Anthropic announced on October 7, 2025, that Rahul Patil, formerly Stripe’s chief technology officer, had joined Anthropic as its chief technology officer. Patil’s remit covers product engineering, compute, infrastructure, inference, data science and security. Former Anthropic CTO Sam McCandlish became chief architect, continuing to lead pretraining and taking on additional research-infrastructure responsibilities.
What Anthropic announced
Anthropic’s October 7, 2025 announcement named Rahul Patil as its new CTO and described him as Stripe’s former CTO. The company said Patil brings more than 20 years of experience building and maintaining infrastructure for businesses, along with previous senior engineering leadership roles at AWS, Microsoft and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. Those background details are Anthropic’s characterization.

What Patil will oversee
Anthropic said Patil would lead engineering across six connected areas:
- Product: engineering for the products built around Anthropic’s AI systems.
- Compute: the capacity and systems needed to train and run models.
- Infrastructure: the underlying platforms and operational systems supporting the company.
- Inference: the systems that serve model responses to users and applications.
- Data science: analytical and data-focused engineering work.
- Security: protection of systems, models and customer environments.
The breadth of this list places product engineering alongside the technical foundations required to train, deploy and secure Claude as Anthropic expands its enterprise business.

How responsibilities changed for Sam McCandlish
Sam McCandlish, Anthropic’s co-founder and previous CTO, moved into the chief architect role. Anthropic said he would continue focusing on pretraining while also taking responsibility for research productivity and reinforcement-learning infrastructure.
TechCrunch reported that Anthropic was bringing product engineering closer to its infrastructure and inference teams, and that Patil and McCandlish would report to Anthropic president Daniela Amodei. That reporting arrangement is attributed to TechCrunch’s October 2 coverage.
Why the appointment matters
Patil’s background is concentrated in large-scale business infrastructure, while McCandlish’s revised role keeps him focused on core model research. The announced structure separates day-to-day engineering scale and reliability from the architectural and pretraining work behind Anthropic’s models, while keeping both functions under senior technical leadership.
Daniela Amodei said Anthropic had grown to serve “over 300,000 business customers.” That is a company-stated figure in the October 7 announcement, not an independently audited customer count.
