Apex, an Israeli enterprise AI security startup, announced in May 2024 that it had emerged from stealth with $7 million in seed funding. Index Ventures and Sequoia Capital co-led the round; Index identified OpenAI CEO Sam Altman as a participating angel investor. The investment was personal, not an OpenAI corporate investment.
What is Apex, and what did it raise?
Founded in 2023 by Matan Derman, CEO, and Tomer Avni, CPO, Apex described itself as a security layer for organizations adopting AI tools and services. Its May 2024 announcement paired its emergence from stealth with a $7 million seed round co-led by Index Ventures and Sequoia Capital. Index Ventures named Sam Altman among the participating angel investors; SecurityWeek also reported his participation, describing it as reported. Index Ventures published its account on May 13, 2024, while SecurityWeek covered the announcement on May 2, 2024.
That distinction matters: the sources describe an angel investment by Altman, not funding by OpenAI itself. Index said Apex intended to use the proceeds for product development, hiring, and go-to-market work.

Apex’s launch-era product description centered on helping companies manage employee use of AI systems. The company and its investors said the platform was designed to:
#1 Best Overall
- If you want to build a better future, you must believe in secrets.
- The great secret of our time is that there are still uncharted frontiers to explore and new inventions to create. In Zero to One, legendary entrepreneur and investor Peter Thiel shows how we can find singular ways to create those new things.
- Give organizations visibility into employee activity across AI models and applications.
- Let companies set policies governing how those tools are used.
- Detect use that violates company or industry security standards.
- Identify AI-related attacks and support investigation and response.
SecurityWeek described the product as a portal for interacting with multiple AI products. Its report listed ChatGPT Enterprise, Google Gemini, Microsoft Bing, Amazon Q, Microsoft and GitHub copilots, and customer-built applications as supported at launch. That is a historical list reported in 2024, not confirmation of Apex’s current integrations.
What the launch coverage does—and does not—establish
The product scope above comes from company and investor descriptions and contemporaneous trade coverage. The available accounts do not provide independent efficacy testing, comparative results, or evidence that Apex prevented all data leaks. They also do not establish that Apex independently certifies compliance. Those stronger claims should not be inferred from descriptions of visibility, policy enforcement, or detection features.
Rank #2
Index Ventures said Apex was already serving several Fortune 500 companies. That is an investor-published customer claim; the available coverage does not independently substantiate it. Index also stated that more than 90% of Fortune 500 companies had employees using ChatGPT for work, but the launch account did not identify the original study or methodology. The figure should therefore be understood as Index’s statement, not a verified measure of current workplace AI adoption.
Is Apex still available?
The launch coverage and Index Ventures’ company profile establish what Apex announced in 2024, but they do not establish its present operational status, sales availability, pricing, current product capabilities, or current integrations. Index’s profile, accessed September 30, 2026, identifies Apex as an AI security platform and lists Derman and Avni as founders/CEOs; that profile alone does not prove the company remains active.
Rank #3
At launch, Derman said Apex aimed to help security and AI teams enable secure AI adoption. That is the company’s stated mission, rather than independent evidence of product performance.
