AirPods 5 add active noise cancellation (ANC) without silicone ear tips, but their open fit still lets some outside sound through. They’re worth considering if sealed earbuds feel uncomfortable and you want less background noise—not if you expect AirPods Pro-level isolation or long listening sessions between charges.
What’s new in AirPods 5?
Apple announced AirPods 5 on September 9, 2026, bringing ANC to its tip-free, open-ear design. Apple also lists Transparency, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Siri integration, Live Translation, a new multiport acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ. The earbuds are positioned as the successor to AirPods 4 in Apple’s entry-level lineup, according to RTINGS’ review.
Apple says AirPods 5 reduce up to 50 percent more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. That is Apple’s manufacturer comparison, not an independently established measurement. Independent reviews describe improved suppression of some background noise, but also note the unavoidable limitation of an open fit: without a silicone-tip seal, voices and other environmental sounds can remain audible. A T3 reviewer, for example, could hear train announcements with ANC on.
So the central question is not whether AirPods 5 cancel noise as completely as sealed earbuds. They do not. It is whether a degree of noise reduction is useful enough when you want to keep the open, tip-free feel.

How well does ANC work without ear tips?
ANC uses microphones and signal processing to reduce some incoming sound. In an open-fit earbud, however, sound can still reach the ear around the earbud because the design does not form a passive seal. That matters most in noisy environments and with voices or other sounds that ANC may not remove completely.
Reviews point to better handling of low-level background noise, but results depend partly on how the earbuds sit in your ears. SoundGuys says it bought and tested the earbuds over four days and emphasizes that fit affects ANC as well as comfort and sound. Its assessment is one reviewer’s experience, not a guarantee of what another listener will hear. See its AirPods 5 review.
Consider AirPods 5 if you want some help with background noise while retaining an open fit. If you need stronger isolation for a commute, frequent travel or concentrated listening, sealed earbuds are a better fit for that priority. RTINGS says AirPods Pro 3 provide stronger low-frequency isolation and a more secure sealed fit; that advantage comes with silicone tips, which some listeners prefer to avoid.

Fit and comfort depend on your ears
AirPods 5 keep the one-size, silicone-tip-free shape. That simplicity is appealing if tips bother you, but a fixed shape cannot fit everyone equally well. Reviewers disagree on comfort and security: some found the earbuds comfortable and secure, while others reported discomfort or a fit that became irritating over time.
SoundGuys’ reviewer reported rubbing after about 30 minutes despite initially finding the fit secure. RTINGS notes that the fit may be less stable for some ears, particularly during intense movement. Those reports describe individual experiences; they do not establish how the earbuds will fit you.
For walking or ordinary daily listening, the open design may suit your preferences. For running or other vigorous activity, do not assume they will stay secure just because they feel stable at first. A Tom’s Guide contributor said the earbuds moved less than expected on a 22-mile run but did not feel as secure as some running headphones, and battery life was a limitation. That single run does not prove general suitability for long-distance running. Review the Tom’s Guide assessment alongside your own fit needs.

AirPods 5 versus AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case
Both listed AirPods 5 variants include ANC. The higher-priced version adds wireless charging, a case speaker for Find My and volume controls on the earbud stems. Apple’s technical specifications and RTINGS’ review describe the case differences; Apple’s listed runtimes are estimates, not guaranteed listening times.

Choose the standard version if USB-C charging is enough and you do not need the case’s extra functions. The Wireless Charging Case model is the more capable option if you will use its charging choices, Find My speaker or stem volume control; it also has Apple’s higher battery estimates. Neither version removes the short per-charge runtime caveat.

Battery life is the main practical drawback
With ANC on, Apple estimates up to four hours of playback per charge for the standard model and up to five hours for the Wireless Charging Case model. With noise control off, its estimates rise to up to six and seven hours, respectively. Apple estimates total playback with the cases at up to 20 hours for the standard model and 22 hours for the wireless-case model. Actual results can vary, and reviewers also identify runtime as a weakness.
The distinction between per-charge runtime and case-assisted total runtime matters. The case can recharge the earbuds between listening sessions, but it does not make a single uninterrupted session last as long as the total figure. If you regularly listen for several hours at a stretch, or need earbuds to last through a long workout without a break, this limitation should weigh heavily in your choice.

The choice comes down to fit preference and what you expect ANC to do. AirPods 5 prioritize an open, tip-free fit; AirPods Pro 3 use a sealed fit that RTINGS describes as more secure, with stronger low-frequency isolation and longer continuous battery runtime.

The comparison reflects RTINGS’ assessment, not a guarantee that every listener will find either model comfortable. If you dislike silicone tips, AirPods 5 address that preference more directly. If reliable isolation and a secure seal matter more, the Pro design better matches those needs.
Compatibility and buying considerations
Apple lists Bluetooth 5.3 and says AirPods 5 can work as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, although functionality may be limited. Apple also lists system requirements spanning current operating systems for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, Apple TV and Vision Pro. Check Apple’s specifications for the requirements that apply to your device and software version before buying; feature support may differ outside Apple’s ecosystem.
