Apple App Store submission means preparing more than a working app build. You also need to meet Apple’s App Review Guidelines, complete App Store Connect information, give reviewers usable access and context, and provide any documentation required for your app or its content. Apple’s review-time figures are goals, not guaranteed turnaround times.
What Apple reviews when you submit
Apple reviews apps and app updates, app bundles, In-App Purchases, In-App Events, App Store metadata, and other submitted content. The App Review Guidelines set the technical, content, and design criteria; Apple’s submission guidance explains preparation and submission through App Store Connect. Treat both as part of release readiness: approval is not only a check that the binary launches.
Prepare the app’s App Store Connect listing
Before sending a new app or update for review, complete the product information and declarations associated with the submission.
Recommended Free Tools
- Prepare the app name, icon, description, screenshots, previews, and keywords.
- Complete the age-rating questionnaire.
- Provide privacy details for the app and the third-party partners whose code is integrated. Apple requires these details to submit new apps and updates.
- Indicate supported accessibility features in App Store Connect where applicable.
- Check that the app’s declared device capabilities accurately reflect what it supports.
Give reviewers enough context to test the submission
Use the App Review information to explain what the app does and how Apple can reach its important features. Apple’s review preparation guidance asks for information that can vary with the app and submission.
#1 Best Overall
For a new app or an update
- For a new app, describe its concept and business model. For an update, explain what changed and where reviewers can find significant new features or content.
- State the app’s purpose and intended audience, the devices and operating-system versions on which it was tested, any external services or platforms needed for core functions, and any regional differences.
For account-based features
Provide current demo credentials for features that require an account. If reviewers need different account types to test different functions, provide access for each. Explain how they can obtain any required authentication codes; do not leave review dependent on an inaccessible phone, email inbox, or employee.
For apps that require hardware
If core functionality depends on hardware, include a video showing the app running on a physical Apple device as it pairs with and interacts with that hardware. Apple specifies a video, not a screen recording.

Check privacy prompts and third-party SDK behavior
When an app requests access to protected resources such as the camera, location, microphone, or health data, its permission purpose strings should explain clearly and completely how that access is used. Apple recommends identifying the feature the access enables and giving a concrete example in a short, complete sentence. A vague benefit statement or simply naming the resource does not explain the use.
Apple makes developers responsible for third-party SDKs and libraries included in their apps as well. Review what those components access, provide a valid and specific purpose string when required, and remove unneeded API references. As Apple puts it in App Review Guideline 5.1.1(ii): “Ensure your purpose strings clearly and completely describe your use of the data.” See Apple’s protected-resource permission guidance.
Rank #3
Attach documentation when the app or its content requires it
Some submissions need evidence beyond the app and listing. Apple gives examples including medical regulatory clearance or supporting studies, cryptocurrency exchange licenses, evidence of a financial institution or lender partnership, gambling or lottery licenses, and permission to use another party’s intellectual property. These are conditional examples, not a universal checklist. Requirements can differ by country or region, so provide documentation relevant to the storefronts where the app will be distributed. Apple’s review information guidance and App Review overview describe these review considerations.
What review timing and status to expect
Apple’s current App Review status guidance says its goal is to review at least 50% of submissions in less than 24 hours and 90% in less than 48 hours. These are goals, not a promised deadline for an individual app. Complex or novel submissions, documentation checks, regulated content, new platform capabilities, and sensitive features can take longer. Complete review information can help make review faster and more predictable. Check the current figures and status in Apple’s App Review status guidance.
Track the submission’s status in App Store Connect. If Apple asks for information, or an issue can be resolved by changing metadata or adjusting a server-side setting, respond to the review message once the fix is in place; a new build is not always required. If the problem is in the build itself, upload and submit a corrected build. Resolve all identified issues before resubmitting. If you disagree with a rejection, Apple provides an option to appeal to the App Review Board through its review process.

Apple’s submission guidance says that, starting in April 2027, apps and games uploaded to App Store Connect must meet new minimum SDK requirements. For iOS and iPadOS apps, the stated requirement is the iOS and iPadOS 27 SDK or later while targeting iOS 15 or later. Apps for tvOS, visionOS, and watchOS must use the corresponding version 27 SDK or later. Because this date is still in the future relative to Apple’s guidance consulted on October 7, 2026, verify Apple’s current submission requirements before an upload near or after April 2027.
