An antipodal map tool shows the point on Earth directly opposite a place: enter a location or coordinates, then read the antipode’s coordinates and see whether the point falls on land or ocean. You can also calculate it yourself by reversing the latitude’s sign and shifting the longitude by 180 degrees.

What an antipode means

An antipode is the point diametrically opposite another point on Earth, connected to it through the planet’s center. It is a geometric relationship—not a prediction that you would reach a familiar country or city by digging straight down.

Because much of Earth’s surface is ocean, an antipode can be far from land. In the Antipodes Map & Calculator’s Berlin example, the opposite coordinate is in the South Pacific, far from land.

How to use an antipode map tool

  1. Enter a place name, address, postcode, or coordinates, or click a starting point on the map if the tool supports that option.
  2. Check the starting point and its displayed coordinates. A place name can be ambiguous, so confirm the map selected the location you meant.
  3. Read the returned antipode coordinates and inspect the map to see whether the point is on a continent, island, or in the ocean.
  4. Use any available reverse-geocoded description as context, not as a substitute for the coordinates; descriptions depend on the map and place-name data available to the tool.

For example, Antipodes Map describes searching for cities, addresses, postcodes, or coordinates and displaying both places with their coordinates. Antipodes Map & Calculator also describes clicking the map, entering coordinates, dragging a selection, and showing a place description when available. These are provider-described features, not the result of an independent comparison.

Calculate the antipode from coordinates

For signed decimal-degree coordinates, negate the latitude and shift the longitude by 180 degrees, then normalize the longitude to the range used by your map:

  • Latitude: change its sign while keeping its magnitude. North becomes south and south becomes north.
  • Longitude: add 180 degrees. If the result is greater than +180 degrees, subtract 360 degrees to bring it into the −180° to +180° range. If your chosen operation leaves it below −180 degrees, add 360 degrees.

For instance, Berlin at 52.52° N, 13.40° E becomes 52.52° S, 166.60° W. That is the worked example on Antipodes Map & Calculator, which identifies the result as the South Pacific Ocean, far from land.

Why a globe can help

A flat map can make the relationship between two opposite points less intuitive because of how the globe is projected onto a flat surface. NOAA Research’s Science on a Sphere classroom lesson, “Lessons for Teachers No. 1: Map versus Globe,” says: “The objective is to realize that it is easier to find the correct antipode on the globe than on the map.” A globe is a useful aid for understanding the geometry, but it is not required to calculate the coordinates.

What to compare when choosing a tool

Antipode tools do not all describe the same features. Check what a particular page says it supports rather than assuming that every map offers the same inputs or output options.

What to check Why it matters
Accepted inputs Some pages describe searches by place, address, postcode, or coordinates; others also describe clicking or dragging on a map.
Both points shown together Seeing the original location and its antipode at once makes their relationship easier to inspect.
Coordinates displayed Coordinates let you verify the result even when the antipode has no nearby named place.
Land, ocean, or nearby context A location description can help, but may depend on available map and place-name data.
Sharing or printing The A N T I P O D E finder page says a selected pair can be copied and shared and offers a coordinate print option. That is a provider-specific feature, not a guarantee for other tools.
Longitude normalization explained A clear explanation helps you understand how a shifted longitude is represented near the map’s ±180° boundary.

How common is land opposite land?

Land-to-land antipodes are not the default; many opposite points lie in the ocean. GeoFunGames reports that “only about 15% of that land has land on the opposite side of the planet” and that “land-to-land antipodes cover just 4.4% of the whole surface.” These are GeoFunGames’ map-based estimates, accessed in 2026, measured from the outlines used on its map—not settled official statistics or an independently verified global measurement. Treat them as that publisher’s figures rather than universal constants.
