Anthropic’s Life Sciences Verification Program (LSVP) is a beta for verified life science teams and institutions that need Claude access for biology-related work. Applicants are reviewed for research credentials, security standards and ethical oversight. The program offers annual Standard Use grants for broad team workloads and separately vetted, project-specific High-risk Use grants; neither removes all safeguards.
Who can apply?
Anthropic opened applications on September 17, 2026, for the beta program. Its intended applicants are life science teams and institutions, including academic labs, startups and pharmaceutical companies. Example workflows include drug discovery, research biology, clinical development and manufacturing. Applicants undergo review of their research credentials, security standards and ethical research oversight. Anthropic said it had onboarded “dozens of organizations” through early access, but did not publish an exact enrollment count. Anthropic’s announcement describes the application process and program scope.
What are the grant types?
LSVP has two grant types with different scopes and review requirements. High-risk Use is an additional grant for work that Standard Use does not permit; it is not a general upgrade for every request.
| Grant | Scope | Vetting | Renewal | Models available at launch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Use | Most life science work and broad, daily team workloads | Program application review | Annual | Mythos 5.1, Opus 5 and Sonnet 5 |
| High-risk Use | One specific research project involving work blocked under Standard Use | Additional vetting | Every six months | Opus 5 and Sonnet 5; Mythos High-risk grants were limited to a small set of entities with additional vetting |
These model names and availability describe the September 17, 2026 launch announcement, not a guarantee of current access. Anthropic said future models were intended to be included in Standard Use as they launched. Check the current program terms for the models and grant conditions available when applying.

How does monitoring work?
Organizations state their intended use cases in their applications, and access is tied to those use cases. Anthropic says it monitors for patterns outside the stated scope and may flag activity to organization administrators so they can take action. In LSVP, life-sciences safeguards shift from blocking requests in real time toward offline monitoring of patterns across requests and sessions. Other protections, including cyber classifiers, remain in place; a High-risk Use grant does not disable them.
Anthropic says it retains data associated with flagged LSVP activity for 30 days to support this monitoring. In its September 17, 2026 announcement, the company said: “For LSVP traffic, we are requiring data retention for 30 days to be able to do this monitoring effectively.” Anthropic states that this data is compartmentalized, is not used to train models and cannot be accessed by members of its life sciences research teams.

Where was LSVP available at launch?
The launch announcement described access through the Anthropic first-party console for API use and through Claude for Enterprise and Team plans. LSVP was not then available on individual plans or third-party platforms. In Claude.ai and Claude Code, the default grant initially applied, except for Claude Code using API authentication.

Anthropic said organizations handling protected health information (PHI) should use separate non-BAA organizations without HIPAA coverage. That launch restriction is consequential: the described setup is not a way to use LSVP within a BAA-enabled organization.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish
Anthropic’s announcement describes access rules, review criteria and monitoring controls; it does not report a measured research outcome or an efficacy statistic. “Dozens of organizations” refers to early-access onboarding and is not an exact enrollment total. For applicants, the practical decision is whether the organization and intended work fit the stated grant scope and whether the described monitoring and data-handling terms meet its requirements.
