Apple’s A20 Pro is the 2-nanometer chip inside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple lists a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and Dual 16-core Neural Engine, while independent reviewers have published strong Geekbench results. Those figures describe specific phones and test runs—not a guaranteed score for every device or a direct measure of sustained gaming performance.

A20 Pro specifications at a glance

Specification A20 Pro
Process technology 2 nm, according to Apple
CPU Six cores
GPU Seven cores
Neural Engine Dual 16-core Neural Engine
Devices iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max

Apple’s announcement is the source for the configuration and the chip’s host devices: Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro announcement. A20 Pro is part of these phones, not a standalone upgrade product.

What Apple claims about A20 Pro performance

Apple compares A20 Pro with A19 Pro, reporting up to 20 percent faster CPU performance and up to 40 percent faster GPU performance. It also says memory bandwidth is 50 percent higher and the Neural Engine delivers double the AI processing power. These are Apple’s published generational claims, not independent measurements; “up to” does not mean every task improves by that amount.

Apple also claims up to 40 percent better sustained performance than the prior generation. That figure is attributed to a combination of custom chip packaging, memory placement and the iPhone 18 Pro’s redesigned vapor chamber. Apple says the packaging places the silicon die beside the memory, removing memory from the chip’s thermal path and allowing direct attachment to the vapor chamber. This is a claim about the phone’s overall thermal design under sustained use, not a chip-only benchmark result.

Independent A20 Pro benchmark scores

Tom’s Guide reported these results from its iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max testing. Scores are the publication’s results for particular devices and runs.

Device Geekbench 6 single-core Geekbench 6 multi-core Geekbench 7 single-core Geekbench 7 multi-core
iPhone 18 Pro 4,735 12,800 4,022 11,543
iPhone 18 Pro Max 4,741 12,789 4,025 11,525

Source: Tom’s Guide’s iPhone 18 Pro testing. Geekbench 6 and Geekbench 7 use different workloads and scoring mechanisms, so compare results only within the same version.

Beebom Gadgets separately reported 4,707 single-core and 12,598 multi-core in Geekbench 6 on an iPhone 18 Pro Max. Its Geekbench 7 results were 4,025 and 11,599. It also recorded 3,424,974 in AnTuTu V11 and 80 percent stability in the 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Stress Test. These are that publisher’s device and test results; they should not be blended with other reviewers’ figures into a universal A20 Pro score. See Beebom Gadgets’ A20 Pro results.

How to interpret the scores

Geekbench 6 and 7 are separate comparisons

A score from Geekbench 6 cannot be compared numerically with a Geekbench 7 score as if both came from the same test. For a useful comparison, match benchmark version and, ideally, the same publisher’s testing method.

CPU scores do not settle GPU or sustained performance

Geekbench’s single-core and multi-core figures indicate CPU performance in that benchmark. They do not by themselves establish graphics performance, gaming frame rates or behavior after a long period under load. Consider GPU tests separately, and treat stress-test stability as specific to the phone, test and conditions reported.

Early database entries deserve caution

MacRumors covered early Geekbench entries but marked them unconfirmed. One-off database submissions cannot establish how a phone behaves during prolonged gaming or another demanding workload. Prefer later reviewer testing for performance comparisons, while treating early entries as preliminary. See MacRumors’ report on early A20 Pro benchmark entries.

A20 Pro vs. A19 Pro: how to compare them

Apple’s stated improvements are maximum generational claims; reviewer scores are measurements from specific phones. Keep those evidence types separate. A fair A20 Pro and A19 Pro comparison should match the benchmark version and testing source, then assess each performance area independently.

  • CPU: Compare single-core with single-core and multi-core with multi-core in the same Geekbench version.
  • GPU: Use a graphics benchmark or game test rather than inferring GPU results from CPU scores.
  • Sustained load: Look for a long-duration test on the complete phone, not just a brief benchmark run.
  • Device context: Name the handset tested; cooling and other phone design choices affect results.

The available reports do not provide a standardized, cross-publisher dataset or controlled long-duration results directly comparable across all devices. A single cross-source “winner” or definitive sustained-performance figure would overstate what these results establish.

What A20 Pro means when choosing a phone

Because A20 Pro is integrated into the iPhone 18 Pro family, a buying decision is about the complete phone rather than a processor sold separately. Apple’s sustained-performance claim specifically involves the chip packaging and iPhone 18 Pro cooling, so real-world long-session performance depends on the system and workload together. Benchmark scores are useful indicators, but they are not a substitute for matching the phone to the tasks you care about.
