HDFC Bank says the Reserve Bank of India approved Anup Bagchi as its next Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer for a three-year term beginning October 27, 2026. The bank’s board also appointed him an Additional Director effective October 2. The CEO appointment remains subject to shareholder approval, so October 27 is the scheduled handover date—not confirmation that Bagchi has already taken charge.
What has been approved—and what remains
In a disclosure dated October 1, HDFC Bank said the RBI had approved Bagchi’s appointment and remuneration under Section 35B of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949. Those are separate steps: the bank disclosed RBI approval, while shareholder approval was still outstanding in the cited filing. The announcement does not establish the outcome of the shareholder vote or provide Bagchi’s remuneration amount or a complete set of appointment terms.

Who is Anup Bagchi?
Bagchi has been associated with the ICICI Group since 1992 and has worked across banking, capital markets, wealth management and insurance, according to Business Standard. His senior roles include CEO and MD of ICICI Securities, executive director at ICICI Bank from 2017 to 2023, and MD & CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance from June 2023. Business Standard and Hindustan Times report that he studied at IIT Kanpur and IIM Bangalore.
Business Standard characterized Bagchi as the first outsider to take HDFC Bank’s top executive role. That description is the publication’s characterization, not wording from the bank’s appointment announcement.

Who is he succeeding?
Bagchi is scheduled to succeed Sashidhar Jagdishan, whose current term as HDFC Bank’s MD & CEO ends October 26, 2026. The bank’s board listing continued to show Jagdishan in the role on October 3.
