Claude is available to government organizations through several distinct routes, but availability does not mean every agency has deployed it. Anthropic announced a one-year, $1 offer for eligible organizations in all three U.S. federal branches in August 2025. On September 30, 2026, it said Claude for Government had become generally available to federal and state agencies. The service is described as FedRAMP High authorized; the appropriate route still depends on the agency’s workload, data rules and authorization boundary.

What “across all government arms” means

The phrase refers to access being offered across the three branches of the U.S. federal government—not proof of universal adoption. On August 12, 2025, Anthropic said eligible executive, legislative and judicial organizations could obtain Claude for Enterprise and Claude for Government through a one-year offer priced at $1. That was a time-limited offer, not a statement of current general pricing. Anthropic’s 2025 announcement also described a GSA relationship intended to streamline procurement.

A later product-status announcement broadened the geographic scope: on September 30, 2026, Anthropic said Claude for Government was generally available to federal and state agencies, following a public beta that began in July 2026. Its current product page also identifies state and local governments and qualifying public-sector organizations as potential customers. These are availability descriptions; Anthropic has not published an agency-by-agency count or a government-wide adoption rate. The general-availability announcement is a vendor statement, not an independent adoption audit.

What government teams can use Claude for

Claude for Government is an administered software service. Anthropic describes desktop workflows involving files, skills, plugins and projects, with examples such as drafting memos, reviewing requests for proposals and supporting casework. Claude Code is positioned for software development and modernization work. These are described use cases, not evidence that every agency permits those activities or data types.

Anthropic’s 2025 announcement also reported that Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory had 10,000 scientists and researchers using Claude daily. That figure is the company’s report from 2025, not a current or independently verified government-wide usage measure. Anthropic said the Department of Defense selected Claude through an agreement with its Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office with a $200 million ceiling; the ceiling is not a verified spending total. Both figures come from Anthropic’s announcement.

Which deployment route fits an agency?

Authorization and data handling depend on the specific service and hosting path. Anthropic says Claude for Government is FedRAMP High authorized, but that does not make every Anthropic product or cloud configuration FedRAMP authorized. The company’s government product and procurement guidance distinguishes these routes:

Route What Anthropic says What an agency should check
Claude for Government Dedicated government offering described as FedRAMP High authorized, with administrative, identity, audit and usage controls. Eligibility, approved data types, enabled models and seat tiers, procurement terms, and whether the service’s authorization covers the intended workload.
Claude through AWS Bedrock in AWS GovCloud Anthropic identifies this route for FedRAMP High and DoD IL4/IL5 workloads, and points to it for ITAR-controlled data and IL5 use. Whether the agency operates the required AWS environment and has authorized the specific model and service for the workload.
Claude through Google Vertex AI Assured Workloads Anthropic identifies a FedRAMP High environment; its current government model guidance says Claude for Government inference routes through Vertex AI’s FedRAMP High-authorized environment. Whether Vertex is within the agency’s approved boundary and the selected offering’s data classification and terms fit the work.
Claude Enterprise or direct Anthropic API Anthropic says these are not FedRAMP authorized today. Enterprise may suit government work that does not require FedRAMP authorization. Whether the workload requires a specific federal authorization and whether the product configuration is permitted for its data and contract.

Anthropic’s product page says Claude for Government supports Controlled Unclassified Information and FIPS 199 High Impact data. It separately identifies AWS Bedrock GovCloud for DoD IL4/IL5 use and says Claude for Government and Vertex are not IL5 environments. Those distinctions matter: support for a data category is not blanket permission to enter that data into any product or configuration. Agencies must apply their own authorization and handling rules. Confirm the current service boundary and model availability against Anthropic’s government guidance before selecting a route.

How procurement and pricing differ

The August 2025 $1 offer applied for one year to eligible organizations across the three federal branches; it should not be read as today’s price. Anthropic’s September 2026 announcement describes Claude for Government as using prepaid usage in fixed increments, with no per-seat fee and a hard not-to-exceed cap. Specific pricing is available by contacting sales. The product page also names Carahsoft as a procurement route alongside direct purchase from Anthropic.

Those government terms are separate from Claude Enterprise’s commercial pricing and seat minimum. Cloud-provider routes have their own account, contract and pricing requirements; the cited material does not establish a single price that applies across routes.

Model and seat availability

Anthropic’s Help Center guidance, updated during the week of October 3, 2026, says Lite seats include Sonnet and Haiku models but not Opus; Standard seats include all available models, including Opus. The same guidance says organizations will move to the updated Claude for Government desktop offering by October 4, 2026. That transition date is imminent relative to the guidance’s update, so agencies should verify whether their workspace has completed the move and which models their administrators have enabled. Anthropic’s model-availability guidance is the source for these seat distinctions and timing.

What agencies should establish before use

  • Identify the data classification and workload, then select a service and hosting route whose authorization boundary covers them.
  • Confirm the agency’s own approval, contract terms and data-handling requirements; a vendor’s general availability claim does not substitute for agency authorization.
  • Check current model access and seat configuration with administrators, especially if the workspace is moving to the updated desktop offering.
  • Obtain current procurement and usage pricing for the chosen route rather than relying on the expired one-year $1 offer.
