Yes: any Google Wifi point can serve as the primary router, provided it connects by Ethernet to your modem or ISP gateway. But not every device called “Google Wifi” or “Nest Wifi” can route: a Nest Wifi point is mesh-only, while Nest Wifi routers can act as routers. The generations also differ in mesh compatibility.

What you need to make a Google Wifi point the router

Google describes each Google Wifi point as a router designed to work with an existing ISP and modem. In a typical setup, connect the modem’s LAN port to the primary Google Wifi point’s WAN port with Ethernet. The primary point then handles the local network and manages any additional mesh points. Google’s setup guidance explains that Google Wifi replaces a traditional router, but does not replace the modem or internet service: Google Wifi setup requirements.

Additional Google Wifi points can join wirelessly or through supported Ethernet wiring. They extend the Google-managed mesh; they do not act as repeaters for a separate third-party router. Google states that “Google Wifi can’t be used as an extender or repeater for your current router.”

Which Google and Nest Wifi devices can route?

The key distinction is between a router device and a point designed only to extend coverage. Google’s compatibility documentation identifies these roles and the supported combinations:

Google Nest Wifi - AC2200 - Mesh WiFi System - Wifi Router - 2200 Sq Ft Coverage - 1 pack
  • Each nest Wi Fi router provides up to 2200 square feet of fast, reliable Wi Fi coverage for your home. [1]
Device Can be the primary router? Mesh role and compatibility
Google Wifi point Yes Can be the primary router or an additional point; supports mesh combinations with Google Wifi and Nest Wifi devices as documented by Google.
Nest Wifi router Yes Can act as a router or point; works with Nest Wifi routers and points and Google Wifi points.
Nest Wifi point No Wireless-only mesh point; it has no Ethernet ports.
Nest Wifi Pro router Yes Can act as a router or point, but meshes only with Nest Wifi Pro routers.

These roles and compatibility limits are from Google’s Wifi device compatibility guidance. In particular, a Nest Wifi point cannot take the place of the router just because it belongs to a Nest Wifi system.

How to connect Google Wifi to a modem or gateway

With a separate modem

  1. Connect the modem to your ISP service and confirm that it provides an internet connection.
  2. Run Ethernet from the modem’s LAN port to the WAN port on the Google Wifi point you want to use as the primary router.
  3. Set up that point as the primary device; add compatible Google Wifi or Nest Wifi devices as downstream mesh points if you need more coverage.

Google’s setup instructions require a modem and internet service, with the primary point connected to the modem by Ethernet.

  • Google Wifi is a scalable, flexible mesh Wifi system that blankets your home in reliable coverage and keeps buffering at bay; 1 Google Wifi point replaces your router and additional points expand your network to keep the connection fast in every room[1]
  • Google Wifi gives you whole home coverage[1]; 1 Pack covers up to 1500 square feet and 3 Pack covers up to 4500 square feet; points work together to create a mesh network for more coverage
  • Intelligently works behind the scenes to make sure your Wifi remains fast, so you can stream with speed[1]
  • Simple setup in a few steps; use the Google Home app to create your network and get online in minutes[2]
  • Parental controls let you manage screen time, restrict certain kinds of adult content, and pause Wifi to specific devices on your mesh network whenever you want

With an ISP gateway that combines modem and router

A gateway can also provide the upstream connection. Because it already has router functions, its configuration may need adjustment so Google Wifi is the primary router. Google recommends turning off the gateway’s built-in Wi-Fi when possible to avoid running overlapping wireless networks. The exact settings depend on the gateway; consult its manufacturer or ISP instructions alongside Google’s modem and router guidance.

Can you wire the other mesh points?

Yes. Google supports Ethernet backhaul between the primary router and downstream points. A switch can be placed after the primary Google Wifi router to connect wired points or provide more LAN ports. The network order matters: the primary router must remain between the modem or gateway and the downstream points.

Do not put the primary router and mesh points together on an upstream switch in a way that leaves the points outside the primary router’s downstream network. Google identifies that arrangement as unsupported. For switches, Google recommends an unmanaged model; if using a managed switch, Google says to disable Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) and allow Bridge Protocol Data Units (BPDUs) to be forwarded when STP is disabled. See Google’s wired-network setup guidance.

When bridge mode works—and when it does not

Bridge mode is for a single Google Wifi or Nest Wifi device, not for a multi-device mesh managed by that device. Google says, “Yes, but bridge mode will only work if you’re using a single Wifi device.” A primary device in bridge mode cannot manage additional mesh points.

Bridge mode also removes features, including priority device, editable DNS and WAN settings, guest Wi-Fi, and some Google Home controls. Google notes that some security protections are reduced because the upstream router handles those functions. If you want Google Wifi to manage a mesh behind an ISP gateway, Google’s guidance is to configure the upstream equipment appropriately rather than put the Google primary device in bridge mode. Details are in Google’s bridge-mode documentation.

How many points should be in a Google Wifi mesh?

Google recommends not including more than five routers or points in a mesh, because adding more might harm Wi-Fi performance. This is Google’s guidance for its system, not a universal limit for other mesh products. The recommendation appears in Google’s mesh setup guidance.
