Apple says the A20 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro’s redesigned cooling system are built to sustain demanding performance for longer—not merely deliver a brief peak. The claimed improvement is up to 40 percent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro generation. That is distinct from Apple’s separate claim that the A20 Pro GPU is up to 40 percent faster than the A19 Pro; neither figure has been independently verified by long-duration testing in the sources available.
What Apple changed to keep performance going
The A20 Pro is the system-on-a-chip in iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple’s explanation of its sustained-performance claim centers on moving heat away from the silicon, not just on making the chip faster. The package, thermal interface, vapor chamber and heat-spreading structures are intended to work together as one cooling system.
In an October 13, 2026 interview with The Telegraph India, Anush Venkatesan, Apple’s senior director of iPhone product marketing, described the chip and system as a combined effort: “With A20 Pro, we’ve taken huge steps with a brand new architecture, and paired with incredible efficiency across the system.”
The engineering problem is straightforward: computation uses power, and that power produces heat. Dan Murray, Apple’s VP of Silicon Engineering, put it this way: “We can’t avoid the fact that all this compute capability does consume power, and that power, in turn, generates heat, and we need to extract that heat from the silicon.” If heat accumulates, a phone may have to reduce performance to manage its temperature. Apple’s design aims to improve the route heat takes out of the chip so demanding work can continue at higher performance for longer.

How the four parts of the thermal system work together
1. Silicon and memory sit side by side
Apple says its custom chip packaging places the silicon and memory next to each other rather than stacking memory over the SoC. The company says this takes memory out of the chip’s thermal path and lets the silicon connect directly to the vapor chamber. Banafsheh Barabadi, Apple’s senior manager of Thermal Product Design, described the change in the interview: “For the first time, we could actually couple directly to our thermal solution from the silicon, and we designed the entire system around it.”
2. A flexible thermal interface provides the connection
The interview describes a “metal over foam” thermal interface material between the chip and the cooling solution. It is one link in the heat-transfer route from the silicon to the vapor chamber; the interview does not provide a measured temperature reduction or a quantified performance contribution for this material on its own.

3. A larger vapor chamber moves heat through the phone
Apple says the A20 Pro connects directly to a next-generation vapor chamber whose surface area is three times that of the chamber in iPhone 17 Pro. The interview describes the chamber as part of the phone’s central structure. The larger chamber is intended to carry heat away from the chip and spread it through the device rather than leaving it concentrated near the processor.

The final part of the interview’s four-pillar explanation is a display plate using nano-twin copper with graphite to spread heat. Taken together, the package, interface, chamber and plate form a route from the silicon into a larger area of the phone. Apple’s claim is about the behavior of that complete system; the available sources do not quantify how much each component contributes separately.

What Apple’s performance figures measure
The percentages describe different comparisons and should not be treated as interchangeable measures of “speed.” Apple announced the figures on September 9, 2026; they are company claims, not results from an independent test reported in the sources available.
| Claim | Comparison and meaning | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 40% better sustained performance | iPhone 18 Pro versus iPhone 17 Pro. This is Apple’s claim about performance maintained over time, not a peak GPU-speed figure. | Apple Newsroom, September 9, 2026 |
| Up to 40% faster GPU | A20 Pro GPU versus A19 Pro. This is a graphics-performance comparison, not the sustained-performance claim above. | Apple Newsroom, September 9, 2026 |
| 50% more memory bandwidth | A20 Pro versus A19 Pro. | Apple Newsroom, September 9, 2026 |
| Three times the vapor-chamber surface area | iPhone 18 Pro versus iPhone 17 Pro. | Apple Newsroom, September 9, 2026 |
| 32 total Neural Engine cores | Dual 16-core Neural Engine; Apple says it provides twice the AI processing power of A19 Pro. | Apple Newsroom, September 9, 2026 |
A20 Pro specifications Apple has announced
Apple describes A20 Pro as built on a 2-nanometer process. Its listed configuration is a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and Dual 16-core Neural Engine. The CPU and GPU core counts describe the chip’s configuration; they do not, by themselves, establish how long it can sustain a particular workload.

Apple’s bandwidth, graphics and Neural Engine comparisons use A19 Pro as the baseline. The sustained-performance comparison instead names the iPhone 17 Pro generation. Keeping those baselines separate matters: a GPU comparison, a memory-bandwidth figure and performance maintained over time answer different questions.

What sustained performance could mean in use—and what is not established
Longer or demanding tasks such as gaming, video recording and on-device AI inference can keep a phone’s processor active and generate heat. Apple’s design changes are aimed at managing that heat so performance holds up better during extended work. The announcement does not provide separate sustained-performance results for those workloads, nor does it specify the test duration, ambient temperature, power conditions or battery impact behind the up-to-40-percent claim.

The sources available do not include independent benchmarks, thermal measurements or long-run stress tests of iPhone 18 Pro. Apple’s figures therefore describe what the company says its new chip and thermal system can do; they do not establish how the phone will perform in every game, recording session, AI task or environment. Barabadi noted that the work is largely hidden from the user: “What I find most compelling about the work is none of that is visible to the user, and that is exactly the point.”
