AOL’s “walled garden” was never one open network linking every rival messenger. AIM connected with Google’s chat experience in Gmail, while a separate AOL-MSN-Yahoo connection was announced for business customers using Microsoft’s enterprise server. Yahoo and Microsoft later linked their consumer messengers. Hotmail entered the picture through Microsoft’s service ecosystem and Gmail’s email-import feature—not as a documented AIM chat partner.

Could AOL Instant Messenger talk to Gmail?

Yes, in a feature Google announced on December 4, 2007. Gmail users could sign in to an AIM account and chat with their AIM buddies from Gmail, with those contacts appearing in Gmail’s chat list. Google described a rollout that initially covered English-language users of Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2; the announcement did not say every Gmail user received it at once. Google’s announcement framed the feature as part of its support for instant-messaging interoperability.

Google returned to AOL contacts on May 19, 2011, saying users could add them directly in Google services including Gmail, iGoogle, Orkut and Google Talk on Android. It also described importing an existing AIM buddy list. For that experience, Google said users no longer needed an AIM account to connect with AIM contacts. This was a later, distinct expansion of AOL-contact access, not evidence that every Google service or user had the same capability. Google’s 2011 post describes the feature.

Did AOL open AIM to Yahoo Messenger?

Not in the consumer-messenger sense shown by the announcements. In July 2004, AOL, Microsoft and Yahoo announced a plan to connect their public instant-messaging networks through Microsoft Live Communications Server 2005. The intended audience was businesses using the server to manage communications across company boundaries—not consumers using Yahoo Messenger or MSN Messenger to add AIM buddies. Microsoft scheduled the enterprise server for the fourth quarter of 2004; the release announcement records a plan, not proof of how widely or for how long the connection was used. Microsoft’s announcement names AOL, MSN and Yahoo public networks.

The companies described the combined reach as more than 400 million global “customers, partners and vendors” across the AOL/AIM, ICQ, MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger networks. That was a company-announcement estimate of potential reach for the enterprise offering, not an independently audited count of unique people or active users. Microsoft’s release gives the figure and its context.

Which consumer messengers did Microsoft and Yahoo connect?

Microsoft and Yahoo announced a separate consumer agreement in October 2005: users of MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger would be able to exchange messages and see each other’s presence. Microsoft estimated that the combined community would include more than 275 million accounts. That is the companies’ anticipated account count at the time, not a count of unique people. The 2005 announcement describes the pairing.

In July 2006, the companies said a limited public beta of interoperability between Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger would begin. Their estimate for the combined community had risen to approaching 350 million accounts. The beta announcement is the relevant status marker; it should not be recast as AOL joining that consumer network. Microsoft’s beta announcement details the two services involved.

What does “sort of Hotmail” mean?

Hotmail was Microsoft’s email service, not an AIM chat network. Microsoft’s 2005 description associated MSN Messenger with other MSN services, including MSN Hotmail; its 2006 announcement similarly named Windows Live Mail and MSN Hotmail among Microsoft services. That documents a relationship within Microsoft’s product family, not a bridge between Hotmail and AIM. The 2005 release and the 2006 release describe those service relationships.

There is also a literal email connection: in May 2009, Google announced that Gmail could import mail and contacts from providers including Hotmail, Yahoo and AOL. Importing email and address-book entries is not live messaging or presence across instant-messaging networks. Google’s announcement describes the import feature.

Was AOL’s walled garden actually open?

“Open” depends on which feature and which users you mean. Gmail’s AIM integration gave consumers a way to chat with AIM buddies from Google’s mail interface; Google later described ways to add AOL contacts in its services. The three-company AOL-MSN-Yahoo announcement concerned enterprise administration through Microsoft’s server, while Yahoo-Microsoft interoperability was its own consumer pairing. Hotmail’s role in these announcements was through Microsoft’s broader services and email import, not a demonstrated live-chat connection to AIM.

These are historical announcements and feature descriptions, not confirmation of present-day availability. The cited posts establish what the companies announced or said users could do at the time; they do not establish whether the legacy integrations still work now. Gmail itself had been announced as a webmail preview in April 2004, before its AIM chat feature was announced in 2007. Google’s Gmail announcement helps distinguish the email service from the later chat integration.
