game is a distinct transaction rather than an Arcade entitlement. Its future access is governed by that title’s listing and the applicable store terms, so review those terms for the game you are considering. This difference matters if you expect to take a long break, cancel subscriptions between releases, or keep returning to one favorite game years later.
Devices, offline play and controllers
Supported Apple platforms
Apple says Arcade games can be played online or offline and lists iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV 4K and Apple Vision Pro. Those are service-level platforms, not a guarantee that every game runs on every one of them. A game may support only a subset of the listed devices, or require a particular operating-system version.
For an individual purchase, the game’s own listing is the authority for compatible devices. Make this check before comparing prices: a cheap game that cannot run on your intended device is not a practical alternative.
Controller support
Apple says a controller can be connected and that many Arcade games support one. A controller is optional, not a requirement for the subscription. On an individual game’s App Store page, look for the controller icon to confirm support for that title. If you plan to play on Apple TV 4K, Mac or a television-connected setup, verify controller support before buying rather than assuming that the service-level statement applies to every game.
Offline expectations
Apple’s Arcade description explicitly includes online and offline play. You still need to download the game and meet any title-specific requirements before going offline. For separately purchased games, offline behavior should be checked in the listing or the developer’s current documentation; do not infer it solely from the fact that the game is paid.

A decision framework based on the games you will actually play
1. Make a named game list
Write down the exact titles you expect to play during the next month or year. Mark whether each title is currently shown as an Arcade game, a separate purchase, or unavailable in your storefront. This prevents a broad catalog claim from deciding a question that is really about three specific games.
2. Check the price and business model for every separate title
Open each listing in the App Store or Apple Games app. Record the displayed purchase price, whether ads or in-app purchases are mentioned, supported devices, controller information and any region-specific limitation. Individual prices were not established by Apple’s cited service pages, so use the live listing rather than a remembered price or a third-party average.
3. Choose your time horizon
For a short burst, compare the monthly Arcade rate with the total of the individual games you would buy immediately. For a full year, compare the annual Arcade rate with the sum of those purchases. If you would subscribe for only a few months each year, calculate the actual months rather than treating a monthly subscription as a permanent cost.
4. Account for access after cancellation
If keeping access after ending a subscription is important, treat Arcade’s cancellation rule as decisive: downloaded Arcade games stop being playable after cancellation. For each separately purchased title, read the applicable listing and store terms so you know what that transaction provides.

Count the family members who will genuinely use the service. Up to five family members can share Arcade at no additional cost according to Apple. Do not assign value to unused seats, and do not assume every individually purchased game has the same sharing treatment without checking.

6. Confirm region, device and catalog status at checkout
Prices and availability vary by country or region. A game can leave or enter a catalog, change price, or add device support. Recheck the listing immediately before subscribing or purchasing, especially when your decision depends on one title.

You want one specific game
If one game is the reason you are considering Arcade, first determine whether that title is in the current Arcade catalog and whether it can be bought separately. If it is available only as an individual purchase, a subscription cannot replace that transaction. If it is in Arcade but you expect to play only briefly, compare its displayed purchase price with the number of monthly Arcade payments you would actually make; there is no defensible answer without those title-specific values.
You want a changing list of games over a year
List every Arcade title you expect to try and every separate title you would otherwise buy. Compare the list with the $49.99 U.S. annual figure or the number of $6.99 monthly payments you would make. The subscription becomes more compelling as the number of desired Arcade titles and the months of intended use increase, but a title that leaves the catalog or is not available in your region can change the result.

Your household has several players
For a family group, evaluate the subscription as one household service. Up to six people in total can use the shared subscription under Apple’s stated Family Sharing limit. Compare that household access with the separate purchases each person would actually make, while checking the sharing rules for those purchases rather than assuming they are identical.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using U.S. prices in another region: Apple says pricing and availability vary by country or region. Use the storefront tied to your account.
- Counting the entire catalog as ownership: Arcade grants access while subscribed; it is not a blanket purchase of every game.
- Assuming every Arcade game is sold separately: The cited Apple support pages do not establish that. Check the individual listing.
- Expecting downloaded Arcade games to keep working after cancellation: Apple Support says they cannot be played after cancellation, even when downloaded.
- Applying the no-ads promise to all paid games: Apple’s statement concerns Arcade games. Inspect each separately purchased title.
- Ignoring device differences: The service lists several Apple platforms, but compatibility remains game-specific.
- Buying a controller unnecessarily: Controllers are optional, and support varies. Look for the controller icon on the game page.
- Using a made-up average game price: Individual prices were not established by the cited sources. Add the actual prices for your own list.
- Forgetting promotions and bundles can change: Eligible-device offers and Apple One terms are volatile. Verify current eligibility before including them in your calculation.
A practical recommendation
Choose Apple Arcade when its current catalog contains several games you genuinely want, you value a consistent no-ads-and-no-in-app-purchases experience, or multiple family members will use the shared subscription. The annual U.S. listing is cheaper than twelve monthly payments at the displayed rates, but only if the annual commitment matches your planned use and your local price is comparable.
Choose individual purchases when your list is short, one particular game determines the decision, you want to avoid an ongoing subscription, or continued access after ending Arcade is more important than browsing a catalog. Verify each title’s current price, availability, monetization, device support and store terms. That title-by-title check is the only reliable way to decide whether buying or subscribing costs less for your situation.
