A combined API response does not mean every field in it belongs in one update request. Compose reads for the view clients need; design writes around which fields share an owner, permission scope, and change workflow. That separation makes it clearer whether a request changes, clears, or leaves a value alone—and helps prevent one broad endpoint from giving callers authority over unrelated data.

Why a read model should not dictate an update contract

A GET response often assembles information from several concerns so a screen can render in one request. That is useful for clients, but the resulting object is a view, not necessarily a sensible unit of writing. A customer response might combine profile details, an email-verification state, operational status, and tags. Those fields can have different owners, authorization rules, and consequences when changed.

Sending the whole view back as an update blurs those boundaries. A caller may be allowed to edit a display name but not to mark an email as verified or deactivate an account. The API should not grant write access to every field merely because they appear together in a response.

The practical rule is to group writable fields only when they share responsibility, authorization, and workflow. A composed read can still present all of them together.

Make each write intent unambiguous

An update may need to express four different intentions: leave a field alone, set it to a value, clear it, or change one member of a collection. These intentions are easy to confuse when an API relies on a broad request object.

  • Omitted: Is the field unchanged, or should it be removed because the request replaces the resource?
  • Set: A value such as 0, false, or an empty string may be intentional, not equivalent to omission.
  • Clear: An explicit null may mean “remove this value,” but some request models collapse omitted and null properties into the same representation.
  • Change one collection item: Replacing an entire list to add or remove one item can overwrite another caller’s concurrent edit.

Either common null-handling shortcut can lose intent: skipping nulls can make clearing impossible, while treating the request as a replacement can clear properties the caller omitted. Partial-update formats can distinguish some operations, but they cannot reliably infer which fields a user intended to change if the client has already lost that information.

That can happen as form state passes through view models, data-transfer objects, service layers, or generated SDKs. Dirty-field tracking may disappear along the way. Comparing a loaded object with an outgoing one is not always a safe substitute: defaults added during mapping can look like deliberate edits.

Choose a write shape that fits the resource

No single update method fits every resource. Start with the data’s shape and rules: is it a small fixed record or a flexible document? Can the client send every writable field? Do fields share authorization and workflow? Must edits be atomic? Is the collection a set of identifiable items or an ordered value that is replaced as a whole?

Use complete PUT for a small, cohesive resource

PUT is a clear choice when the writable resource is small, its fields belong together, and the client can send every writable field. Treat the request as the complete writable representation: include all fields, using null where the API defines it as a clear operation. If the client has no change to make, it can avoid sending the request or resend the current representation.

For example, a profile resource might allow a caller to update a display name and phone number together. Email could be a separate resource if changing it starts a verification workflow. A verification flag owned by the server should not be client-writable, and operational deactivation is better represented as an explicit operation than as an ordinary profile field.

Complete PUT is a poor fit for a wide aggregate when its fields have different owners, permissions, or workflows. A single request body then obscures which changes are permitted and what they trigger.

Use a patch format for document-like data when it helps

Flexible preference bags with arbitrary keys, or large configuration documents, can be a better match for JSON Merge Patch or JSON Patch. PATCH itself does not prescribe one body format; the format must define what a request means for the resource.

Format How changes are expressed Important trade-off
JSON Merge Patch A partial document describes values to merge, with null used to remove members under the format’s rules. Arrays are replaced as a whole, so it does not naturally express a change to just one array member.
JSON Patch An ordered list of operations describes edits to paths in a document. It is expressive, but array-index paths can target the wrong element after reordering unless the request guards its assumptions, for example with a test operation.

Neither format removes the need for the client to preserve intent. If the client cannot distinguish user edits from untouched values, a patch request can still make unintended changes. Field masks are another published approach to identifying which fields a request changes; organizational API guidelines also document choices for their own client and governance environments. Those conventions need not transfer unchanged to every team.

Give collections and business transitions the right address

Address collection items individually when they have identity

If collection elements have identities, give each one an address so a client can add or remove one item without replacing the entire collection. For example, an API might use POST /customers/123/tags to add a tag and DELETE /customers/123/tags/456 to remove a particular tag. This avoids resending unrelated items and reduces the chance of overwriting another edit.

A collection without natural item identity—such as an ordered list of steps—can remain part of its parent resource and be replaced as a unit when that is the intended behavior.

Name operations that carry business consequences

Use a named operation when a state change has business consequences or when several changes must succeed together. For example, closing an account might need to deactivate the customer and cancel a subscription in one atomic transition. If those actions are split and only one succeeds, the system could leave an inactive customer still being billed.

Representing a transition as a field update does not remove its business logic. It merely makes the operation and its consequences less visible in the API contract.

Account for the costs of a narrower write surface

More calls mean more partial failures to handle

Editing several concerns may require several requests. The client must show which changes succeeded and which failed rather than presenting the screen as if the whole edit were atomic. A batch API can reduce round trips while keeping each operation’s method, URL, body, and result distinct; it should not bypass the rules of the individual endpoints.

Protect related changes with an atomic operation

Separate resource calls can leave an incomplete edit if a later call fails. When multiple changes must succeed together to preserve a business invariant, provide a named operation that owns the combined transition instead of relying on clients to coordinate separate writes.

Detect stale edits with preconditions

For concurrent updates, return an ETag with GET and require clients to send that version in If-Match with PUT. If the resource changed since the client read it, reject the stale write with 412 Precondition Failed. If the API requires a precondition and the client supplies none, 428 Precondition Required can signal that requirement.

Evolve complete request contracts deliberately

Adding a required writable field to a complete PUT contract can break older clients that do not send it. Version a writable resource when its request contract needs a breaking change, while allowing a composed read representation to gain fields independently.

Move from a broad endpoint without preserving a back door

  1. Add the narrower resources or operations alongside the existing broad endpoint, each with explicit ownership, authorization, and workflow rules.
  2. Migrate clients screen by screen. A screen that edits multiple concerns should handle the possibility that one request succeeds while another fails.
  3. Apply the same rules to the old endpoint. Until it is retired or made read-only, it must not let clients bypass the rules enforced by the narrower write surface.
  4. Keep the aggregate useful for reads. Once clients have moved their writes, the aggregate URL can remain available as a composed, read-only representation.
