Anne Hathaway apologised after a video of her directing photographers during a group photo at the Verity premiere spread online. She later said she was trying to help as the crowded photo call became difficult to manage.

What happened at the Verity premiere?

At the New York premiere on September 29, 2026, Hathaway stood with cast members including Dakota Johnson and Ismaël Cruz Córdova for a group photo. As photographers tried to capture the cast, Hathaway began counting and directing where people should look, moving the group’s attention from one side of the photographers to the other. Johnson joked, “And then I’m gonna leave.” [c001] [c003]

A clip of the exchange circulated online and was described as viral, but the cited reports do not establish a verified view count. [c001] [c003]

Why did Anne Hathaway apologise?

On September 30, the night after the premiere, Hathaway discussed the clip on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. When Fallon showed it to her, she covered her eyes and called the footage “the stuff of nightmares.” She explained that the group was large and photographers were becoming frustrated: “There were so many of us and the photographers were getting upset, and the vibe was changing.” [c002]

Hathaway said, “I was trying to be helpful,” then apologised: “I apologize everybody. That girl came out to play last night. Actually, she didn’t come to play. She came for business.” She also described her reaction as “mom mode by way of chorus line.” [c002]

The visible action was Hathaway taking charge of the group photo; her later explanation was that she meant to help as the photographers and cast struggled to coordinate. The cited coverage does not establish a conflict between the actors.
