An AI agent can use a marketplace listing only if it can discover what the service does and invoke it through a clear, usable contract. That changes the requirements for discovery, documentation, identity, and runtime controls—but it does not make the marketplace itself the protocol that runs the service. A marketplace handles discovery and commercial onboarding; an interface such as MCP exposes capabilities to software; and an organizational registry can catalog services and support governance.
What is the difference between an API marketplace and an agent-service marketplace?
An API marketplace is a catalog and commercial channel for APIs and related software products. Listings help buyers evaluate an offering, subscribe, receive credentials or entitlements, and learn how to use the product. An API-based agent may itself be listed there.
“Agent-service marketplace” is not a universally standardized category. Here, it means a marketplace that can offer complete agents as well as components used by agents, such as tools, knowledge sources, guardrails, protocols, and business-logic components. A buyer may search or browse, evaluate and subscribe, then deploy an API-based service or a containerized component.

A human can interpret a product description and work out how to use a service. An agent may need to select capabilities and call them as part of a multi-step task, so the listing and runtime interface must make the service’s capabilities and invocation behavior legible to software.

How do the marketplace, protocol, and registry fit together?
These are related layers, not interchangeable names for the same thing:
- Marketplace: Supports catalog discovery, evaluation, subscriptions, provisioning, credentials, pricing, and entitlements.
- Runtime interface: Lets a client discover and invoke capabilities. MCP, for example, provides a standardized way for compatible clients to discover and interact with services. It describes callable tools and readable or queryable resources; Google Cloud’s overview also describes prompts and toolsets that constrain which tools an agent can access.
- Organizational registry: Records services or agentic components for discovery and governance. In Google Cloud’s Agent Registry model, an endpoint is a target URL—typically a REST API—while an MCP server exposes standardized tools and data resources. A registry entry can represent an agent, MCP server, or endpoint; its stable registry identifier is distinct from the runtime resource URI.
Registering a service does not execute it, and listing or subscribing to it does not by itself provide an agent-facing protocol. A product can be sold through a marketplace, exposed through an MCP server or API, and recorded in an organizational registry at the same time.

What changes when an AI agent is the client?
Agents can reason, plan, take actions, and adapt while completing multi-step tasks. A human-facing listing can leave some implementation details for a developer to infer; a service intended for agent use needs a more explicit capability contract so the client can determine what it can do, what inputs are required, and what to expect in response.
| Comparison point | API marketplace emphasis | Agent-service marketplace emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| What is offered | An API, SaaS product, or API-based agent | A complete agent or components such as tools, data resources, guardrails, protocols, or workflow logic |
| Discovery | Human search and product evaluation | Human evaluation plus machine-usable capability and schema discovery |
| Use contract | Endpoints, request and response formats, authentication, and errors | Discoverable tools or resources, their schemas, invocation behavior, and errors |
| Access | Buyer credentials and API access policy | Agent identity, least-privilege permissions, and control over individual actions |
| Commercial handoff | Subscription, pricing, credentials, and entitlements | Those same commercial controls mapped to provisioned endpoints, tool access, and runtime use |
| Deployment and governance | Provider-hosted or buyer-deployed service, with applicable access controls | Deployment choice plus controls for tool selection, agent authority, screening, and tool chaining |
The agent-facing emphasis does not mean every API needs an MCP wrapper. An API can be usable by an agent through other interfaces; MCP is one documented way to standardize capability discovery and interaction for compatible clients.

What should an agent-ready listing document?
For an API-based AI agent listing, AWS Marketplace seller guidance calls for functional APIs, successful customer scenarios, pricing integration, and usage instructions. Those instructions should cover prerequisites, authentication, endpoints, schemas, tool descriptions, and errors. AWS’s MCP guidance adds capability documentation, examples, authentication, configuration, and troubleshooting.
For a buyer, the practical test is whether an engineer—or an agent client, where supported—can understand the complete call contract without guessing. Check that the documentation identifies:

- Prerequisites and required client configuration.

- Authentication steps and the permissions each operation requires.

Before publishing an agent-facing service, AWS recommends validating discovery, schemas, authentication, error handling, load, and client compatibility. These are marketplace-specific seller requirements and recommendations, so check the current documentation for the applicable listing and deployment type.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow do subscriptions, credentials, and deployment connect?
The commercial transaction and the runtime call are separate steps. In AWS Marketplace’s documented workflow, a subscription can result in API-key or OAuth credentials for a product API or MCP server. Its buyer guide also describes dynamic endpoint provisioning: after subscribing and completing seller account setup, a customer can receive a customer-specific URL, with credentials delivered securely to AWS Secrets Manager. These are AWS-specific workflows, not universal marketplace behavior.

Deployment location also affects how a service is operated and where data is handled. AWS documents vendor-hosted API endpoints, dynamically provisioned customer-specific endpoints, and container deployment in the buyer’s AWS environment. Its container guidance describes customer-environment execution and customizable deployment configuration as benefits. Container deployment changes the operational boundary; it does not, by itself, establish that a service is secure or settle every responsibility for data handling.
For any listing, establish where the service runs, where requests and data go, who operates each component, and how credentials are provisioned and revoked. Do not infer these details from the marketplace category or deployment label alone.
What identity and runtime safeguards should buyers check?
An agent’s access should be tied to an identifiable principal and limited to the work it is authorized to perform. Google Cloud recommends agent identity and least-privilege roles. Its security guidance specifically warns about prompt injection, unsafe tool chaining, and naive error handling when an agent takes action without waiting for approval.
Google Cloud documents authentication and authorization, administrative controls, and Model Armor screening for calls and responses in its MCP environment. Those are controls in Google’s environment, not a guarantee that every marketplace or independent service audits agent actions. Buyers should verify what controls actually apply to the service they plan to use.
- Confirm whether the agent acts autonomously or waits for human approval, and which actions require review.
- Check that its identity has only the roles and permissions needed for the task, with a clear revocation path.
- Inspect how tool calls and responses are logged, screened, and handled after errors.
- Understand whether one tool can trigger another, and what limits constrain that chain.
- Verify that marketplace entitlements and runtime authorization agree; a subscription should not be mistaken for unrestricted permission to act.
For container listings, AWS also documents transport, endpoints and ports, authentication support, and required protocol messages for particular deployment types. Those implementation rules can change, so confirm the current requirements for the chosen product and deployment path.
