Anti-tracking clothing can sometimes interfere with a specific computer-vision task, but it is not a general shield against AI surveillance. A pattern that disrupts a person detector does not necessarily affect facial recognition, and results from one camera test do not establish protection across other systems. Whether a garment helps depends on the algorithm, camera, conditions, and task being targeted.

What does “anti-tracking clothing” actually target?

Anti-tracking clothing is a broad label for garments and accessories designed to alter what a computer-vision system detects or classifies. The target might be face detection, face recognition, person detection, pose estimation, or another task. These are distinct operations: detecting that a face is present is not the same as identifying whose face it is, and detecting a person is not the same as matching their identity.

Adam Harvey, creator of the CV Dazzle project, puts the distinction plainly: “Face detection and face recognition are completely different algorithms, though they are often conflated by non-technical writers.” CV Dazzle’s original designs targeted face detection, not face recognition, and the project describes itself as a proof of concept. Harvey also argues that designs need to specify the algorithm they are intended to affect. CV Dazzle

That distinction matters when assessing headlines or product claims. Some prominent adversarial-clothing research targets YOLO-family person or object detectors. If a garment changes whether a model detects a pedestrian, that result does not show it prevents facial identity matching.

How do the patterns try to affect a camera?

Designers may use printed or knitted patterns, colors, textile structures, reflective or infrared features, or other wearable elements to change the visual input a model receives. The intended effect is often to reduce a model’s confidence in its usual classification or encourage it to classify an image incorrectly. This is a targeted interaction with a model, not invisibility.

Mozilla’s reporting describes Cap_able’s process as algorithmically generating adversarial patterns and translating them into knitted structures. The designs must also work within practical textile constraints such as yarn, gauge, jacquard knitting, and color. That is the maker’s approach; it does not establish that a finished garment will work against every camera or model. Mozilla Foundation’s report on anti-surveillance fashion

CV Dazzle is a historical example of visual camouflage aimed at a particular face-detection algorithm. HyperFace likewise describes itself as a decoy against a specific face-detection algorithm, not a way to defeat face recognition. The practical lesson is that “confuses AI” is incomplete unless the claim names what system and task it means.

Does anti-surveillance clothing work in real-world tests?

Some reported tests show a garment affecting a particular camera’s alerts. Those results are narrow, and other reported tests found the same kinds of garments did not affect a different computer-vision task.

Reported consumer-camera tests

Kari Paul’s November 2025 Mozilla Foundation report describes a test in which a consumer surveillance camera issued a “human detected” alert during a walk without a Cap_able prototype, but did not issue the alert on a later walk in front of the camera while the prototype was worn. A separate Mozilla product review reports that four Yelo Pomelo products and garments from AntiAI Clothing passed that reviewer’s test with a particular off-the-shelf camera. These are reported tests of specific products and equipment, not independent certification or proof of performance across deployments. Mozilla’s report on Cap_able · Mozilla’s anti-surveillance fashion review

Different systems can produce different results

In the Mozilla review, the tested garments failed a separate human pose-estimation test. The reviewer also reported that Reflectacles eyewear did not stop the camera’s human-detection alert, although it interfered with an iPhone face-recognition login in that reviewer’s test. These outcomes concern different systems and tasks; they do not establish that the eyewear reliably blocks face recognition or that a garment that affects one camera will affect another.

