Anthropic says it will commit $150 million over three years to make Claude available to more than 15 federal agencies participating in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission. The October 8, 2026, announcement describes support for several hundred research projects, but does not give an agency-by-agency allocation, a rollout calendar, or results from the new commitment.

What Anthropic says it will provide

The commitment is intended to support researchers working on Genesis Mission projects, not to create a general consumer offer. Anthropic describes a package that combines AI tools with implementation assistance:

  • Claude and Claude Code: Access for work across several hundred Genesis Mission research projects.
  • API credits: Credits to support project use of Anthropic’s models through its API.
  • Agency and laboratory collaboration: Work with federal agencies and national laboratories to identify and support science priorities.
  • Training, onboarding, and technical support: Assistance intended to help scientists incorporate the tools into their work.

Anthropic names NASA, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation among the agencies involved. The announcement does not say that every participating agency or researcher will receive identical access, nor does it set out eligibility rules.

Which science priorities are involved?

In its October announcement, Anthropic specifically highlights fusion energy and quantum computing. The company’s earlier partnership announcement with the Department of Energy described broader areas of interest: energy, biological and life sciences, and scientific productivity.

That December 18, 2025, partnership also discussed possible AI agents, Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers connected to scientific tools, and Claude Skills for specialized workflows. These were part of the earlier partnership’s description; they should not be read as a detailed specification of what every project in the new three-year commitment will use. Anthropic said the earlier collaboration could affect work across all 17 national laboratories. Anthropic’s December 2025 partnership announcement includes the company’s original description. In that announcement, Chief Science Officer Jared Kaplan said, “The Genesis Mission is the sort of ambitious, rigorous program where that belief gets tested.”

How the $150 million fits with other Genesis Mission figures

Several official announcements describe different contributions at different points in time. Their figures are not interchangeable totals: one is Anthropic’s new three-year commitment, one is a White House list of partner commitments, and one is an earlier DOE figure for consortium partner support.

Announcement and date Figure What it describes
Anthropic, October 8, 2026 $150 million over three years Anthropic’s commitment to support Claude access and related services for Genesis Mission agencies and research projects. Anthropic’s announcement
The White House, October 8, 2026 $150 million each from Anthropic and Google Company commitments listed in a broader fact sheet about the mission. This is not an additional figure to add to Anthropic’s own commitment. White House fact sheet
U.S. Department of Energy, July 22, 2026 More than $800 million Consortium partner support reported by DOE at that earlier date, spanning categories such as compute and credits, AI models, cloud infrastructure, scientific expertise, research partnerships, and direct funding. It is not a revised total for Anthropic’s October announcement. DOE consortium announcement

What is new—and what remains unreported

Anthropic says it announced a DOE and Genesis Mission partnership in December 2025 and has since worked with DOE to bring Claude to scientists across national laboratories. The October 2026 announcement adds a specific $150 million, three-year commitment and describes support reaching more than 15 federal agencies.

Anthropic has not published a breakdown of the commitment by agency, project, or service. It also has not named the several hundred projects, provided a detailed deployment schedule, or reported independently assessed scientific outcomes attributable to this new commitment. The announcement establishes what the company says it plans to provide, not that all support has already been delivered or has produced breakthroughs.
