The Aosu R1 Ultra is a sensible budget video doorbell if you want recordings stored locally and don’t want core features locked behind a monthly plan. In TechRadar’s 2026 review, alerts, live view, two-way talk, detection zones and playback worked without a subscription. Its compromises are practical: monochrome infrared night vision, a built-in battery that must be recharged by removing the doorbell, and specifications that need context rather than being taken as a promise of real-world image quality.

What you get for the price

Aosu sells the R1 Ultra with an aosuBase mini, which stores recordings locally. Aosu describes loop recording of up to 60 days; Best Buy’s listing specifies 8GB of base memory and also describes 60-day loop recording. These are the publishers’ product and listing claims, not a guarantee that every household will retain exactly two months of footage: recording settings and event volume affect how much video is kept.

The strongest value is that local recording is part of the package rather than a cloud plan. TechRadar’s reviewer used the doorbell for about a fortnight without subscribing and reported access to alerts, live view, two-way talk, custom detection zones and full local playback. AosuProtect+ is optional, for cloud backup and additional cloud features. That makes the R1 Ultra a credible subscription-free video doorbell for the functions tested, rather than a device whose basic use depends on recurring fees.

TechRadar gave a UK list price of £139.99 in its 2026 review and noted that discounts vary. Check availability and the price in your region before buying.

How convincing are the camera specifications?

Aosu lists a 5MP camera, 166-degree diagonal field of view, 4:3 image, enhanced WDR and UHD video. TechRadar’s specification table identifies 2560 × 1920 resolution, 6× digital zoom and a 15fps capture rate. Treat the 166-degree figure as diagonal coverage, not a promise that every part of a wide scene will be equally clear or useful.

Resolution and field of view describe different things: resolution is the image’s pixel dimensions, while field of view describes how much of the scene fits in frame. A 4:3 image can show more vertical area than a typical widescreen view, which may help capture a visitor and parcels near the door. But the reviewer cautions against equating headline figures with practical detail. The 6× zoom is digital, so enlarging a crop does not add detail; the image softens as you zoom in. TechRadar also reports UHD and SD options in live view, which can help accommodate different viewing conditions.

aosu 2K Wireless Doorbell Camera with aosuBase, Battery Powered, 2.4G WiFi
  • 166° Wide View with 2K Clarity: The aosu wireless doorbell camera combines a wide 166° field of view with a 4:3 aspect ratio to capture more of your doorstep and the area around it, while showing visitors from head to toe and packages near your door. See it all in clear 2K resolution.
  • Flexible Local & Cloud Storage: This smart doorbell supports both local and cloud storage. A microSD card (up to 128GB, sold separately) slot lets you add your own card and store recordings locally with no subscription required, or choose optional cloud storage for added flexibility.
  • Smart AI Human Detection, Fewer False Alerts: AI-powered person detection helps this doorbell camera distinguish people from other motion, reducing false alerts and unnecessary notifications so you can focus on what matters at your door.
  • 3-in-1 aosuBase Mini: Wi-Fi, Storage & Chime: The aosu video doorbell pairs with the included aosuBase Mini, which helps extend 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi coverage for a more reliable connection, provides a microSD card slot for local storage, and works as an indoor digital chime. Requires a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network; 5 GHz is not supported.
  • Two-Way Talk with Quick Replies & Voice Changer: See, hear, and speak with visitors from anywhere through live two-way talk on your doorbell. When you can’t answer directly, use preset quick replies, or switch on the voice changer for added privacy when speaking with strangers.

Aosu advertises radar, PIR and AI detection. TechRadar’s reviewer found the combination useful for distinguishing approaching or lingering activity from passersby. That is a reviewer’s assessment, not a guarantee of fewer false alerts in every installation. Placement, the approach to your door, surrounding movement and detection settings all affect what the camera flags.

Night vision is the clearest compromise

The R1 Ultra uses infrared night vision, which produces monochrome footage. It has no built-in spotlight and no color night mode, so a person or package in a dark scene will not be illuminated by the doorbell itself. A porch light can brighten the area, but it is separate from the camera and does not change the doorbell’s night-vision capability.

aosu Video Doorbell Camera Wireless, 2K QHD, 170° Wide Angle, 2.4 GHz WiFi
  • 2K HD Full Head-to-Toe View: With a 170° ultra wide angle and 9:16 vertical view, the AOSU doorbell camera provides a complete head-to-toe view of your doorstep. Its clear 2K video helps you stay aware of who’s at your door, and clearly see visitors and packages with improved detail.
  • Smart Human Detection: Advanced Person Detection features in video doorbell help reduce alerts triggered by animals, shadows, or moving objects, so notifications stay focused on actual visitors.
  • Two-Way Audio With Preset Replies & Voice Changer: This door camera supports real-time two-way audio communication with visitors. Pre-set quick replies help you respond when you're busy or away, while a built-in voice changer helps protect your privacy during conversations.
  • Smart Home Integration: Connect the doorbell camera wireless with Alexa or Google Assistant for hands-free control and real-time alerts. Enhance your home security ecosystem with ease.
  • Flexible Local & Cloud Storage: This smart doorbell supports event-based recording to the storage option that fits your needs. Save footage locally with a microSD card (up to 128GB, sold separately) or back up recordings with optional cloud storage. Connect through 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network (No 5G support).

If color footage at night or built-in scene lighting is important, this is a meaningful limitation, not a minor specification footnote. For a covered, already-lit entrance—or one where identifying movement matters more than color—the infrared image may be sufficient.

Battery and installation: plan for recharging

The doorbell can run on its battery or be wired to an 8–24VAC supply, according to TechRadar’s specification table. The reviewer describes the 5,000mAh battery as non-removable: when it needs charging, you must take the doorbell off the wall. That is less convenient than a model with a quick-release battery, particularly if you want the camera operating continuously at the entrance.

Aosu claims up to 180 days of battery life, with duration dependent on usage and settings. TechRadar says the claim assumes up to ten events a day, each lasting 20 seconds. Treat it as a best-case estimate under those stated conditions, not a reliable interval for every home. Busy entrances, frequent live viewing and settings that capture more activity can change runtime.

Wi-Fi, base station and smart-home support

The doorbell itself uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. TechRadar’s specification table says the aosuBase mini can connect to a router on either 2.4GHz or 5GHz. Aosu lists Alexa and Google Assistant support. Check that your home network reaches the mounting position on 2.4GHz; a dual-band base connection does not mean the doorbell itself uses 5GHz.

Who should buy the Aosu R1 Ultra?

It fits buyers who want

  • Local event recording included with the doorbell and no required monthly subscription for the core functions TechRadar tested.
  • A bundled base station, rather than a standalone doorbell that leaves local storage to be purchased separately.
  • Battery or wired installation, with detection controls and two-way talk.

Look elsewhere if you need

  • Color night footage or a built-in spotlight.
  • A battery you can swap or charge without removing the doorbell from the wall.
  • Guaranteed battery intervals or a particular level of usable detail based solely on advertised resolution, field of view or digital zoom.

TechRadar names the Ring Battery Video Doorbell (2nd Gen) as an alternative with color night vision and no hub requirement, but notes a subscription tradeoff. It describes the Eufy Video Doorbell C31 as closer on no-monthly-fee value, with a quick-release battery and a HomeBase recommended to get the most from it. Those are the reviewer’s characterizations, not a current head-to-head test. Compare the exact model generation, local-storage options, plan requirements and current regional prices before choosing.