dibdib Airtag Holder for Kids Hidden 2 Pack (Pink, White)
  • [Magnetic Lock Pin - Kids Cannot Remove It Without the Tool]: Unlike standard safety pins that children can open or pull off, our airtag holder for kids uses a magnetic lock mechanism: the pin passes through clothing and locks into the holder - it cannot be released without placing the included magnetic unlocker tool on the U-shaped symbol on the base. The same technology used in retail clothing security tags. Your child simply cannot take it off on their own
  • [No Accidental Pin Release - Your $30 AirTag Stays Secure]: Standard safety pins bend, open, and separate from the case - causing your AirTag to fall off unnoticed. Our magnetic lock pin stays firmly closed until you deliberately unlock it with the tool. Zero accidental releases, zero lost AirTags. The pin is also fully enclosed within the holder when locked, eliminating any risk of the sharp tip being exposed to your child's skin
  • [Completely Hidden Under Clothing - Kids Don't Know It's There]: The pin attaches discreetly inside shirt labels, jacket linings, school uniform seams, or backpack pockets. Your child can't see it, feel it, or remove it. Unlike visible wristbands or bulky keychains that kids notice and pull off, this hidden airtag for kids works silently in the background. Suitable for school, Disney World trips, airports, malls, and anywhere crowds make you anxious
  • [15g Lightweight Silicone - Comfortable for All-Day Wear]: Made from reinforced skin-friendly silicone weighing just 0.53 oz (0.81 oz with AirTag), your child won't even notice it's there. No skin irritation, no allergies, no discomfort - unlike wristbands that chafe or cause rashes with extended wear. Flexible and breathable design works for sensitive skin and special needs children. Compatible with Apple AirTag 1st and 2nd generation (AirTag sold separately)
  • [2-Pack for Kids, Elderly, Pets & Travel]: One pack covers your whole family's safety needs - use one on your child's school uniform and one on their backpack, or track an elderly parent and a pet simultaneously. Works on luggage, strollers, and dog collars for Disney World, theme parks, airports, family vacations, and daily school runs. Includes 2 holders, 4 pins, and 1 magnetic unlocker tool. Note: Not recommended for children under 3 years old. AirTag not included

In July 2026, The Guardian quoted Jennifer Bell, senior lecturer in creative AI, fashion and digital culture at Nottingham School of Art & Design, cautioning that “none of these products are tried and tested, and a lot of these surveillance technologies can deal with a little resistance … [but] even if the designs don’t necessarily work perfectly, fashion is also a visible sign of resistance.” That is an expert’s assessment reported in the article, not a standardized evaluation of every product. What does the broader evidence say about facial recognition?

A 2023 peer-reviewed survey titled “SoK: Anti-Facial Recognition Technology,” as summarized by State of Surveillance in September 2026, found that only 12 of 30 proposals had tested effectiveness against at least one real-world face-recognition system. Seven of the 30 assumed white-box access to the face-recognition pipeline—that is, access to internal details that may not be available to someone facing a deployed system. The 30 proposals were not all garments, and the counts should not be read as a product pass rate. State of Surveillance’s summary of anti-facial-recognition accessories

A newer research example is Long and colleagues’ “Thermally Activated Dual-Modal Adversarial Clothing against AI Surveillance Systems,” published in the CVPR 2026 proceedings. Its abstract describes thermochromic dyes and flexible heating units that activate patterns, reporting activation within 50 seconds and adversarial success above 80% across the paper’s evaluated real-world surveillance environments. Those are results reported for that paper’s experiments, not a consumer-garment guarantee or evidence of success against all camera systems. CVPR 2026 paper abstract and proceedings page

How to evaluate a garment or claim

Before treating a product as protection, check whether its evidence matches the surveillance task and conditions that matter to you. A credible claim should make it possible to distinguish a targeted experiment from broad, dependable protection.

  • Identify the exact task. Does the claim concern face detection, face recognition, person detection, pose estimation, or something else?
  • Look for the named system and test setting. Is the result from a lab model, a particular consumer camera, or a real-world deployment? A result for one named system does not automatically transfer to another.
  • Check the conditions. Distance, lighting, movement, camera type, and viewing angle can affect a visual test. Ask whether those details are reported.
  • Look for independent replication and a test date. A maker’s demonstration and an independent evaluation are different kinds of evidence; performance claims can also become dated as algorithms change.
  • Separate prototype from purchasable item. A research prototype or maker claim is not the same as a consumer product with established availability and tested performance.
  • Consider everyday practicality. Comfort, visibility, price, and availability matter, but none demonstrates technical effectiveness.

There is no established universally best anti-tracking garment. The evidence summarized above is too dependent on particular products, systems, and tests to support that kind of ranking.

What clothing cannot protect you from

A garment aimed at visual recognition addresses only a slice of privacy. It cannot prevent online data collection, and it does not necessarily affect nonvisual identifiers or unrelated surveillance methods. Even within computer vision, a design aimed at one algorithm may not affect another task or a changed version of the system.

Adam Harvey has described technical camouflage as temporary: “Camouflage, in general, should be considered temporary, but especially technical camouflage that targets quickly evolving algorithms.” That is a useful way to think about the limits of an adversarial pattern: its effect, where demonstrated, is tied to the technology and conditions it was designed or tested against. Mozilla Foundation’s report quoting Adam Harvey
