Choose Animal Crossing: New Horizons if you want to shape an island and move between decorating, collecting, gardening, fishing, and meeting animal residents at your own pace. Choose Stardew Valley if you want farm development to drive your progress, with crops, animals, crafting, town relationships, and cave exploration that can involve dangerous monsters. The better fit depends on the activities you want at the center of play—not on one game being universally better.
How the games differ
Both are cozy life-simulation games, but their central loops are distinct. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is an open-ended island life: Nintendo highlights decorating, gardening, fishing, bug and fossil collecting, and interacting with animal residents. Stardew Valley starts with an inherited farm plot and puts developing that farm at the center, alongside crafting, fishing, relationships, and exploration.
Calling Animal Crossing more sandbox-like and Stardew Valley more progression-oriented is an interpretation of their documented features, not a controlled comparison. In practical terms, the first is a stronger match for choosing among varied island activities; the second gives you a farm project and connected town activities to build around.

What to check before buying Animal Crossing in 2026
Animal Crossing: New Horizons received version 3.0 on January 15, 2026. Nintendo says the update is available to all players and includes support for Switch 2 enhancements. The official update description also names a new resort hotel and Slumber Islands. Check Nintendo’s version 3.0 support FAQ and current store listing before buying: distinguish the Nintendo Switch game from the Switch 2 Edition and confirm which version fits your system.

No. Happy Home Paradise is optional DLC, not a prerequisite for the base game. It adds vacation-home and island-facility design. Nintendo’s support page says it requires the full Animal Crossing: New Horizons game and can be accessed by buying it separately or through an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. If access comes through membership, it ends when that membership ends unless you bought the DLC separately. The support page states a separate-purchase price of $24.99; check the current page for applicable regional pricing and terms. Nintendo’s Happy Home Paradise support page
