Annika O’Brien’s giant-robot story is about Robot Combat League, SYFY’s 2013 television competition—not a retail robot or a modern combat-robot event. In the show, O’Brien drove Game Over while teammate Keisha Howard controlled its upper body and arms. Their robot survived three rounds against A.X.E. despite arm damage and leaking hydraulic fluid, but lost the judges’ decision.
What was Robot Combat League?
SYFY’s Robot Combat League paired human teams with large, custom-built fighting robots for televised bouts. Annika O’Brien described the concept in Andrew Terranova’s May 6, 2013, Make: interview as “like WWE wrestling with robots.” The machines were designed and created by Mark Setrakian and his team; they were not off-the-shelf humanoid combat kits.
The show split control between two teammates. O’Brien was the “tech,” who drove the robot, and Keisha Howard was the “jockey,” controlling its upper body and arms. O’Brien recalled of her first time in the chair: “When I first sat down in the chair, I had no clue.” These are statements from the 2013 interview, not recent comments.
How Game Over was built and operated
O’Brien and Howard were assigned Game Over, which the profile described as heavily armored and mobile. The article reported six hydraulic actuators in its abdomen and a 24-inch monitor embedded in its torso. The robots moved through a programmed step cycle, and the interview emphasized that teams had to take great care while the machines were powered on. Those details describe the show’s machines in 2013; they are not current specifications or operating instructions.

- 【Built Tough 】Let’s be honest: kids drop, crash, and throw everything. These robots are made with thick, tough plastic for all the roughhousing. No flimsy tiny parts that snap off on day one. Drop it off the couch, crash it into walls — it keeps on battling.

- 【Rechargeable + Sound Can Turn Off】Skip wasting money on piles of disposable batteries — both robots charge up easy. The battle sound effects are fun for kids, but you can mute them completely whenever you need quiet. Naptime, work calls, or just your own sanity? No problem.

What happened in Game Over’s fight with A.X.E.?
Game Over fought A.X.E. in the competition’s third episode. During the bout, Game Over’s left arm was damaged and began leaking hydraulic fluid. O’Brien, Howard, and the pit crew repaired the right arm between rounds, and the team chose to continue.
The profile says bouts consisted of three two-minute rounds, with 20 minutes between rounds for repairs. Game Over fought all three rounds despite substantial damage, then lost the decision to the judges. O’Brien said she and Howard had considered withdrawing: “It was up to us whether we wanted to go on to another round. Keisha and I almost dropped out.”

Who was Annika O’Brien outside the show?
At the time of the Make: profile, O’Brien worked full time making robots and had founded the LA Robotics Club. The article reported over 1,200 members in 2013, including high school students, hobbyists, and professionals. That is a dated figure from the profile, not a current membership count.
