You can’t use an animated GIF as a supported Microsoft account profile photo: Microsoft says animated GIFs are not supported. For a Windows 11 local account, you can choose a picture in Settings, but Microsoft does not document GIF animation support in that picker either. To keep the GIF’s artwork, use one of its frames as a static picture.
Can you upload an animated GIF as your Windows 11 profile picture?
No. Microsoft Support says animated GIFs are not supported as Microsoft account photos. Uploading one will not create a supported animated avatar, and you should not expect it to animate on the sign-in screen, in Start, or in other account surfaces.
Windows 11 also lets you choose a picture for a local account, but Microsoft’s instructions do not specify GIF file handling or promise that an animated image stays animated. Treat this as a picture change, not a way to enable animation.

Change a local Windows 11 account picture
- Open Settings > Accounts > Your info.
- Under Adjust your photo, select Choose a file, then Browse files to pick an existing picture. Alternatively, select Open camera to take a photo.

Use a still frame from the GIF
If you want the GIF’s artwork in your avatar, export or extract one frame and save it as a static image file, then use that image through the relevant account route above. This preserves a chosen moment from the animation; it does not make the profile picture animate.
For a portrait or landscape image that you want to show in full, Microsoft recommends adding borders to make it square before using it as a Microsoft account photo. Microsoft’s picture guidance covers the format and framing recommendations.
