An anti-glare LCD screen has a treated or textured surface that diffuses ambient light, making reflections look less sharp and distracting. It does not eliminate reflected light. Anti-glare describes the surface finish, not a different way the LCD forms an image.
How an anti-glare screen works
The screen surface scatters incoming light so that a reflected lamp or window is spread across multiple directions instead of appearing as a crisp reflection. Panasonic describes anti-glare film as having a processed surface that disperses outside light; Sony likewise explains that microscopic surface unevenness diffuses incident light. The result is a less distinct reflection, not the removal of the light itself.
Anti-glare may come from a factory-treated surface, a processed coating, or a separate film. The underlying LCD still forms the image in the usual way; the treatment changes how light interacts with the viewing surface.

Anti-glare versus anti-reflective
The terms describe different approaches, though one display can use both. Anti-glare diffuses reflections at the surface. Anti-reflective treatments use optical layers designed to reduce the portion of light that reflects, allowing more to pass through the cover material instead.

- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
| Treatment | How it handles ambient light | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Anti-glare | Scatters reflected light across a wider area | Reflections tend to look less sharp, but the light is still present |
| Anti-reflective | Uses optical-layer design to reduce reflected light | Less light is reflected; the treatment does not necessarily diffuse reflections in the same way |
| Combined treatment | Uses both approaches | May reduce and diffuse reflections; performance depends on the specific display |
Corning explains this distinction in its surface-treatment overview. Its December 2025 figures of 95% reflection reduction and 80% glare reduction apply to Gorilla Matte Pro under Corning’s product-specific claims; they are not general specifications for anti-glare LCD screens.
What the finish can change about the picture
Scattering can soften distracting reflections, but it can also affect light from the displayed image. Depending on the surface and display construction, the picture may appear less crisp or show haze. That effect is product-dependent: it is not accurate to say that every matte screen looks grainy or loses a fixed amount of clarity. EIZO discusses these visual effects in its technical material on anti-glare treatment.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Anti-glare does not by itself guarantee higher contrast, improved eye comfort, or outdoor readability. What you see also depends on display brightness, ambient light, viewing angle, and the screen’s other layers.

- Reflection handling: whether the screen diffuses reflections, reduces them with an anti-reflective treatment, or combines both.
- Image appearance: the manufacturer’s description of haze, clarity, or other optical effects.
- Construction and fit: whether the finish is compatible with touch use and the display’s cover-glass arrangement.
- Viewing conditions: room lighting, likely reflections, viewing angle, and available screen brightness.
- Evidence behind numbers: whether a performance figure applies to the exact product and states its test conditions.
A matte anti-glare protector or film can be an option for a screen without a suitable factory finish. Choose one sized and specified for the exact monitor or device; an add-on film can affect the picture differently from a factory-treated surface. Panasonic’s October 12, 2020 release, for example, reports 0.5% photopic reflectance for its AGARAF/MUAG8 (G200N) film specification. That is a product-specific figure, not a performance standard for anti-glare screens generally.

What anti-glare does not mean
- It does not make reflections disappear; it makes them less distinct by spreading reflected light.
- It does not necessarily block sunlight or make a screen readable outdoors.
- It does not guarantee freedom from eye strain or a sharper image.
