The current AirTag is Apple’s second-generation item tracker, introduced in January 2026. It is a good fit if you already use a compatible iPhone or iPad, want to find belongings through Apple’s Find My network, and have a way to attach the tag to each item. Check the software requirements before buying: Apple lists iOS 26.2.1 or later for iPhone, or iPadOS 26.1 or later for iPad, plus an Apple Account.
How does AirTag work?
AirTag uses Bluetooth to communicate with nearby Apple devices. When it is close to your paired device, you can use the Find My app to locate it. The second-generation model adds a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip for Precision Finding, which can guide you toward a nearby tag with visual, audio, and haptic feedback. It also has NFC for Lost Mode.
If the tag is beyond Bluetooth range of your own device, Apple’s Find My network may help. Nearby Apple devices can detect the tag over Bluetooth and report an approximate location to its owner. That means location updates at a distance depend on other participating Apple devices passing near the item; AirTag is not a GPS tracker with its own cellular connection.

Does AirTag work with Android?
AirTag is designed for Apple’s Find My ecosystem and setup requires a compatible iPhone or iPad and an Apple Account. It is not a general-purpose tracker that an Android phone can pair with and manage as its owner. Apple describes cross-platform unwanted-tracking alerts, but those safety alerts are different from using Android to set up and track your own AirTag.
Does AirTag need an iPhone?
You need a compatible Apple device to set up and manage an AirTag. Apple’s technical specifications list an iPhone running iOS 26.2.1 or later, or an iPad running iPadOS 26.1 or later, and an Apple Account. Because software requirements can change, check Apple’s current requirements for your region before purchasing.

How far away can you track an AirTag?
There is no single fixed maximum tracking distance. Bluetooth supports proximity finding, while the Find My network can provide an approximate location when other Apple devices detect the tag. Performance depends on nearby devices and surroundings, so it is not a guaranteed live location at any distance.
Apple says second-generation Precision Finding works up to 50 percent farther than on the previous generation and that its speaker is 50 percent louder; it also says the tag can be heard from up to twice as far. These are Apple’s manufacturer-reported comparisons, not independently measured results. Apple’s January 2026 announcement describes the improvements.

Apple cautions that splash, water, and dust resistance is not permanent and may decrease with normal wear. The IP67 rating describes controlled laboratory conditions, not a promise that a used tag will remain waterproof.

Does AirTag come with a key ring?
No. The AirTag itself does not have a ring or loop, so you may need a holder or key ring to secure it to keys, a bag strap, or another item without a suitable pocket or built-in holder. Apple says the second-generation model retains the previous form factor and works with existing AirTag accessories. Apple’s January 2026 announcement listed its FineWoven Key Ring at a US launch price of $35; that is a dated launch price, not a verified current retail price.

How much does AirTag cost?
Apple’s January 26, 2026 announcement listed US launch prices of $29 for one AirTag and $99 for a four-pack. These are launch prices, not verified current prices or a guarantee of retailer stock. Check Apple or a retailer for current pricing and availability. Apple also offered free personalized engraving through apple.com and the Apple Store app at launch.

A four-pack can make sense if you already have several belongings to track, but remember that each tag may need an appropriate way to attach it. A CR2032 battery is included, so a replacement cell is not a required add-on when you first buy one.
What should you consider before buying?
- Apple-device compatibility: Confirm that you have an eligible iPhone or iPad, the required operating-system version, and an Apple Account.
- Finding method: Consider whether Bluetooth proximity finding, nearby Precision Finding, and possible Find My network reports suit the items you want to locate.
- Attachment: Check whether the item has a pocket or holder; otherwise, budget for a compatible accessory.
- Battery and exposure: The CR2032 can be replaced, but battery life varies. Do not treat the IP67 rating as permanent protection against water after wear.
- Current price: Apple’s listed prices are January 2026 US launch prices; verify today’s price and availability before purchasing.
Privacy and responsible use
Apple says AirTag does not physically store location data or history, Find My communications are end-to-end encrypted, and devices relaying a location remain anonymous. Apple also describes cross-platform unwanted-tracking alerts and says AirTag is designed exclusively to track objects, not people or pets. These are Apple’s stated design and privacy protections, not an independent security audit. Use the tag for belongings you own or are authorized to track.
