Use your phone’s built-in tools to screen unknown callers, flag suspected spam and, on some models, spot scam-like behavior during a call. The controls are separate: a caller-ID warning is not the same as screening or blocking, and none guarantees that every scam will be caught. Here’s where to find the main settings on iPhone, Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy, plus the availability limits to check.
What these settings do—and what they don’t
Phone protections generally work in one or more of five ways: identify a caller, warn that a call may be spam, screen a call before it rings, silence or filter it, or block it. A tool may use a carrier’s spam label, the fact that a number is unknown, or a feature designed to detect scam-like behavior. Those signals are not interchangeable.
- Unknown caller controls act on numbers that aren’t saved or recognized. They can screen, silence or sort calls, but an unfamiliar legitimate caller may be affected too.
- Spam identification labels calls using caller-ID or carrier information. Depending on the setting, the call may still ring, be silenced or be moved to a separate list.
- Scam detection may look for suspicious behavior during a call, but is limited to eligible devices and locations and can miss scams.
Platform support pages explain how their features work; they do not establish a common independent effectiveness test across iPhone, Pixel and Galaxy. Treat these controls as useful layers, not proof that a call is safe.
iPhone: screen unknown callers and filter carrier-identified spam
On current iPhone software, start at Settings → Apps → Phone. Menu details can vary by iOS version and Phone app view. Apple’s guides describe these controls in its iPhone call controls guide and unknown callers support page.

Choose how to handle unsaved numbers
In the Phone settings, choose whether to allow calls from unknown numbers, ask the caller for a reason, or silence them. With Ask Reason for Calling, the caller is asked for their name and reason before the phone rings. With Silence, the call goes to voicemail. These controls are about unknown callers, not a guarantee that a known number is legitimate.
Separate unknown calls from carrier-labeled spam
Under Settings → Apps → Phone → Call Filtering, Apple documents an Unknown Callers option that moves missed calls and voicemails from unknown numbers into a separate list. The Spam option is different: calls identified as spam or fraud by the carrier are silenced, sent to voicemail and moved to the Spam list. Apple’s wording specifically makes the carrier identification the trigger.
Check caller identification and important exceptions
Open Settings → Apps → Phone → Call Blocking & Identification to review supported caller-identification sources. Apple says caller information can come from Apple Business Connect, supported carriers and supported call-identification apps. Save important numbers in Contacts if you want them recognized as known callers.

Apple says call screening is unavailable while roaming and turns off for 24 hours after a call to emergency services. If an expected call is missing, check the filtered lists and voicemail rather than assuming it was blocked.
Pixel: enable caller ID, Call Screen and eligible Scam Detection separately
Pixel has multiple call protections in Google’s Phone app. Caller ID and spam warnings, automatic Call Screen and Scam Detection during a call are distinct features. Their paths and eligibility are covered in Google’s Pixel spam and scam detection guide, the Phone app Scam Detection help page and the Pixel Call Screen guide.
Review caller ID and spam controls
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap More → Settings → Caller ID and spam.
- Review caller ID and spam protection. Google says this protection is on by default in the documented app flow.
- If available, turn on Filter spam calls to suppress missed-call and voicemail notifications for filtered spam calls. The calls remain in call history.
Google notes that call information may be sent to Google for caller ID and spam protection. Check the setting’s explanation if you want to understand the data handling before enabling it.

Set up automatic Call Screen if your Pixel supports it
In the Phone app, look under More → Settings → Spam and Call Screen or Call Screen → Call Screen; the label and path can vary. Google describes screening options for call types such as spam, possibly faked numbers and first-time callers on supported Pixel generations. Availability depends on country and device. Review the offered protection levels and choose the call types you want screened.

Check whether Scam Detection during calls is available
Scam Detection is a separate feature that can identify suspected scam behavior during a call on eligible Pixel devices. Google lists Pixel 6 and later in the US, and Pixel 9 and later in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, Spain and the UK. Google also lists Pixel 9a and Pixel 10a in the US. An eligible SIM and presence in a supported country are required; these availability details can change.
Google cautions: “Not all scam calls can be detected. Scam Detection is not 100% accurate and scammers constantly change their tactics.” Don’t rely on the feature to validate a caller’s identity or a request for money or account access.

Messages have separate protections
Google also documents spam detection in Google Messages and a Scam Detection feature for supported app notifications in eligible regions and languages. These are not the same as call screening. Google describes notification detection as running in a secure, isolated environment and says message content is not sent to Google unless the user chooses to share it; that is Google’s explanation, not an independent audit. Choose Smart Call’s spam-blocking level
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap More options → Settings → Caller ID and spam protection.
- Choose whether to block all calls identified as spam or scams, or only high-risk scam calls.
Smart Call provides caller ID and spam protection; blocking depends on the selected option. Samsung says carrier or device support can affect availability, and some carriers require a system update.

Use AI Scam Detection only on supported software
Samsung’s guide says AI Scam Detection requires Android 16 with One UI 8.5 or higher. Where available, the feature is on by default. Review it at Phone → More options → Settings → Scam detection. Samsung says alerts can use a tone or vibration, which users can customize; you can then decide whether to answer or block. Do not assume the feature is present on every Galaxy phone.
Keep unknown-caller screening distinct
Samsung separately documents automatic screening for unknown callers in the Phone app. That feature is not Smart Call’s spam identification and is not the newer AI Scam Detection. Check the Phone app settings on your model to see which options are available.
Which settings should you turn on?
Choose settings based on how much interruption you can tolerate and whether you regularly receive legitimate calls from numbers you do not know.

If you need to receive calls from clients, delivery drivers, clinics or other people who may use unsaved numbers, consider screening rather than silencing every unknown caller. Save trusted numbers, review voicemail and filtered-call lists, and use the strongest blocking option only if its missed-call trade-off suits you.
What to do when a call or message seems suspicious
A warning is a reason to pause, not the only test of a caller. Do not provide a one-time passcode, password, payment or remote access because someone on an unexpected call asks for it. End the call and contact the organization using a number or website you already know is official. For a suspicious text, avoid its links and open the organization’s app or website independently.
Because scammers change tactics and identification systems can be wrong, verify an unexpected request through a known official channel even when the caller’s number or name looks familiar.
