The Hatfield Apple-1 sold for $1,148,200 including the buyer’s premium at an October 2026 Bonhams auction, setting a reported record for a commercially sold production Apple-1. Two bidders competed for 28 minutes, taking the lot well beyond its $500,000–$800,000 estimate.
What happened at the auction
The computer, known as the Hatfield Apple-1 after its original owner Fred Hatfield, had reportedly sold for approximately $686,000 in 2013. Its 2026 result was therefore a major increase in headline price, although auction totals from different years are not directly comparable without knowing the hammer price, buyer’s-premium terms, condition and market circumstances.
MacRumors reported the $1,148,200 total as the Bonhams result. The figure includes the buyer’s premium, so it is not the amount paid to the consignor before the auction house’s charges. The premium rate and hammer price were not stated in the available reporting.

Why the Hatfield Apple-1 was worth more than $1 million
Documented connection to Fred Hatfield
Named ownership gives a collectible computer a traceable story rather than leaving it as an anonymous board. In this case, the machine’s identity is tied to Hatfield, whose correspondence with Apple became part of the computer’s history.
Steve Wozniak’s signature
The motherboard was signed by Steve Wozniak. A signature directly on an original Apple-1 board is materially different from a later autograph on a loose accessory because it links the identifying artifact to the machine itself.

A 1978 letter signed by Steve Jobs
The lot also included a 1978 letter signed by Steve Jobs. The letter documents a real exchange between an early Apple customer and the company, adding primary-source provenance to the hardware.

Hatfield had complained that the Apple-1 offered limited software. Jobs responded with an offer to exchange an Apple II motherboard plus $400 for the Apple-1. Hatfield kept the original computer instead. That decision preserved a rare production Apple-1 and created the narrative that now accompanies the lot.

Competitive bidding
Two bidders stayed in the contest for 28 minutes. Auction results can be amplified by the identity of the participants, their willingness to compete for a particular provenance package and the timing of the sale. The bidding behavior explains why this lot exceeded its estimate, but it does not establish a standard market price for every Apple-1.
What the rejected Apple II upgrade means
- Hatfield raised a practical complaint: he told Apple that the Apple-1’s available software was limited.
- Jobs proposed an exchange: an Apple II motherboard and $400 in return for the Apple-1.
- Hatfield declined: he retained the earlier computer rather than accepting the newer platform.
- The evidence survived: the signed 1978 letter records the exchange and was sold with the machine.
The episode is important because it connects the Apple-1’s technical limitations to a contemporary owner’s decision. It should not be read as proof that every Apple-1 owner received the same offer; the reported offer concerns Hatfield’s documented correspondence.

How this result compares with other Apple-1 records
The phrase “record” needs a precise definition. The Hatfield result was described as a record for a commercially sold production Apple-1. The Apple-1 Registry separately lists a $2,750,000 sale for the Celebration Apple-1 in January 2026. Those figures belong to different record categories and should not be treated as a single, uniform price trend.

What can make one Apple-1 sell for more than another
The Apple-1 Registry cautions that auction results are difficult to compare directly. A meaningful comparison should check all of the following:

- Working condition: whether the computer operates, and which technical issues remain.
- Provenance: named previous owners and documentation linking them to the hardware.
- Signatures: whether Steve Jobs or Steve Wozniak signed the board, documents or accessories, and whether the signature is authenticated.
- Production identity: the production batch, serial or registry identity where established.
- Completeness: letters, manuals, cases, power supplies and other original accessories included in the lot.
- Auction terms: the venue, buyer’s-premium structure and whether the published total includes that premium.
- Bidding conditions: the number of serious bidders and how aggressively they competed.
Reports on the Hatfield sale do not establish every one of those technical and completeness details. Its price should therefore be understood as the outcome for this specific provenance package, not a valuation guide for an uninspected Apple-1 board.
What the record does—and does not—prove
The sale demonstrates that a historically documented Apple-1 can attract more than $1 million when hardware, signatures, correspondence and a memorable owner story come together. It does not prove that Apple-1 prices have risen at a uniform rate, that all production units are worth seven figures or that the 2013 and 2026 totals represent identical auction economics.
For historians and prospective consignors, the strongest evidence is the chain connecting the physical board to its owner and documents. For bidders, the critical task is to verify the board’s identity, condition, signatures and included material before comparing it with another auction result.
